Can someone tell me why character jitter like that when he's falling at 1:50? I'm curious because I also noticed this effect in ShTH and Forces.
I haven't been following this project very closely but I am interested in checking it out. Does Silver release contain Sonic and Shadow campaigns or do I have to download each release separately?
Not anything recently that I've heard. From what I can tell, work is still continuing on End of the World and the bosses.
Does the current version of P-06 have any of the story cutscenes? If not, are they planning to add them after all stages get finished?
Because anything short of including mp4s of every cutscene as-is would constitute an insane amount of effort for something that is infamously terrible, and including mp4s of every cutscene as-is would bloat the file size for something that isn't worth it.
Coming off of the hype around Unleashed Recompiled and the re-evaluation that game has gone through, I finally decided to try out P-06. I played the original '06 once back in like 2011 and immediately decided I didn't like it so going into this was pretty interesting, it was like playing an entirely original game. The level of dedication and creativity here is next level and I really don't want to downplay the incredible work gone into this; this is the only version of '06 worth playing. I can't lie though, I still think the game is kinda lame? Instead of an unplayable bad game you've now got a functionally robust yet fundamentally boring one. I think maybe some fans oversold it a bit, I had seen some put P-06 on a really unfair pedestal with a general sentiment that 06 is now "the best Sonic game ever made" and "worthy of the title Adventure 3". I really don't think that's true and it's not really what P-06 is trying to be, its main goal is to just be a better version of Sonic 06. Since I don't really remember how the original Sonic 06 felt, my only real frame of reference is Adventure 1 + 2 so by that comparison it just feels off. Sonic's control is fine, if a bit slower than the Adventure games, but the level designs never let you really take advantage of his movement. The gem powers are also not interesting at all imho. Shadow's gameplay is kinda dull too, he's a slower more boring version of Sonic and I don't care for any of the "combat" in the game. Knuckles kind of sucks too compared to SA2 which is a real shame. Silver is actually pretty fun! Maybe it still doesn't fit in well for a Sonic game but on its own it's a fun idea to essentially take the gravity gun from Half-Life 2 and turn it into a platformer. I still don't care for him as a character lol. I actually kind of liked running around the test level as Sonic, his movement is better suited to wide open spaces. The original idea for '06 was to be more open right? Makes you wonder what could've been. Again, it's an amazingly well put together fan project. Maybe if I was more familiar with the original '06 I would've appreciated this more.
I wonder if we'll see any efforts to recreate Project 06's improvements and additions as mods to the actual 360 version of Sonic 06, especially if the game ever sees its own recompilation. What I've seen of Project 06 is impressive, but leaving out large parts of the game (even if they're not good parts) leaves me feeling conflicted, even if the reasons for the limited scope are very understandable. I would love to try out a tuned-up version of the whole game, even if the stuff between levels was largely untouched (besides the passive benefits of the improved handling).
If it's at all possible, I'd like to see Sonic '06 with the hedgehog engine lighting. My understanding was that the team wanted the lighting to be as it turned-out in Unleashed, but they settled for what they did in '06 because they didn't finish what they wanted.
Yeah, I've said it before but as impressive as P-06 is, I think it demonstrates that 06 is just kind of fundamentally flawed and no amount of polish is going to change that. With maybe two or three exceptions the level design isn't very good, the gameplay is slow, and the amigo system isn't well thought-out. I get the sense that Sonic Team was trying to combine the more open-ended, less linear approach of SA1 with the straightforward and reaction-based gameplay of SA2 and the result is a sloppy in-between that fails to capture what made those games fun and interesting. It's basically Sonic Adventure But Worse.
There's been some mods that end up changing the gameplay and all that, restoring / finishing functionality, or overhauling the physics. But nothing that really attempts to fully copy p-06 since a lot of the 06 """purists""" (very loose usage of that word here lol) aren't big fans of a lot of how it handles changes. It's also fallen off a lot since the people who were interested in modding 06 got tired of and discouraged by all the "Why don't you just mod p-06?" questions. We've seen a few different projects bake global illumination for 06 levels, It's nothing all THAT special, not many light sources to bounce off of in most places, and you lose the vertex colors 06 baked in to the level geometry which largely does the same thing but with manual effort. I think ChaosX did a pretty good just touching up the "fake" lighting with all his tweaks and color correction. Sonic Generations - STH2006 Project - Dusty Desert - Terrain Update - YouTube
coming back to this quickly because one thing I forgot to mention is that the characters never fucking shut up! I don't mind one or two lines of flavour dialogue but this is way too much, the characters never say anything of value and it actively gets annoying on repeat playthroughs. there's this one part in Crisis City's mach section where Sonic says "Jump!" way too early before you actually need to jump and I swear to God it throws me off everytime.
