This guy seems to think it was only removed on Easy, so let's go with that.

 

Got through it after one prior attempt. I was more annoyed by the Mushroom Hill upwards-moving-cork-things, which I figured out a few days after trying it.

 

Tbh that isn't even the first time the you have trouble with the barrel. By the time your that far into the stage you should've had to have figured out the mechanism already.

 

Except that I've so far only found one other barrel of this kind, and it's one that can be easily confused with a dead-end or a Tails-only path (as there are some of those around in the game), so I wouldn't be surprised if most of us had already found it but completely ignored it as its challenge is completely optional.

I'm much more annoyed by those that could get past it quickly and now insist in that everybody else is a retard because the solution was so easy. Now, if it was as easy as they claim, then why so many people got stuck there? :| Easy? Yes, but as obvious? Doubt so.

 

I've refrained from that because I actually don't remember how, when or where I found out how to "beat" the barrel. I just like mocking the people who're whining and crying about how they were stuck for x number of months, fifteen years later =P

 

Pity it wasn't actually directly mentioned in the manual. It'd have made a decent DOS-style "anti-copy-protection" mechanism.
(I mean that it would work much like how a lot of DOS adventure games had bits that required using parts of the game manual for information in order to complete the game.)


Makes a good conversation piece with people who played it but couldn't topple it, though.

Incidentally I always found MGZ's boss at Tails even harder, since you could do this by well-timed jumping if you tried hard enough. About 85% of the time I'd game over, which is why I almost never played the damn stage, usually going Ice Cap to Mushroom Hill in fun replays at the time.

 

That barrel is fucking legendary! I remember back in elementary school when schoolmates PAID me to come over to their houses and get through that goddamned barrel! I felt like a savior.

 

Wow. I give a little insult and everyone puts a gun to my head. Okay, I'll just pull my post from the forums so that you'll feel better. Sorry to insult everyone. I just assumed it was well known that you use the D-Pad to activate the barrel. Sorry...

Well, I'm sorry I offended you. Insulting everyone was not my best move to get in. I'm probably screwed now. I might not ever get into the forums now. I probably don't belong. I just kinda expect everyone to know what I know. If I don't get in this forum, can I at least have a link to another one? I don't have anyone to talk to about Sonic except for everyone here.

But if I do want to let me in, I promise to behave and not insult anyone or break the rules in any way. I just want someone to talk to about Sonic since my friends don't even know who he is.

 

Hell, this game came out 7-8 months before I was born. =P (And S&K 5 days after)

I got bored when I was 10 and printed and read an entire walkthrough for Sonic 3. I'm dead, effing serious. That's how I knew. I practically imagined what the game would look like since I only played Angel Island before that. Yet I still had trouble with it 2 years later because I didn't know that I had to push up as it's going down, and down as it's going up, I thought you just had to push up and down constantly. XD

 

No, you got it the other way, you have to push down while it's going down and up while it's going up. Otherwise you'll be stopping the barrel instead :P

 

Incidentally, I opened up SSF, and, for the curious, in both the "normal" and "easy" difficulties the game does NOT include that specific barrel obstacle. The other one like that in the act is supplemented with an antigrav platform to make it easier, so you can get through that bit just with well-timed jumping.

Actually, I think you can do that even in the original mode, since you don't need to get UNDER the barrel, just like with the special ICZ platforms (which also respond to UP/DOWN, of course). Since jumping is vector addition, if you're already heading up quickly, jumping will make you move up even faster.

I was talking with a pal on MSN the other day and I linked him that Cybershell video, because of the funny satire with the barrel. I wasen't prepared however for his responce of "omg u press up and down?" and he's pretty much the same age as me. He was under the impresion it was a design glitch and you coulden't get past it without bouncing with the water shield. We were both dumbfounded for different reasons at that moment in time XD
