Sonic the Hedgehog IDW/Current Western Comic Megathread

I mean, the artists are huge nerds, especially for Manga and Anime.
So while Shonen jump is not the only anthology series, not even in Japan, it's safe to assume it was their main source of inspiration for this.

At worst this is just ineffective marketing, it's fine.

 

Yeah, like I said it's not a big deal. Just always a bit of an eyeroll when people do the Boss Baby meme unironically.

So, like, is it possible to have this thread be expanded to include any western Sonic comic line-up? Personally I'd prefer having a designated 'any paper-produced medium with panels' zone, but manga having it's own section is fine enough. Though, seeing as the upcoming Sonic x DC series is both a) A one time deal (that we can currently foresee), b) Not IDW affiliated outside of creatives working on it, and c) People will probably talk about it here anyways, methinks it'd be convenient to have this as a modern Sonic, post-Archie comics thread. This would probably include media campaigns in which artists donate their art for use, like with Fast Friends Forever, and the comics created for promotional use, like the Sonic Movie ones..!
Just a thought I had. I'm not too sure on how to approach this sorta thing on a forum, so yeah. ^^;;

 

Yeah, the DC crossover just released previews. So perhaps a "Modern Sonic Comics" thread, for upcoming and currently running comics, and "Classic Sonic Comics" thread, where comics no longer in print are discussed, so we can just keep everything together in both current and old form?

 

I think "Classic Sonic Comics" might convey a very different connotation than intended. Maybe "Defunct Sonic Comics"? "Vintage"? "Retro"?

 

"Old-school" sounds good to me. Or just cut out the middleman and say "Archie/Fleetway/Manga".

 

May I suggest legacy media.

 

'Legacy' / 'Old-school' sounds reasonable, imo! Then every 20 - 30 years or so we'd flush that hypothetical thread's stuff to that section? That's how I'd approach archival stuff! Does this forum support threadmarks a-la SpaceBattles, cause that'd make sifting through the eras much easier. :3

Latest DC x Sonic book is out and it's more of the usual goodness. This isn't a particularly substantial crossover in the way the Archie Mega Man ones were (those did have many more issues to work with, mind) but it is very fun and charming and I think it 100% succeeds in just cutting loose with the concept. + - Seeing Sonic and Shadow deck Reverse Flash and the Joker were particular highlights.   With three issues to go, I think we're about to be treated to some great action.

 

Two more issues. It's 5 issues long. Yes, I expected more too.

If this is where we're supposed to talk about the DC comic specifically now, I think this is probably the best one so far. It's still got that samey format but I think it's way better at it than the other ones because we're actually seeing characters interact with the new elements.

So they + - referenced Rankles and did a massive dig at Chaos Knuckles from the Archie comics, amusing jokes, but they've also unleashed a great evil in that same scene...  

They've shown + - what the cast look like barefooted. Beast Boy, you fool!  

 

Yeah I noticed that one too, but maybe + - Gar just doesn’t know how Sonic characters’ feet should look and just assumed?   Not really sure if that’s how that’d work.

 

+ - I think his power is to change into any animal he's seen, so what you see is one to one what they look like. He's displayed it on aliens and mythological beasts as well, so...  

+ - Also, Knuckles', well, knuckles aren't natural, they're on the glove.  

 

While not related to Sonic comic, it's related to Sonic comic ARTISTS, they did release their comic anthology featuring original stories and characters, it's free to read -or you can pay whatever price you want-, give it a shot.

The deluxe edition of Sonic Racing: Crossworlds comes with a tie-in comic published by IDW.

I really wonder what the point of this tie-in comic is. Are they really going to try and explain why Sonic is racing with Hatsune Miku and Minecraft Steve?
