What happened to Eggman being his nickname, and Robotnik being his real name? Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, kinda like Tails? It's just what I've always gone by :P

Well, in that outside of that moment, one in the English variety of Sonic Adventure 1, and any mentions of Gerald/Maria, the term 'Eggman' is used with no mention of Robotnik whatsoever, you could easily say the Japanese have won.

But really, my poster was really to counter those who act like Eggman has been foisted upon them after all these years, and that they're somehow being purists by rejecting it. I don't see anyone denying that the name Robotnik was used in SA2.

It's clear that Eggman is simply a nickname, but I wonder how he adopted it. Considering that egg references were already present in the early games (Death Egg, Eggrobos, Scrambled Egg, Crystal Egg, Sleeping Egg, Electric Egg), he adopted the Eggman surname pretty early. I do wonder though if it started as an insult by Sonic on his body shape early on that he decided to wear with pride, or if it was a (not-so-great) secret identity of sorts he took on when he decided to become a super-villain. None of this is canon or could be, but it's nice to wonder.

He probably thinks that if he manages to eventally defeat Sonic, it'd be embrassing to be defeated by someone you've mocked.

    really, this is robotnik.

But yeah, I prefer Robotnik. Eggman sounds more like a reference to Humpty Dumpty. Robotnik sounded menacing. A name has to strike fear in the enemy before they even see you. With an evil name, the opponent gets a frightening image of the enemy, before they've even seen them. The imagination can be much worse than reality.

However, I've got used to Eggman, and it's not all that bad is it.

I always call him Robotnik, it's what I grew up with and I'm not about to change it.
However in some game manuals like Sonic adventure and Advance 2. They say his real name is Robotnik (this can also be evidenced by gerald Robotnik, that they were still using the surname in the later games) And his nickname is Eggman.

But I prefer Robotnik cos' it's from the classic games more aswell as AoStH.

Eggman has always been the nickname of Robotnik, at least for the West.

Anyway, above all, I prefer Robotnik.

Robotnik's his real name, and Eggman is to him as Knucklehead is to Knuckles, like an insulting nickname. It was extremely overused though. Though I grew up with Robuttnik, I got used to Eggman, and its even easier to say (and type!), but to any NEW fans of the series, I'd recommend STARTING with Robotnik, seeing as its his real and rightful name, then decide which one to call him. It just seems more "right" that way. I even taught my 5 year old niece that his name is Robotnik. Plus, Robotnik just sounds more like a menacing, maniacal, evil scientist.

From my own experience, I'm not even sure that most Westerners realize that the name isn't Robotnik anymore. I mean, when you talk about things that used to be cool in the 90s people say Sonic and Robotnik, even some of the kids born after the name change.

Nothing pisses me off more than reading the manual of a Sonic compilation and seeing that they've retroactively switched "Robotnik" with "Eggman".

Dr. Robotnik is much better. We've been calling him Dr. Robotnik since Sonic's first adventure. I didn't like the fact that in the new games, he is called "Dr. Eggman". The name is horrible for any villain, and plus my nickname doesn't fit Dr. "Eggman", only Dr. Robotnik. (It's Dr. Robuttnik, not really original, but funny as hell, well at least to me and my cousin.)

Again, I reference Tweaker's point on how he wasn't meant to be taken seriously, and with Eggman being a non-serious name (plus the fact that the Japanese who made him have always called him Dr. Eggman), Eggman suits him perfectly. Though for some of his more evil moments I supposed that "Dr. Robotnik" was a great choice for a name.

Great job, America, you mananged to do something right for a change!

So just because it's the Japanese name for him means that we should go with it?

If there's one reason I didn't like the Sonic games after S3&K, it's the name "Eggman" (the second reason would be that the characters get voice actors).

Actually, calling him "Robotnik" and making Sonic more successful in America than Japan was Sega of America laying down the law. It wasn't until Sega of Japan started restraining them and their brilliant marketing, refusing to listen to their ideas, changing the name and using more Japanese resources for games that Sega really started to go downhill.

The manual for Sonic Unleashed actually calls him Dr. Robotnik. = / (In brackets, but still) - perhaps both names are "valid" - Sonic Adventure called him Robotnik and established Eggman as a nickname.

You shouldn't like Sonic 2 either then, as people seem to always ignore.

  19. I like how Sonic uses it in SA1..as a Joke.

"I am Dr. Robotnick, the most scientific genius in the world!"

    "Whatever you say, Eggman!"

Thats how it should be. Sonic should use it only because its a funny nickname HE gave him.

It should have never been considered his real name. Robotnick sounds more threatening anyway.

Except Eggman was always the character's name, and the only time it wasn't was when it was localized in the US. You look at the original concept art, the little references in the level art, and the Japanese manuals, and you will see the character referred to as Eggman.

This reminds me of the localization that FUNimation did when dubbing Dragonball Z—they took it upon themselves to liberally change character names because they arbitrarily determined it to be "unsuitable for the target audience." The exact same case applies here—SEGA of America thought "Dr. Robotnik" was someone more appropriate. Whether it fits better or not is a whole different story, but the fact of the matter is that the real name of the character is Dr. Eggman. Plain and simple.
