it seems very Crash Team Racing-esque which is cool

 

Surprised to see Jet the Hawk. To a certain degree I'm a little concerned the devs are biting off a bit more than they can chew but damn this game looks really good. Might actually pick it up at launch for once!

 

I wouldn't worry about the Initial D guys.

If it was Sumo again, I'd be worried. Texas Chainsaw wasn't their best effort. Nor was TSR.

 

We got a bit of car customization!

They cooked. It looks more robust than I was expecting and I love it.

 

I hope customization is not too expensive as it was in Superstars.

 

What do you mean? Only 10 special stage runs and you can unlock 1/4th of the Metal Sonic parts! Be sure to use it in Battle Mode!

 

It’s likely that it’s all loaded into RAM beforehand, it’s probably why some of them look a bit basic and barren in terms of assets to keep the memory footprint down, streaming is a possibility too but I think that would cause some nasty performance hiccups on consoles like Switch especially with how UE’s infamous traversal stutter is which hopefully this game avoids.

The music seems more chill this time compared to the nonstop onslaught of Green Light Ride in TSR where you’re hearing it constantly even on the loading screen.

 

I’m really hoping stats don’t affect custom cars too much, or maybe there’s an option to redistribute the stat spread to your liking. I really love the P-Wing in Mario Kart 8 aesthetically but it’s an absolutely shit kart. On the other hand, I don’t want to have to create something gaudy or otherwise not to tastes in order to maximise my chances of winning. Also hoping there’s no limit on custom cars or that they’re saved on a per-character basis, since I might still want to keep colour schemes themed to characters.

 

I'm beginning to wonder how much the extreme gear is going to feel like an afterthought. Do we assume it'll be subject to all the same customization options?

 

I think it'd be difficult to do given the form factor of extreme gear, and the suggestion that this is just going to be board-types, but if we get a set of bodies with different stats and the ability to customise their paintjobs, I'll be happy with that. I still need to see/hear more on how the gear actually plays first to put my mind at ease, so my mind isn't really on customisation for them at this stage.

 

What if extreme gears let us customize the outfit of the character?

 

Frontiers leaving all that shit on the table has convinced me it'll be a cold day in the dark chao garden before Sonic himself gets any kind of major outfit customization.

Also, unless they're going above and beyond with exclusive ones (which we have no reason to assume they would), it'd be impossible to design most of the costume pieces to be able to fit on differently-shaped characters.

Yeah, sorry, without any evidence I have no confidence for that whatsoever.

I think it'll just be a fun extra. It's a kart racing game. The board is a kart variant. And that's fine. This is a spiritual successor to Transformed and not Riders. Definitely a good thing.

 

Anyway, having the Riders-styled outfits when riding Extreme Gear or as an option would be interesting, at least. Come to think of it, should the Babylon Rogues have non-Riders outfits when driving normal vehicles?

 

I would love to see the Riders outfits return, especially for the girls. Hopefully it's not too much to ask.

 

I think that would be cool and a reasonable request. To be honest they'd be kind of mad not to offer cosmetic DLC like this.

 

Missing that opportunity wouldn’t be the weirdest they’ve (not) done.

 

Frankly, it would feel weird to have everyone (outside the Babylon Rogues) riding Extreme Gear without wearing their Rider's outfits. The Rider's games weren't just about racing, they were also about looking cool in the process.

There's a mod for Generations that has the makings for what you're talking about.
