Lava Reef beats most zones (Hidden palace in Sonic 2 is not counted). I have played it so many times. Now I'm gonna tell you the secret behind this big and variable zone.

Lava Reef, as Fiz said has the Death Egg in the background. It's wrapping, but they made the level so that the foreground will cover the wrap of it, and it seems like you're running in circles until you finally get to the Death Egg location. No other zone in Sonic has a background that works like this.

The second bigest thing about this zone is the lava. Compared to the lava in Sonic 1 (makes me laugh), and Hill Top's lava in Sonic 2 that is so: "not lava".
Lava Reef's lava looks like lava, and it even got 3-d steps in it that makes it look so real! Now the best thing about the lava is when it goes black. I have walked on real lava that's black. It's a so cool effect!

But the most important about the zone is its way of being variable. It never repeats.
I can tell you a few things that only appear once! First of, we got the big door that falls down at the beginning of act 1. Then we got the spiral that ends up into a very big waterfall of lava. Then we got the bridge! The bridge only appears once! And the lava behind it goes in cool 3-d steps. Then we got the 180 degree ramp. It only appears once in act 1, and once in act 2.
And not to forget, everyone remember this: The spike ball that follows Sonic. You know it's rotating around a magnet, and when Sonic gets past it, it starts going down. Have I forgot something? Of course I have. The pump machine. It looks like a mini boss, very close related to the mini boss in Marble Garden. It only appears once in Sonic's path. It appear two times in Knuckles' path, because he can get into Sonic's path... or was it 2 pumps in Knuckles' path, and he never gets into Sonic's? I don't remember.

That's about it. If Sonic Team was about to make zones like that again, maybe Sonic would have a comeback. But I don't think so. Sonic is no longer about the zones, the cool stuff, the loops and slopes, you know. It's only about the characters. They making money out of Amy, Tails, Knuckles, And Sonic. It feels like they went Disney >.<

Lava Reef has always been my favorite zone. Because of the originality, details, and music, it is the best zone, ever.

    Lava Reef owns j00. :P

The main draw to LRZ for me is the music, mainly the Act 1 music. That, along with Ice Cap are some of my favourite Sonic choonz of all time.

Lava Reef is a cool zone. Hell, the entire Sonic 3 & Knuckles cart is a good game. It's hard to pick a favorite zone since it's all good! When is comes down to it, my favorite is Sky Sancutary Zone. I like it because it's just a quick paced level that is very enjoyable. I find that as the level I play the most often if I'm bored

    Heh.

As soon as I load up S3&K in Gens, I almost always press F8 for level select/debug. And if it counted hits on the level select, Lava Reef 3 would definately be in the hundreds by now. It's so damn cool!

But I don't like the actual levels because they're frustrating, especially those stupid flamethrowers. Whenever I play the levels in Lava Reef (not the bosses), I always do one of the following:

    a) use debug and create a load of S monitors so I'm invincible
    b) use the invincibility code (is annoying with bottomless pits though...)
    c) use the keep shields code, and get a shield.

I would say Ice Cap, Hydrocity, Marble Garden and Death Egg are my favorites.

I probably should get back to work on my site someday...
I'd have to say Ice Cap's my favorite, followed by Lava Reef. In excitement and variety, Lava Reef is almost a mirror of Ice Cap. I mean Fire/Ice, yeah...

Ice Cap's backgrounds are cool, but the paths... Little bit hard and boring

  10. Lava Reef zone makes me think of Sonic 2's Hidden palace. The music sounds like Hpz's music in the final and the background looks like Hpz;s background.
Its a peaceful level in almost every aspect.

Lava Reef is the only zone of which I can acquire 999+ rings. Reason is because of so many starposts and at least 4 big rings [I think there's 5 in all]. And that's only in the 1st act.

Lava Reef has got to be one of the greatest Sonic levels ever. And to make things even better, all of it's cool effects and objects are amplified by the fact that it comes right after Sandopolis Act 2, one of the most hated levels ever (at least, by me). Even the music is awesome, which reminds me, have any of you checked out the OverClocked remix of LRZ? It's gotta be one of the best instrumental songs ever.

Yeah, Lava Reef is a very cool level. Myself, for some reason, I always favored Doomsday over Lava Reef, but I couldn't tell you why...At any rate, the level layout rules, the music is probably the best in the game, and that says a lot, and there are enough little touches that you notice something new everytime you play. BTW, Knux13, I haven't heard the remix of Lava Reef from OCR, but another good one is the one by LeeBro. Sadly, I believe it's no longer available from his site...

    Nothing worth mentioning
Lava Reef is definitely one of the best levels ever designed in Sonic 2D gaming. The music fits the level perfectly for a lava zone, and is most definitely one of catchiest ones to boot. The scrolling backround even shows that the level was thought of clearly when they made the design. It is probably the most damn-ass longest level ever greated for playing and exploring, which is a very thing. They pulled every stunt they could just to make it the best level in the game. The spitting of the spike balls, the bouncers and running abilities on the ceiling, the turbines which shoot you upward, and the flamethrowers which last a period of time. And as LOst mentioned, I think, the lava does look real enough to me. Plus, when you do the boss battle, it is one the most awesome boss battles as well. The fact that you fall, and land on a platform, and then the Death Egg flashes, turning the whole place into a burning inferno. Nice effects! Even with the racing from the missiles. Though that bug, when you fall down and hit a ring at the beginning of act 3, aka boss, still puzzles me as to why they didn't catch that. Oh well, it's a cool glitch nonetheless.

Yes, LRZ is one of the better Sonic leves in the history. IMO is the most complete zone of all 2d Sonic games and the Sonic Team put much effort in this level.

And LRZ is the unique leven with 4 parts, and their are LR1, LR2, the boss, al HPZ (IMO, HPZ is the last part of LRZ, and for this reason is very short).

IMO, when Sonic Team make S3&K, want make a new HPZ and make it as a really great and unvailable zone, the better zone of all, and LRZ is the incarnation of HPZ (IMO), for this reason probably the most worked zone of S3&K and one of the better.
