Good day fellow fans! I have been collecting Mega Drive games for quite a while now, mostly Japanese MD games. A few years back I bought a collection from a fellow collector and there was a cart of Sonic 3D Flickies Island "Asian" in the collection. I never payed much attention to it until last weekend when I started selling doubles and items I dont really use much.... I cannot find anything about this cart, no pictures, no data, other than it supposedly released in Asia with an image of the cover mixing several PAL regions, which is not uncommon for Asian games... I have compared it with multiple Japanese carts of my collection, it certainly looks legit. Is there anyone that has this version and can confirm the label looks like this? It has a PAL Sonic 3D Flickies Island label (looks legit), the typical English label on the back which is usually the case with Asian games and a shell that also looks legit. Any info would be welcome and much appreciated. Please find some pictures here: https://ibb.co/pj9ypspp https://ibb.co/rgqNkhj https://ibb.co/Dg66pHX9 https://ibb.co/kVtGjmc9 https://ibb.co/JWzKdQZv
https://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_3D:_Flickies'_Island There's a scan of the Asian box on the wiki, it looks identical to the EU variant, so it matches the label of your cart. https://info.sonicretro.org/File:S3D_MD_AS_cover.jpg
Yes, this is the only thing I could find in regards to it's release. Indeed, it makes the label on the cart match... Just strange that there are no sales or anything found with the Asian version. If there is any interest, perhaps I can try and scan the cart so it can be added into the DB? I'm trying to find somekind of value to put on it as I'm selling off some items from my collection, but before I do, I can make a scan...
Just what are the "Asian" variants from and for? It's documented to an extent on SR but I don't think I've actually seen an explanation for them
I’ve certainly never heard of it and it looks like an EU label on a Japanese shell. Could you open it and post an image of the board. That’d be an easy way to tell real fast if it’s a fake.
It's a nebulous region that Sega invented, which as said is basically "anything that isn't Japanese, South Korean or European". It spreads from the middle east to (the real) South-East Asia - a catch-all "rest of the world" category. So this version of Sonic 3D (which seems legitimate btw) would be for any of these places. And yes it is messy. As to why it's called "Asia" it's Sega's terminology, not ours. Asian Mega Drive carts tend to favour Western art, but are of the Japanese form factor. I'm guessing a lot of Asian consoles were repurposed Japanese stock, which means there's a cartridge lock - that's why games have that notch in the side. Asian games are not well documented. We went through a period at Sega Retro where we were finding tons of "new" games - it's literally a case where people haven't written information down, which is why you can't find any. But the wiki is editable by anyone~
Thats an idea, scared of damaging the label on the back though.... I'll really have to think that one over...
X-ray it. If you know anyone that works as a security guard, ask them to scan it, perhaps. No, I’m not kidding.
I have an Asian "NTSC Version" of Street Fighter 2: Special Championship Edition that has the same thing going on where the Japanese style cartridge has a European label on it, so I can confirm other games did this.
