That's what I feel about all the other characters, badniks included. We must refrain from adding stuff that's too noticeable, or else...

    =(

To sum up my point, one thing's adding detail that wasn't there because of technical limitations, and another thing's adding stuff that obviously was never intended to be there.

I think establishing this difference should be mandatory when remaking the graphics.

Death Egg didn't LOOK as blatantly ripped as Hill Top Zone was. And even then I wouldn't bother a fix.

my point was that as technical limitations have been relesed sonic has always had a simple design. at the core sonic is still a cartoon character even though he has been dumped in realistic environments. but it doesnt change the fact that he has always had a clean design

I'm not saying that he should have unnecessary details added. All I'm saying is that the details that are there already should be shown in a cartoon manner. Concerning how he looks at the moment in S2HD, outlines might not work as well, but with simpler shading and highlights, they might work better. Then features that are there already can be made a bit more apparent (Put it this way; the eyebrow on the side facing the viewer seems a bit too flat for one with the current highlights on him...). So long as those outlines aren't too thick anyway.

There's only one way of finding out, and that's trying this stuff out and posting these ideas.

And don't worry; as soon as I get a graphics tablet, I'm gonna have a go at it myself.

Didn't know where to post this info, but anyways:

From tomorrow until Aug 9th I'll be (finally) on vacation.
Internet access hours will be pretty limited by 56k, so anything urgent let me know trough PMS :)

P.s. Yeah, I'll be drawing from here too, don't worry guys! ^^

That changes totally the concept, from a "blue hedgehog" to "a blue hedgehog with a piercings and red eyes" ...my badnik however changes from "a red robot monkey" to a "red robot monkey with screws" ...screws ARE part of robots... that doesnt change anything to me, you know xD

The two words are completely interchangeable by their standard meanings, but you seem to interpret them differently. So instead of continuing this argument just so you can make up more bullshit as to why I'm wrong, I'll just block you and be done with it.

"High Definition" and "High Resolution" are supposed to mean the same thing. In reality, "HD" is often applied to things that have horrible picture quality, like most HDTVs. If you don't get what I mean, try connecting a VGA or DVI input source to an HDTV and set it to the native resolution. You'll notice that the TV will overscan the input source, even though VGA and DVI are not supposed to be overscanned. (Most video cards have an option to underscan, which makes the whole desktop visible, but this eliminates all the advantages of "full" 1080p.) That, and most HDTVs recommend using lower resolutions than the TV supports. For instance, I checked the manual of a friend's "1080p" DLP TV, and it said that PC input should use "1024x768".

"High Resolution" monitors, on the other hand, typically don't overscan or mangle the input sources. They also don't have built-in tuners or composite video input, and cost more. I personally think it's worth it to get a monitor like this and use a separate tuner, since then you don't have to deal with improper overscan issues.

That's because the original upscaled art wasn't intended to be drawn with outlined. Of course it will look cheap, it's tacked on.

Okay, the whole debate on the high-resolution/high-definition thing is getting ridiculous. As it refers to this project, it's the remastered, high quality art pieces that are made for high resolution displays. That's all. Arguing the diction beyond this point is pretty laughable guys. Give it a rest.

DistroyA, I can definitely see the merit in what you're proposing, but it's just not the art style that Sonic was meant to work with. I would like to thank you for taking the time to order your comments in a way that can actually be used as good feedback though. There have been reservations by quite a few that S2HD could end up looking like a flash title (we're doing our best to make certain this is not the case), and having outlines around the characters really won't help matters. It's not a bad art style by any means, but it's just not the one for this project.

The restrictions may not have been time, but storage space. However, I don't know how much data one of those carts can hold, so...

That's the thing; it wouldn't look like a flash title with how I see it in my head.

@everyone: Please, don't just thank me and then disregard the advice I've given. Fuck's sake, I've said it numerous times; try out ideas instead of just saying "I doubt this will work" and then just trying it on the current artwork already established. Of course the outlines won't suit the current look of Sonic in this project, as it's a different style that people are trying it out on (Thankfully, people are trying it out at the very least...).

This whole attitude of saying "Thank you for your time blah blah blah" and then completely ignoring sound advice and/or trying out things in the wrong manner is the best way to piss people off. Look at how Jay and others have reacted to the project after numerous times of trying to communicate ideas, only to have them brushed aside. I'm starting to understand why people are having less faith in the project and not actually giving a shit about it. But here's the thing; I'm a persistent mother fucker. I don't give up as easily. ;)

Expect more from me, be it advice in text or image format.

  15. I still say you should kidnap an animation studio and draw this motherfucker like a cartoon.

Being noted everyone's suggestions when propely exposed, aknowledge every user has personal ways of "interpretations" of S2HD, (even on Sonic Style!!) but most of these Great Artists's extreme ideas are never being visually worked out at all by the original users.
Now by a logic perspective, how could we afford to waste years of endless art retakes to base development on ANY DIFFERENT ADVICE we receive to make each user happy? We would need to make dozen of S2HD?

Only trought the Alpha release you'll be fully able to enjoy the environment and understand the art choices that makes us SURE of the success of S2HD current style.
Then, you'll have your space as all the rest of the web, to express your joy/disapprovement on an Alpha complete version.

So, If anyone expects some major retakes to be considered at this point, words are not enough.

  18. If anyone does want to change Hill Top Zone so it doesn't look like a rip-off, think of this, Hill Top Zone has new tiles Loops, Zoom Tubes, and even magma that EHZ doesn't have. It also has a brand-new background and trees, as well as a different pallete so it doesn't lok as similar. Also, new baddies, objects and such make it completely different from EHZ. In fact, when I first played it, I didn't even recognize any the similarities, because the only thing left is the foreground, which doesn't stand out as much.

Plus, you also have to think about this, they are both on the exact same island. I would think it would have a similar landscape at some parts. Also, with DEZ, every single tile was custom made. You can hardly even tell it shares with CPZ.

About custom interpretations, I think they could be released as "add-ons" or something. I mean, if LOst can design the engine to be flexible enough, with an \art directory or something like that, the artists can release alternate versions of their badniks and stuff. Of course one might want to put a limit to this to prevent people from making crappy S2HD fangames and clones, but an "art devkit" for the official contributors of the project is something you should consider.

Seeing as I have a PPC Mac, that statement has been made redundant. Besides, I've seen videos of the alpha release. I wasn't overly impressed. Looked like the original to me.
