the red flashing switch state is leftover in the final game too! additionally, speaking of weird puzzle mechanics, there was that Green Hill Zone hidden door in the prototype that required you to step on a specific grass tile too.

The final game also has of course pushing blocks in Marble Zone to traverse the lava, so it has some pushing mechanics left that could have been remnants of a larger puzzle strategy. Unfortunately that is all conjecture on my part :words: The TCRF article for the prototype states "This build reveals a game that was originally tuned more for traditional platforming and exploration rather than for speed, which would eventually become the hallmark of the Sonic series." which seems pretty opinionated to me, so I might go through the forum thread we inevitably had discussing this prototype and see if there are any details that can make one come to that conclusion (outside of incomplete, choppy zone layouts).

On the Sega Genesis subreddit someone posted a 1992-era Display Tails Statue (looking like what you'd expect an early tails statue to look like) that they're seemingly trying to sell off / get rid of.

It's got some wear but I think it's still looks pretty good*.

*pretty good meaning better than what some of these statues end up like.

    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
Jeez that Sonic looks like a badly-typed LLM prompt result.

We've had this documented for years, but we didn't have screenshots until a few minutes ago, and it wasn't something I was personally aware of.

If you kill yourself a bunch of times in Sonic 2's 2P mode, such that you trigger a Game Over as well as a Time Over when the timer hits 9:59, the player who sucks will start Act 2 with 0 lives. Die again and you can overflow the life counter integer, and you'll end up with "y5" lives, aka 255.

Though lives make no difference to the 2P score tally, so for this trick to be useful, you'd have to be incredibly bad at the game, but also knowledgeable about its inner workings. It's something you might find accidentally if you're dicking around with friends or siblings though.

There are other situations in classic Sonic where you can spoof the life counter, but this is the "easiest" to pull off. Or at least it is when you can fast forward in an emulator.

I thought the easiest was drowning and jumping on spikes at the same time, given that can be done in singleplayer and all.

That at least proves that Superstars was not a flop like people were saying.

I still can't believe people were saying it didn't even hit 1 million units when all the information we had before this proved otherwise.

It's the time frame too. It's almost on par with Superstars in under a year. SXSG is a quick-and-easy port that SEGA/Sonic Team developed entirely in-house (unlike Colours Ultimate) lumped together with relatively small new game. The two games in the package are the best recieved 3D Sonic games ever, and Sonic Generations in particular wasn't sullied by a bad port job like Colours was.

I don't this Shadow Generations is that amazing, but SEGA can only be happy with the reception and I'm really pleased with with the trajectory that the series is currently on too. Here's hoping the eventual Frontiers successor in 2026/27 takes the best of both games.
