This game better be the best sonic racing game of all time because it appears nearly certain (post the Switch 2 launch trailer) that it’ll be competing with a new mario kart this year. At the very least it needs to do something unique to make it stand out as more than Sonic themed mario kart

Sorry I'm coming late to the party but what do we already know about this game so far?

This situation, where they are making a kart racing game SO similar to mario kart that there is no way they could compete, makes me think that they should've stuck with the Sonic Riders subseries. Riders is so aesthetically and mechanically different than Mario Kart that I really do think they could've coexisted. Like, the fact that Riders has a story mode at all would differentiate it enough from mario kario alone.

I wouls take anything over another Kart racer. The only appeal the first 2 had was that it was a SEGA crossover.

We know it's called Sonic Racing Cross Worlds and Shadow is in it.

SEGA haven't said a word since the nothing burger of a reveal trailer.

Given there's a Mario Kart coming on Switch 2 - almost certainly at launch, given it being shown - I'd be stunned if this game isn't thrown to the end of the year. This one's your November pickup, lads.

Honestly, I think it's too early to call this game as dead in the water.

    Looking at past experience:

    - Team Sonic Racing got decked by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Crash Team Racing because out of the three it was just simply the weakest experience and content. Like I'm fairly sure sonic is a bigger brand than Crash but Crash had more

    - Sonic Superstars got decked by Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2 because it was the weakest one here...even if Spider-Man 2 sucked. Anyway, Spider-Man 2 has the success of the last games to work off and Mario Wonder had Quality and Mario.

Basically CrossWorlds isn't fucked because it's sonic, it's fucked if it's as dull as team sonic racing. So if it's literally anything but dull, I can see it having it's own success

    Yeah if they release another:

    - 15 Character Roster

    - 1/3 Remastered Tracks from Previous Sumo Digital Racing Games

    - No Post-Launch Support

    - Dead Online

Then yeah, of course CrossWorlds is dead, but it isn't the brand itself but the actual proudct.

Even then, that depends on if or rather when Mario Kart releases.

    - Is it even coming out this year?
    - Is it even coming out at the same time frame as Sonic CrossWorlds

If you can release a Crash racing game in the same year as a Mario Kart, you can release a Sonic racing game the same year as a Mario Kart if you can give a damn about it.

For all we know, CrossWorlds is June 2025, and Mario Kart 9 is Holiday 2025 or Summer 2026. So yeah I got nothing, all I know is Shadow has a car and DK got cosmetic surgery in-between games

Only thing we knew based on SEGA Asia site mistakenly leaving some text is that it will be more inline with Transformed and should have Sea/Land/Air gimmick, and something about "space and time" that could mean literally anything

......Mario Kart 8 DX was 2017, both CTR and TSR were 2019 releases.

    OR
Crossworlds is only gonna have a problem competing with Mario Kart if it tries to compete with Mario Kart, both in content and the circumstances of its release. Maybe it's doing that, but "cars, portals and Shadow in 2025" is not nearly enough information to tell us for certain.

That said, this is one more reason they should have both transforming vehicles AND extreme gear. Extreme gear can already do all 3 things anyway! Even as a largely cosmetic option you're satiating a lot of fan thirst.

Oh ok fine, IF you can release a successful Crash Racing Game on a console with a pre-built audience for Mario Kart, you can most likely release a successful Sonic racing game on same said systems IF there's enough of a time window difference. If Mario Kart is a Holiday release whereas CrossWorlds is a Summer release that'll be fine. If it's the other way around, that'll be fine.

We know nothing meaningful about either game but leave it to Sonic fans to complain that Sonic's cooked if they don't do [specific thing I want them to do that would probably flop worse especially if Sonic is meant to unironically compete with Mario]. Very predictable, this fanbase.

No one who would not buy a Sonic racing game if Mario Kart is in the vicinity would give any more of a damn if it had the gameplay from the sub-series whose last game was the prime example of Xbox Kinect slop. There is literally no reality in which Sonic is "not cooked" if the threshold for "being cooked" is "not selling as well as a Mario Kart game".

So long as it's literally not in the same two weeks, Sonic is fine.

My opinion on CrossWorlds remains the same: it'll do good if it comes with some genuinely interesting and fun ideas, which we don't know if it will but we don't know if it won't either.

They're not competing for the same audience. Nintendo is going to decimate it on their own hardware, but XrossBoats is going to at least have the chance to gain some following on other platforms. I don't think they need to worry about Mario unless they have som ridiculous sales expectation standard.

Also, I think you're downplaying CTR Nitro Fueled. It's a remake of one of the best Kart Racers ever made, and it was a damn good remake. Team Sonic Racing just sucked.

Superstars' "disappointment" in sales (I put it in quotes because they stress they expected numbers similar to Frontiers) hopefully tempered Sega's expectations for Sonic sales that aren't the big 3D games.

Again, we have to see what CrossWorlds is actually about, but unless it really looks like a huge effort, it won't be a game that needs to do crazy sales to be considered a success.

And if it is a huge effort game, then I think it will do very well on that presentation alone.

Look I'll say yeah Crash Team Racing IS one of the best Kart Racers ever made, but it's also apart of a brand that by 2019 only had a successful remake to it's name.

The last Crash game beforehand on consoles was on the Wii - Xbox - PS2. So basically what I'm getting at is that kids who had PS4s likely didn't know crap about Crash, teenagers have way other stuff to play like shooters, and really by then, Crash would be a 50-50 with Adult PS fans. Basically they either knew him or they didn't. What I'm getting at is that if you can pull off a success story for Crash THAT early on in his revival and way before Crash 4, you can do the same for a quality Sonic racing game.

Basically what I'm getting at is that.

I mean... fair. I am a little biased because I loved Riders when it released on the gamecube. I didn't really mean specifically "They need to bring back riders!!", what I mean was that there was a period in time when sonic tried to distinguish itself visually and mechanically and was able to carve a market niche because of it, and they don't really do that anymore. Riders had the whole "extreme sports" angle, it had a youthful punk edge to it, it was kind of sci-fi, it had an actual story mode with cutscenes and plot developments and everything. No one could ever confuse Riders and Mario Kart, but an uninitiated consumer could look at Team Racing and be like "oh, it's like mario kart but with sonic in it." They don't have to bring back riders, I'd just like some of the flair and originality of that era.
