Go play any copy of Sonic 2, American or otherwise. Play until you reach Wing Fortress. See "Eggman-01" written on the wings. Reconsider your position.

This isn't a remake, or a Lucas retcon. Solid proof, direct from 1992.

I actually think this is the best thing. Presumably, someone mocked him with the name Eggman, and he adopted it. Because really, how can you insult a guy with the name 'Eggman' without looking stupid yourself? It's genius.

It doesn't really matter what it's been in the past, they've basically merged now as both sides have adopted both names in some capacity.

Dr Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. There really is nothing more to say about it, even Sega says it's this =P

Oh, indeed. Both names are relevant, and (in my mind) both are brilliant. It's just the issue of the history that keeps this debate going, I think.

  4. As a kid I had no choice, but as an adult I learned to hate all kinds of regionalization/adaptation/dubbing. In my case, this hate always overpowers nostalgia. For some reason I can't seem to spontaneously call the guy "Eggman" (probably because I haven't had much contact with media where he's called that, since I don't play the newer games much - but I do select the japanese voices if I'm given the option), but the name doesn't bother me at all, and I acknowledge it as his true name.

For me, this Eggman/Robotnik thing is just plain silly.
+ - Dangit Bobby, I finally make a post with no tagfail, abd you trash it. I hate you guys. D:
After all, both names are considered canon, and it's completely up to you how you call him. I really don't see how one name is better than another; both fit him well, and besides, nobody would play a Sonic game just because Eggman is called Robotnik or vice versa.

I'm glad my first Sonic cartoon was Underground and I can't have rose tinted glasses for it. That sums up what I think about the name. I don't care. Besides it's their franchise. They do with it whatever they want. This is as pointless as the fight over green eyes or quill size.

Eggman sounds just as lame as Ivo Robotnik. Like many have pointed out, here and elsewhere, Ivo backwards is Ovi, which means egg and he has the word robot in his name. Not just one silly name pun but two. How can anyone hate one and not the other besides the nostalgia factor is beyond me.

Must be such a pain for him to be innocent with ethical standards lol Still don't know why he dosent just move into one of Eggman's old bases that Sonic has run him out of.

Where is Nega-Tails when you need him?

You guys did realize that out of all the Robotniks, SatAM/classic Archies' Robotnik look more like an egg than the rest of them. Hell, he lives in an Egg-Shaped Dome for Christ sake.

I still don't understand why Eggman didn't make like Megatron and simply say something to these effects:

    Person: You're Dr. Robotnik!
Eggman: I'm no longer Robotnik. Robotnik was a loser.
Person: If you're not Robotnik then who are you?
Eggman: I am a genius! I! AM EGGMAN!

Problem solved through character upgrade. Transformers does it ALL THE TIME.

WAIT, I have a question! If they call the character Robotnik, then what do they call Eggman Nega?

I see now. The name Dr. Robotnik apparently holds the same importance as the Declaration of Independence. Oh, and the Constitution, the document I assume you meant to refer to, IS updated a lot. They're called amendments buddy.

Oh, and guys, I've figured it out: Eggman is his middle name. Ivo Eggman Robotnik.

Even though Eggman is canon, I prefer Dr. Robotnik. I just don't like the sound of "Eggman", I guess it's just a word I don't really care for. *shrugs*

I don't see the fuss anymore, ever since SA2, Robotnik was established as his family name, He was called Dr Robotnik in the earlyer games, so its still accurate. Who cares if he wants to change his first name from 'Ivo' to 'Eggman' If he even did that.

As far as im aware, its just 'Dr Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik', the 'Robotnik' isnt gone, he just dosent use it :/

This is kind of an elaboration on what I said earlier, I prefer Robotnik, but it's not that I want the name Eggman dropped, given how they decided to combine the two of them, it seems as though neither one makes sense for every character to use. I suppose the best way to put it would be that he would be Eggman to his friends and anyone who fears him.

But why do I prefer "Robotnik"? To a certain extent, it seems to describe the character more accurately, but it also has a better pronunciation structure, and by that I mean it has one. "Eggman" is essentially two words mashed together. Unlike a typical compound word, neither "egg" nor "man" gives up its emphasis. This gives it essentially the same vowel structure as a Japanese word. It doesn't flow well in normal conversation, it's like when people call things by the Japanese name, they essentially have to interrupt the their usual rhythm to say it.

I also think it's funny that Tweaker complains about it only being the localized name when everything else on the entire wiki uses the English names for things. Catterkiller, Crab Meat, Buzz Bomber, those names are no different from Robotnik.

He's Robotnik for me! Always has been, always will be. I'll accept Eggman in games, but it just isn't evil genius enough for me. Maybe if I was Japanese it wouldn't sound quite as lame :\

While I'm all for the evilness and nostalgia that are invoked by the mere utterance of the name Robotnik, the name Eggman just rolls off the tongue with so much more ease.

Speaking about pronounce, I still annoyed by the fact that almost no one (English speakers) can say Ivo right.

    It's pronouced Evo/Evou not Aevo/Aevou/Aivo/Aivou.

Really, that way the intention to make it sound like "Evil" just disapears...

  18. This argument is so petty and ridiculous that I question why the hell it'd warrent 19 pages of forum discussion.

He may as well be called Fatass Robuttsex for all I care. The important thing is that he's Sonic's Mad Scientist arch enemy.

(Heck, in the Genesis games his name never factored into anything at all. Theoretically one could play through them all without knowing the bad guy had a name.)

And the rain will kill us all / If we throw ourselves against the wall / But no one else can see / The preservation of the martyr in me
Due to the Localization, retcons, and canon. The only real person who can be called Robotnik with any 100% correctness is Dr. Ivo Robotnik in AoStH, Dr. Robotnik (Dr. Julian Kintobor) in SatAM and possibly depending on who did that unmentionable 3rd animated series.

Beyond that it should not matter what anyone calls him but I typically refer to him by the localization except for Sonic X and that related design in the games. OVA Robotnik still suffers from localization but as it is firmly ingrained in my head I still think of him as Robotnik.

However the best thing I can do to try and avoid this mess is just to specify which version I am talking about...

    For example:

(Genesis) Robotnik/Eggman (I switch back and forth but favor Robotnik 98% of the time)
    AoStH Robotnik
    SatAM Robotnik
OVA Robotnik/Eggman (Same situation as Genesis version since he is designed like the genesis version)
and Eggman (Modern Games and Sonic X)

Not just the visuals AKR, it's the name, too. The fact that he's called Dr. Eggman just ruins the game for me as I feel it is disrespectful to the American Sonic fanbase.
