My favorite is the cut scene depecting Sonic going from the Metropolis Zone expy to the Sky Chase expy from Sonic Pocket Adventure.

I don't know why, but I really like the Dark Side version better. Probably because you're Eggman. I like the Day X cutscene for pretty much the same reason. The SA2B opening is another good one, mostly for the music.

Oh, and the first 3D cutscene in the last episode of Sonic Rush Adventure. Even though I had spoiled it for myself, the reveal was glorious.

SONIC CAR CHASE! It's so ridiculous, I love it.

 

Hard choice but I'm with everyone who is saying Sonic 2 and Sonic CD, I think #1 favorite is going to fall with Sonic 2, it can only be described epic in the manor of just the images and how much of the story those single little buggers tell, like when Tails is getting into the plane and there's a Bluebird right there, you know the bird is like "Hey, he's dead Tails" and Tail's face expression that he's saying "No he's not man, there's still a chance, there is still a chance".

 

Sonic 3 opening. It's kinda like: Welcome to paradise, nope, enter Knuckles, took your emeralds, bitch.

Plus, it ties into Sonic 2, which was the Sonic game I loved and played over and over (and still do) before I got Sonic 3.

 

Can this has count?

If not I'd have to choose between the Sonic CD opening, Unleashed's Opening, and the scene from SA2 where Knuckles loses all of the emerald shards.

 

Thank God someone remembers this. I laugh every time this cutscene plays. Ah, good times. That and 'This ship is losing altituuuooode'.

It's either Unleashed Opening or Unleashed Closing for me. There is a + - definite end to Chip, plus a neat new accessory that I hope becomes a permanent part of his character, though I may be alone in this(Not the Werehog, the bracelet)   . Plus you just have Sonic running along a cliffside with Tails following in the Tornado at dawn. I just... find that deeply enjoyable.

 

Hmm my favorites will have to be both the intro and ending in Sonic CD. I also liked Hidden Palace's cut scene, and Knuckles' cutscene at the end of S3K after getting all the Chaos/Super emeralds. Gives you the great feeling of finishing S3K.

 

I love that so many of you are going for the classic 2D sprite-based cutscenes. It just goes to show that you don't need a gazillion dollars worth of CGI to have powerful imagery that sticks with players, even decades later.

The Sonic CD animations are my favourite Sonic anything ever, but I think of them more as an intro and outro, rather than true cutscenes which, as the name implies, cut into the action.

So, as for true cutscenes, I'd have to pick either the snowboarding from Ice Cap (S3&K), or the entire Death Egg launch sequence from LRZ act "3" through to SSZ.

The best part about the classic cutscenes, as has been said, is that they are often playable. They aren't long enough to drag, have no balls VO, and they put you in the action. I mean, in the whole latter half of S&K, it's non-stop action from killer set-piece moment to killer set-piece moment. We're all a little jaded by now, but I can still remember the "ohshitohshitoshit..." feeling I had when I first played them.

Least favourite? Everything from Sonic Heroes. From Vector's cash eyes to the chicken lips that even Aardman would be ashamed of, watching the cinemas in that game was painful. The irony? First Sonic game to have a "theatre mode" where you could watch the cinemas at will. Spoing!

 

I think it is either this (from 1min 7seconds) or this from SA2. I am not a big fan of Shadow or the modern games in general. However I thought these two cutscenes were very emotional, as was the whole SA2 Maria story. They have ruined Shadow's character now by bringing him back.

EDIT: Also, the Unleashed opening was amazing!

 

I second the Unleashed and CD openings and endings.

It might be ridiculous, but A) the opening with the ring is pretty awesome, B) LOL KNUCKLES, C) Sonic is so cool, that even though he's being chased by an horde of robots he still has his feet up while he gives orders to where to go, D) the rich expressions (something used in every cutscene). The game might suck, but the cuscenes alone are pretty awesome in my opinion.

Even with the games horrid dialogue and animation this scene seemed particularly powerful and cute, the Sonic X adaption fixed both aspects to an extent (the Japanese version anyway) but is lacking without Theme of E-102 playing in the background (by the way, anyone notice how the tune seems to blend perfectly with nearly every action in the cutscene? I almost get the idea it was made with this cutscene in mind).

The majority of Gamma's other cutscenes along with those of Unleashed (one of the first games to have pretty professional dialogue and animation) come close up there too.

 

Hmm favourite cutscenes... Well I'd have to say with everyone else, the Sonic CD opening! But also, the Sonic Jam opening cutscene... I remember the first time I saw it when I got my Saturn, Sonic, in 3D! As a kid that was the best thing ever; even when I see it nowadays I get excited x3
