  1. There were pics of the alpha/ Proof of concept/ whatever version of Sonic 1 for MD posted at Lost Levels awhile back - weve seen the one on the right before [Green Hill] but I've never seen that early title screen.

    http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?t=1668

One thing I've noticed - the title screen is near identical to the 8-bit version. The title screen was revised for the 16-bit before release, to the one with parallax scrolling we all know.

Not a discovery as such but interesting all the same. Not the first time weve seen an 8-bit game have the intro of the Prototype 16-bit one [Sonic 2 anyone?]

Is there any evidence to support the idea both versions being produced in parallel? [I know the 8-bit was released 4 months after the 16-bit, was that because it started development after the 16-bit release, or some other delay?]

They both appear to be mock-ups. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

A mockup isn't a fake, it's an arrangement of pre-existing artwork. Chances are that title screen really looked that way. But it doesn't surprise me. Things usually start out less detailed, and they add more detail as something gets closer to completion.

What about art used in sonic drift and sonic drift 2?

Well... the background in Labyrinth was also darker in both the prototype and the SMS version.

  6. Noticed as well that Sonic 1 SMS/ GG has Sonic *Sort of* in a band during the credits, sort of how the original Sound Test was going to be.

    Tenuous I know...

I've always had a completely out there, in-no-way-provable suspicion that Bridge Zone originally was going to be Marble Zone.

Pardon the small pic, it's the only one I could find on google. Now, compare to a picture of marble zone...

The mountains look similar, and both feature big chunks of clouds. Most damning is that bridge zone features the same kind of trees near the horizon as found in Marble Zone. I've made image edits before where I've changed the blue in the palette to purple, and changed the colors in the water to shades of purple/red, and the water totally could cut it as lava.

The water in bridge Zone works just like lava, too.

Like I said, it's out there and I cannot prove it, but I've wondered since I first got Sonic 1 with my game gear if it was originally supposed to be marble zone.

EDIT: oh yeah, and Bridge Zone features the spikey badniks, which would have been in the original marble zone. And bridge zone has weights used for bouncing to higher places which resemble the weights found in the inside of marble zone.

I know of a Sonic 1 MS proto that's more similar to Sonic 1 MD than the final...

On the subject of 8-bit sonic... is the order of the zones in Sonic 2 SMS/GG as they appear in the game the same order that they're stored in? Because, honestly, it always seemed to me like Green Hills Zone was supposed to be the first level.

The intro kinda segues into it, it's by far the easiest level in the game, and it's a hilly sea-side level - the very icon of an opening sonic level.

I think it's actually in the first slot.

I think it would make sense if it was swapped with Underground Zone. Green Hill to Sky High seems to fit, as does Underground to Gimmick Mountain.

I HATE Underground Zone....mostly because of the boss. I couldn't beat it on my friend's GG in two years. It was seriously more frustrating to me than Sandolipolis Act 2.

Back to that title screen, I think that was a real shot of a real video - there's clear motion blur of sonic's hand moving back and forth between the two positions like it does in the final. I highly doubt they'd put the time in to fake a two-frame animation blur.
