I think the fact that Sonic was the focus of the story was the very reason he got more action stages than everyone else. Doesn't it seem a little natural that the main character does more in the game?
I'm more surprised people talking about wanting dark and seriousness like SATAM in a game called Sonic Colors. This game isn't going to be a dark and brooding game, it stars an Amusement Park in space and cute little aliens named Wisps. Another dark and brooding game will likely come later, have these discussions for those times. EDIT: And yes, I think the wisps may give glances into some of the worlds in the game. As I said if that purple evil-looking bat/ghost thing means this game has a surreal haunted level, I am all for it.
That's not entirely true. I think both the Adventure series, and Sonic Unleashed had nice storylines. Shadow The Hedgehog kind of made SA2's storyline a little TOO serious, though. It was okay when Shadow was just Dr. Gerald's top secret project, not some alien creation used to collect Gerald's debt to Black Doom. Also, Unleashed's storyline was pretty awesome, aside from Sonic randomly transforming into a werehog. There was absolutely no reason given for him to transform into that. If Eggman used a machine to strip Super Sonic of the Chaos Emeralds, it should've just left him as normal Sonic. The Dark Gaia energy, or whatever, should've either changed him into maybe a Dark Sonic type character, or not have affected him at all due to his pure heart. Other than those small problems, I think most of the 3D games have pretty good storylines. Not perfect, but good.
I don't think anyone's complaining about it, it just came up as a topic for discussion... (At least, that's why I joined in. :specialed This game can have it's cute story, I doubt anyone truly doesn't want it to. (Do they?) The main problem I have with Unleashed's story by itself is that Chip overshadows Tails, and they're basically the same character, but Chip is signifficant to that one game. I'm just glad they got rid of him when the game ended. I hope this new friend of Sonic's doesn't take away from one key principle: Sonic and Tails are supposed to be the two important characters (And Knuckles when he's there.) and some random thing shouldn't come between them. Mario isn't overspecialized like Sonic is though... Mario's always had the leading role in his games and he's always been a pretty varied character with the exception of Yoshi kind of acting as his element shields, both have proven popular on their own games but both never conflict with the other and are best when in games together because of their relationship in the games. Sonic doesn't work like that. Sonic isn't as varied as Mario is. Think of Mario, wihout his jump moves, without whatever gimmick is for the games (hats, FLUDD, etc) and with only two moves: punching (64, am I right?) and the jump moves (landing, then jumping again, you know the ones if you've ever played a 3D Mario) and with Yoshi in the levels, except getting hit means really losing him instead of the bastard just running off on you. Now stick him in a linear 3D game with one goal. It would get tedious fast and he would be boring.
True. However, this just means they need to give the gameplay more attention. They need to work on how the other characters play. Maybe have the levels in a 10:8 ratio; If Sonic has 10 levels, then the other characters have 7 or 8 levels. Its more balanced. The other characters get more attention. Sonic gets the exclusive "Super" stage, which is the final boss. My reasoning for this, is because in Sonic games of past. Namely SA2, Heroes and Sonic 06, you don't play as Sonic that much AT ALL. Sonic needs to have the longest story because its a Sonic the Hedgehog game. That doesn't mean the other characters cannot be included, they can, just with limitations as to how many levels they each have. And Each character should have completely different levels, unless the story requires it.
Back to the original topic, I hope this game comes out well. I do wish it was on the 360 and PS3, though. I didn't like the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed and this sounds alot like it.. It still looks pretty cool, though.
Trying to keep things a lil' on-topic, I personally would hope that Tails (and perhaps someone else) will also be playable. I am one of those that doesn't like being forced to play as JUST Sonic, too. The franchise offers so many cool and fun characters, use them. ._.
After the teaser showed Sonic and Tails running together, I can't help but wonder what's going to become of the idea of a 'Heroes-like multi play game' that was mentioned a while back. I think it's either this in some in some round-about way, or a yet to be announced 360/PS3 game.
I believe that Laser Sonic has the potential to be more than just a reskin of his boost ability. Since Sonic is practically light in that form, maybe he could pass through glass and crystal walls with no problems at all. Sonic's laser form would probably get canceled out if he hit any non-transparent solid object. If that's true, then that could reward players for not hitting anything in laser form. Of course, the areas where Sonic can use a Cyan alien should be wide and vast to make sure that you have room to see what obstacles are up ahead.
Now that I think of it, what ever happened to Sonic running so fast that he leaves a trail of fire behind him. I'd love to see that in a game. I think it'd look better in a 2D game, though.
Oh dear CHRIST no. =P Though I do now have an amusing mental image of the poor thing having to hark around the drumkit to play that bloody intro to the Werehog's fight music (you know, the one that sounds like they just dropped a drumkit). =P
Truth be told, we have no idea how the laser will work differently to the boost. The press release says: Somehow I hugely doubt that it'll just be the boost.
We don't even really know how the laser works yet either. I think the purple one might let you dissolve into shadows though, it reminds me of a similar power on another game. Maybe the green one turns into a snot bubble... That's what it reminds me of. :v:
A lot of people seem to be asking for/expecting a gameplay style like the Adventure games, and I have to strongly disagree with this. The point of Unleashed was to revolutionize the gameplay and to ditch the old style used for the past nine years that had become stale and ultimately very ineffective by that time. And from the sound of things, Sonic Colors is said to take what Unleashed gave us and build upon it. Sega is finally taking a good idea and expanding upon it, which is what I've personally been waiting for for years now. With that being said, I read Blue Blood's thread at SSMB (the one quoted last page that we are currently discussing), and I must say some of the concepts mentioned are getting me excited. I can't wait to find out what each Wisp does. Being able to blast through a stage as fast as possible and use some of these things to your advantage sounds like a pretty fun time. In Unleashed we got boost, drift, and stomp, and that alone was enough to make the stages fun and interesting, so being able to pull crazy stunts like phase through walls and fly should make them twice as fun, and maybe even twice as hard, later on. I'm also interested in the DS version. Since Sonic Colors is going to be two games like Sonic Unleashed, who knows what it'll be like? A full 3D game would be really cool this time, though I doubt it would happen. If not, it will be interesting to see how they can apply the same concepts to a Rush-style game.
