I don't know how isolated this is since I only ever tried it on my machine, but here's the deal. One day I was at my Grandma's house, about 6 years ago, and I had my genesis 3 with me and I was playing sonic 3d blast. I somehow managed to talk her in to trying the game, and she was saying she felt silly because she had never played a video game before. Her living room is quite large, and she was sitting in a recliner way far away from the TV, and so she leaned back and the controller got yanked from the port. The moment it got unpluged the level select came up! It was in the middle of gameplay, it totally cought me off guard. I hadn't put in any codes or anything.

I actually got this to work a couple of times after that, I don't know excactly how it worked but it was repeatable to an extent.

Old. There was a topic about this not too long ago (but I forget its name). This'll work on any Genesis model, to my knowledge, and simply flicking the cartridge can do this. The thing is, when something "goes wrong", instead of reseting to the Sega logo, it's set to take you to the level select screen. You can do this on an emulator by loading a savestate from a different game. An interesting note: This method displays the "Congratuions! you've found the secret level select!", while the BARACUDA code does not. In a way though, this level select is secret, because of its obscure method accessing it. =P

    Whatever catches my fancy
Do some goddamn research before posting bug reports. This has been said a million times already.

3D Blast's level select is triggered by any machine exception. Yanking out the controller in the middle of the game can cause an exception. Ergo, yanking out the controller in the middle of the game can bring up Sonic 3D Blast's level select menu.

Heh, yeah, I can see people saying that, Mad Echidna, I mean, it does sound untrue...

    Yeah.

I can see how it's problem that I didn't look into wether this is new or not. It's a bit frustrating how like 65% of stuff we as a community "know" is burried in boards somewhere. I'm going to add this to S.H.I.T. if it's not there yet.

Yeah, you got a point. While SHIT has lots crap, it's nowhere near the amount of crap that's "known". There's also information hoarding to take into account. That, is something I really can't stand.

There's information hoarding and then there's common knowledge. :P

Actually, yanking out the controller shouldn't cause any problems. I think the Genesis controller is set to return a 'null' status when no buttons are being pressed; it's not like any data transfer is occurring. A few games can detect when the controller has been removed, but none of the Sonic games have this.

What probably happened when you yanked out the controller was that you also jogged the cartridge. Some of the pins lost contact for a split second, and that's what triggered the exception.

Trust me, I've pulled out the controller MANY times while playing Genesis games before ;)

Or there was a momentary spike in the signal which triggered an exception. I recall getting sparks when I unplugged something (I think it was the uber-old mouse I used when I had my separate Win95 system).

Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
Although, I don't own an actual Sonic 3D Blast cartridge, I've known about this for a while. I've seen a topic about this before (and I'm not sure it was only this forum, either).

Whether this was already found or not, this was still a great find. ;) I can beat the game now! I always get stuck in like the 3rd area because I get sick of the 3D-ness because an analog controller would make life so much easier.

Just like playing Super Mario 64 on your Nintendo DS. :P

HA! I've got all the way up to Volcano Valley without cheats! And with all 7 Chaos Emeralds!

...But then I got bored and quit.
