I guess that's a very nice bit about the Sat/PC verision. You can easily tell where all the wandering flickies are in the pause screen.

I forgot about that feature... Now that I recall it though, I remember how useful a feature it is; it kind of reminds me of the ability that Ecco had in Ecco the Dolphin where if you projected your sonar wave at a wall it would bounce off it and go back to you, and then you would get an almost completely blacked map which would a have spotlight on where you are and the surrounding area. But the Sonic 3D pause screen map (while less "challenging" and "strategic" and whatnot) is much better.

Btw, speaking of "Sat/PC" version, why exactly do the Saturn and PC versions have different Special Stages from each other? I honestly didn't know that they myself until I recently saw a YouTube video of the Saturn version's SS.

The green on(e) is a fat male I think. A friend swiped a cardboard S3D display for me and I looked at it all the time.

The greatness of this game is overhelming, and a dramatic transition period into what we call next-gen Sonic.

The special stage differences were done presumably mainly to cut down on load times -- the PC special stage is just a long, long tube with some textures mapped to it, and not a lot of other special things. No polys, certainly.

I'm pretty sure that the tube itself was made out of polys (albeit easy to make on the fly ones) =P

But I think it was more to make it run fast on slow hardware. Remember, the Saturn version of Sonic 3D didn't have Windows running behind it and also had more direct access to the hardware.

Well, right. I figured "texture mapping" made that kinda clear. One doesn't really "map" a "texture" to a 2D figure.

It's likely a combination of the two, although most Sega games that went onto PC in the mid-90s via SegaSoft did often include 3D acceleration.

I like how the PC version Special Stage is basically just an easy, more 3D version of Sonic 2's Special Stage (basically, anyway -- certainly the S2 one has much better layouts.)

Billboards, e.g. particle effects (like smoke or fire) and sprites. Because the sprites in that special stage are actually textured polygons.

Most computers back then didn't have 3D acceleration though (3D hardware was separate from the base video hardware), and software rendering was quite slow too.

Don't like the MegaDrive version much but the Saturn game's alright.

But I can't stand the Sonic model they used. It's like the mirror opposite of the bad-ass Sonic 1-3 stuff.

Red Volcano? You must be thinking of Sonic Blast.

I've played both PC and (emulated) MegaDrive versions. I don't remember so much from the PC version (because I was 5-6 years old child when I have it), but I've downloaded a demo PC version of it to remind some and also downloaded a ROM for Gens for comparison. I like the graphics better from the PC, but somehow difficulty is the same to me at least while playing the first act.

Writing my own MD/Genesis sound driver :D
I don't know if I'm supposed to post here or if this is just an archive, but oh well.

I like Sonic 3D Blast. I have both the Genesis and Saturn versions, as well as Sonic Mega Collection (where I first saw it). Both soundtracks are good, but the Saturn's effects (creaking bridges in Green Grove, rain and fog in Rusty Ruin, etc.) and special stages give it +2. But then it loses that +2 for having to reload the level whenever you die. The Genesis version has the same problem, but the load is instant. Forget about the Saturn version; it makes me scream, drop the controller, etc.

I got used to using a D-pad, and can now play just fine. The farthest I ever got without cheating was Volcano Valley on the Saturn version.

Spring Stadium was a mistake; they made the third level unnecessarily hard. I suggest moving it to someplace after, say, Volcano Valley.

I hate the Green Flicky, and the Red Flicky is just annoying to get.

Once I was playing the Genesis version. I stomped my feet on the floor in anger at something other than the game, and I wound up executing the error handler, which is level select. Yay!

Maybe later I'll put the Genesis and Saturn Rusty Ruin Zone themes together.

    This topic doesn't even have 24hs o_O

If the Sound Test order is to be believed, Spring Stadium was originally meant to be after Volcano Valley (and before Diamond Dust). Though I wouldn't be so sure.

And Volcano Valley's boss is horribly hard anyways =P Spring Stadium isn't really hard in my opinion.

I don't really find Spring Stadium hard either -- though certainly a few parts a tad bit trying, what with all the bumbers. Sure, it's not as easy as Green Groves, but it's not hard (at least not for me,) just annoying.

The only redeeming thing about Sonic 3D is the soundtrack. The rest of the game is pure unadulterated garbage. Marble Madness is a better Sonic game than Sonic 3D.

It's actually a rather good game, very underrated. Played the hell out of it the Christmas I got it (PC version, on that note), and loved every minute of it. It wasn't until I got online that I started to notice the whole "baw Sonic 3D sux" mentality - not for illegitimate reasons, of course, but very few of said reasons ever bothered me...

...although having a version which actually can save your game helped considerably, I guess. I'm surprised the Saturn version doesn't.

Er, even the bumpers parts are easy if you know how they will react (where will Sonic get bumped against).

    Same here.

See, I never really knew anyone back then who put Sonic 3D down. Me and my friends used to gather around the TV and play zone after zone all into the night. This game is so fun that I started the Genesis verision up and playing through.

I don't know, I like both original and next gen.

It's not bad, but it's not quite a Sonic game.
    ..
And it's not quite a Flicky game, either.
It's this weird half-half mismash that doesn't quite feel right, especially with the isometric controls.

If they'd just done 2D Sonic + Flicky, think how much better that game would've ended up.

    Shame..
    But nice, none the less.

No, I never really liked this game. Too often I found myself missing one flicky, and tediously searching for it, round and round in circles. Plus the controls felt a bit awkward. It's been a while since I've played it though.

I don't hate 3D games or isometric levels. I just didn't seem to enjoy this as much as other sonic games. Still, its not all that bad. I might just play it again out of curiosity.
