Y'know, I'm sort of inclined to disagree, but I genuinely can't remember the last time I've read a message of yours that sounded so tonally happy; "I think it would!" is something I really needed to see today lmao. /gen + pos

Were the 'motion comic' thing to happen, I'd hope it'd be properly adaptational with a decent casting, and not the very particular social media stuff they've been leasing out to other 'Tubers; less Comics Explained / Game Apologist summaries, and more like official comic dubs.
If they did go the 'explain-y' route, maybe they could do something along the lines of the SxShadow introductory thing, or whatever is posted on Marvel social media, giving us a detailed-enough backstory of an arc or character's whole shtick with fresh animation or art - the nitty-gritty though, you'll have to read for yourself. Though, now I'm wondering if this veers too closely into Tails Tube territory... Either way, it might be a solution to inticing people to read the comics without covering every single thing happening.

And yeah, that's sorta what I was getting at, but that I hope ain't the case - the perfect living strawman in fandom is using a disdain of another medium as a front for one's internal disdain for supplementary material, whether it be for inane discourse about the artists surrounding it or the degrees of separation it has from OG media. I dunno, I just find there's always something deeper.

I don't think motion comic adaptations would cannibalise IDW at all, so long as they're smart about it. Take anime and manga - the anime adapts the manga and follows its lead, so with the comics coming up to issue 100 now, they could absolutely adapt some earlier stuff from the comic's first two arcs and it'd be fine. People will either want to continue reading to see where the story goes after that, or else pick up the material that was adapted for its own sake, since they're different mediums.

Anyway, I think Devin more or less hit the nail on the head that this kind of thing, as it exists now, is pretty much only a problem if you want it to be. There are about 80 issues of the comic and it comes out once a month, sometimes with some one-shots or minis thrown in too. It's by no means arduous to keep up with so I just don't see it as a logistical issue. If you don't want to read it, then fine, more power to you, but potentially feeling left out by innocuous references is the consequence you get to deal with.

I don't think that's really a concern when they're already putting the older issues up for free.

I think the best middle ground would be a sort of narrated abridging of the events. There's plenty in each saga you can skip over, but nicely-produced motion graphics with the game cast acting out the dialogue, and maybe even an original score, that'd be cool. Hell, if they really wanted to, they could use it as a chance to revise things they either disliked or had retconned by that point. I'm sure Ian is as tired of hearing about "cowards run, I win" as anyone.

For the record, I don't think that was where Blue Blood was going. I don't know any of his specific opinions on IDW, but I trust him to say what he means, and I think I understand his position. Sonic is a video game series, and the major story beats of that video game series, even if it has canonical supplementary material, should be confined to the games themselves, even if said games vary across a wide range of styles and platforms. I don't think he has disdain for the medium, I think he'd just rather not feel obligated to seek out another medium to get the most of the one he's currently invested in.

I wouldn't voice this as a disdain for either a medium or supplementary material -- I wouldn't be surprised if he feels the same way about Prime being canon or the games theoretically leaning on something it did -- but the idea makes sense. Nobody wants to be a fan of Sonic the hedgehog video games, be presented with a new video game, and for it to be full of stuff from a show or comic you had to buy beforehand, or else the story becomes less-comprehensible.

My disagreement simply comes in the fact that I can't view the IDW series as a meaningful burden on consumers if they're still willing to both pay money for and spend time playing some truly awful games that we accept as pillars of continuity. Even if it's bad, it's just easier on the brain to dedicate time to reading panels than most of what a given video game asks of you, bad or good. And, either way, I don't think the IDW series is so complex that the average gamer couldn't be updated on its events before a given game relying on them...not that they're actually doing that, since as Rokkan said, it's really not more prevalent than, say, the SatAM/AoStH cameos in Spinball, and that's showing no particular signs of changing. I think detractors of all this are afraid of Sonic getting the Marvel/Star Wars problem, where if you're not into everything you can't necessarily penetrate anything. I'm afraid of that possibility too. I just don't think we've seen any evidence that it's going to become a real problem anytime soon.

I don't necessarily think "well just read it" is a defense on its own, actually. It is actually really good that they are uploading the series for free, since it's one thing for a new Sonic story to rely on promotional material, it's another entirely for that material to also cost more money. When I talk about the motion comic idea, I absolutely think such a project shouldn't take any more money from the consumer. Include a relevant episode with a game that might require it? Sure. On youtube for free? Also fine. Exclusive to a paid streaming service? BZZZT, nope, you fail, get outta here.

The problem with what? What consequences? We're seeing the effect of IDW and Prime being canon right now, and the effect is that there isn't much of one. It's not causing a problem. Maybe it will later, but it hasn't yet. As of now, the biggest "problem" it causes is some people on a forum are annoyed. I can live with that.

I know why it's called "Clean Sweepstakes" in the comics, but it’s funny to think about a kid who has no idea about IDW and assumes Tails is talking about one of those contests where you win a prize and someone comes to clean your house or business.

This entire conversation happened over what seems to be an edited line that doesn't even use the same font as the game. Well at least the convo was pretty well thought.

Reddit. Don't worry guys, I'll subject myself to 60 minutes of playing Superstars as punishment for my carelessness.

If that line really is edited, don't let Ian Flynn see it, it might give him some ideas. :V

I'm willing to be equal, if I'm wrong I'll subject myself to watching every cutscene in Sonic Lost World in 4k Resolution.

I thought that screenshot was weird since the subtitles were not aligned

but I looked that over because there's actually a lot of dialogue in the game so far where the subtitles are misaligned
