Yeah I think the days of banger Sonic soundtracks being assured ended in 2017.

I think Frontiers, Shadow Gens had good soundtracks. Superstars had an OST which I think is well composed but horribly produced. Sonic 4 is very similar.

Racing Crossworlds is an anomaly where I think the compositions are sub par and the sound production is horrendous. The best music tracks so far have been the returning ones. The Crossworlds are also spared from the horrendous third lap remix.

Idk why people are getting upset, everything in the beta was pretty standard and all these previews either sound exactly like the original song it's remixing or just decent.
Yeah, Sonic Mania really missed the mark. Playing back midi files in FL studio didn't make for a great soundtrack and it's unfortunate that the scammer who made it happen keeps getting work in other parts of the series.

There have always been highs-and-lows for this series OSTs, but ultimately it never becomes truthfully that much of a concern. (Sonic 4 Episode 1 and 2, Sonic Chronicles, 1/2 of Sonic Superstars)

    But then you also get

    - Even some of this, yeah.

Hell I can't even say this entire OST is bland, that's all it is at worst. Bland, middle of the road. Not high, not low.
I can say confidently that I had liked:
    - Rainbow Garden
    - Wonder Museum
    - Kraken Bay
    - Holoska
    - Dinosaur Jungle
    - Roulette Road
    - Sky Road
    - MAGMA PLANET
    - WHITE CAVE

And to a lesser extent in regards to mattering compared to the tracks but I still liked:
    - Character Select
    - Garage
    - Matchmaking Lobby
    - Victory Theme

So sure, we may be middle of the road. But I'd only be concerned if this were to affect the next mainline game. For now, I think it's ok. Not mid, not great, but ok?

My current theory is that Shilz is the essence of the Unpopular Sonic Opinions thread given flesh by some capricious god

We're in a weird era of Sonic music where the lot of it isn't all that good, but no one seems to mind much. About 10-15 years ago the Frontiers OST would've gotten much more scrutiny and Superstars would've been raked over the coals as much as Sonic 4 was. But I guess Forces and (some of) Lost World really pared down people's expectations on Sonic game OSTs (if not the games as a whole). Musically it just sounds like they're coasting, and Crossworlds continues that trend.

Hating on Mania's OST is crazy talk though, I'm sorry. We're just huffin' stuff at that point. And what kind of dig is "MIDI sequences in a music software tool"? Are we not aware of how commonplace that is? lol

I'll give a super unpopular opinion but for me the Sonic soundtracks have been hit or miss since 06.

Not that the music has been bad, or that I don't have favorites from the games since then, I just think a lot of it doesn't really click with a hedgehog blasting through terrain at super sonic speeds. Especially with the Ohtani in the lead games.

There have been some exceptions. Generations/Transformed/Mania/SxS Generations are top notch for me. But they're basically remix albums so no surprise there.

Superstars was the biggest disappointment for me though. All the stories about how specific Oshima wanted the CD soundtrack to sound that I was hoping for a similar treatment for Superstars.

Rintaro Soma to me has been the new breakout composer from the "fresh blood" at the Sega Sound Team.

I think his songs contain that 90s flavor but still has the contemporary vibe that makes the songs sound unique but familiar.

I wouldn't mind him taking the lead in a future game.

IMO Unleashed and Colors have great OSTs, but I do think the main series (mostly) stops there.

Once Ohtani realized piano/orchestra and screechy electro-rave stuff was his comfort zone, the series "sound" took a pretty sharp nosedive. It's like how when Jun got complacent the music got way worse, except instead of being outlandishly bad it's just kind of.. uninteresting? Pedestrian? That's an arguably worse fate for something as in-your-face and transgressive as Sonic intends to be.

I do like Rintaro's contributions a lot though; I'm interested in seeing him take the reigns next game. I just hope that if he becomes the next heir to the Sonic OST throne that he doesn't get worn down like the previous two.

They should just get spiralmouth back together to make Sonic Twinsanity soundtrack.

Don't worry, the fun part is this could blow up in my face and the joke would really be on everyone if we were to find out he was behind one of the tracks I actually liked in the beta.

I think those games have great OSTs, I just think the majority of them don't have a "Sonic-y" sound to me. But that feeling varies from person to person.

For example, in 06 the only two songs I can think of that has that feel are Boss VS Character/White Acropolis Snow Peak/Town Mission 4.

    From Unleashed Night Battle Suit/Tornado songs/Spagonia Day/Dark Gaia's Spawn Boss/Eggmanland.

    From Colors VS Rotatatron & Refrishinator/Planet Wisp/Aquarium Park/Asteroid Coaster/Terminal Velocity.

I think you can take those songs and put them in say Adventure or Sonic 3 and they wouldn't feel out of place while the remaining songs would if that makes sense, despite if they're good or not.

It's not that franchises can't try new things, but I think that they always need a little of sprinkle from the era they came from.

Like how Star Wars always has a John Williams touch in its soundtracks. Or the same with James Bond with Monty Norman/John Barry.

I kind of see the vision of what they were thinking with the CrossWorlds soundtrack.

Someone in the Sega Sound Team just needed to drop a little more Casiopea/Omega Tribe/Yellow Magic Tribe/Dreams Come True influences into the OST and it would've been perfect.

As someone who listens to the entire madworld soundtrack regularly, I vote for the next sonic soundtrack to be entirely gangsta rap.

It sounds just dumb enough to be plausible but there's no concrete evidence behind it, so I'm also choosing to believe it's fake.

We literally had the Yogscast and three Team Fortress 2 characters in Transformed, this sounds totally believable in comparison to that.

Oh so you mean you hope it doesn’t happen?

I’ve always loved TMNT. Seen all the movies and cartoons, except Rise because I don’t have Paramount +. Caught 6 episodes of the current one they aired on Nick. Mutant Mayhem was alright imo. Not my favorite but not my least favorite either.

Anyway I hope this is real. Probably be DLC but still awesome. Imagine a track based on NYC.

(If anyone wants to know the Van in the picture is from the Hot Wheels Racerverse line. It came with Shredder. He’s behind it. They make all 4 turtles in separate vehicles which I wanna get.)
