Here is another attempt at MZ. Cleaned it up a bit.

I fixed the bass guitar a bit so it's more audible and changed the background rhythm part to synth as well as other parts. Added reverb at the guitar intro. I think overall it sounds much nicer but the synth still needs a little tweaking and the drums are still just a MIDI to wav conversion but I at least busted open the MIDI file into indivdual drum instruments and will be working on that soon. It's still the guitar work from the last effort simply because the synth effects cover the blemishes of it much better now and it's still being actively fixed up. (I will redo it sometime though) I also realized there was a MIDI channel I had completely ignored that's supposed to back up the guitar part that makes the song sound much fuller and complete.

Sounds a whole lot better IMHO and I can't wait to sink my teeth into the percussion since that's what's really lacking now.

Well, I took a stab at some songs. I hope that they're good enough for your guy's standards. Anyhoo here the are, in no particular order:

Vs. Mode Results Screen
I really thin this one sounds alot like the original version, however, it's not all that quiet, unlike the
rest of my remade songs. I love how the flute and saw wave just kind of blend and make that Sonic 2 sound.

Continue Jingle
Sounds exactly like the original.

Chaos Emerald Jingle
Almost like the original. Just the Yamaha chip produces different sounds than what my synth can offer.
Still good though.

Boss Theme
I was surprised no-one attempted this yet! Anyhow, It sounds close to the original,
but I took some creative liscense with the instrument choice and the cymbols.

I have to be off to bed now >_<...

As far as the jingles go, they're pretty good and definitely have that remastered feel, good job!

The boss theme is also off to a great start, but I feel it's missing something, in the original, on the 3rd playing of the 21 note main melody, a second instrument comes in and follows the melody, making it stronger (00:22 mark on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUDp-DkScts) and your version doesn't do it until the 4th iteration.

So the original has 3 iterations with the single instrument melody, then 2 with the duet, then it loops, and yours does 3 solo, 1 duet and then loops. If you could fix this, then I think you would have a very good remaster of the boss theme.

I think I'll fix my Boss theme up and look into trying the drowning jingle.

 

I have experimented with tabla, sitar and shehnai. I can't seem to find good shehnai samples though.

EDIT: Forgot to mention what song it was. It's Oil Ocean Zone. Also, there is no Shehnai in the song, because I didn't have good samples.

That indeed sounds very cool for the most part, but some guitar parts (specifically, the fast repeating four tones and the very last riff) are also being played by synths here, making the guitar less "important" than it should.

By the way, and since there's been other attempts at recreating the guitar, could you please make a version without it?

Witch_Chao, I don't really like your renders—the production is, frankly, horrible, and they sound way too MIDI-ish. I don't think they're right for the project at all.

This sounds pretty cool! It's got lots of personality, but it's also a bit conflicted with the bass and sort of lacking polish. I like it, though.

 

Has anyone heard the OverClock remix of the Wing Fortress theme? I think its brilliant, not sure if we could consider that for our re-make. Is there someone I could mail it to for consideration?

Ha ha good job im more of a dog man then eh? I still think this particular one is the nuts though. To be honest im not that keen on the current contender for this stage, seems to be missing that epic/sinister feeling that the original has but maybe that's just me being picky because its my one of my favourite game themes.

 

Here is my rendition of Sky Chase zone. I went for a more laid back, orchestrated sound to it because that is what I picture when I see the zone. Feel free to give constructive criticism, and please don't tell me it is good just to make me feel good.

Also note that I am using FL Studio 7, but I have not yet got the full version, and I have noticed it sounds a bit tinny, so the quality will be better when and if I do get it.

Anyway, I like most of what you've done with this. But the percussion needs a lot of work; the hi hats are far too loud, and kind of repetitive. Your drum samples seem a bit weird and unsuited, and distorted a bit.
The high pitched tinkly sound is alright, but it should be a little quieter.

Other than those problems, this is very good.
