Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe Thread (& Knuckles)

Well, Sonic 3 had many scenes with only the anthros, so go figure, I guess?

Also, does anyone here know of ways to acquire the movie's cup topper figures?
I'd love to have, at the very least, Sonic's and Shadow's...
My local cinema and another one some friends of mine reside in only have Knuckles and Tails...

 

I was walking around in a store after work today and a parent was wheeling around a toddler in a shopping cart nearby. The toddler kept joyfully yelling 'SEGA!!' the way it sounds at the beginning of early (and a few other) Sonic games and kept on over and over and over again and the parent seemed mildly annoyed. I loved it.

I now will have to question if this would have ever transpired in an alternate universe without the live-action movies.

 

Disney is crying so hard they paid boxofficemojo to stop tracking Sonic 3 so they stop getting community noted when they lie about Mufasa being the #1 movie.

 

How do you know that they were paid off?

There's a whole nut job conspiracy going around about Disney bullying theaters to stop showing Sonic which is complete horse shit.

 

According to an interview with Jim Carrey at Cinema Today, Jim is actually interested in coming back for Sonic 4, he just needs a break right now.
Amazing they got him for not only a sequel but now a full anthology.

 

I admittedly would be fine with Jim coming back for another movie, he's been a delight to watch on-screen so far.

Spoiler: The film. The film Sonic 3, the film especially made to advertise Sonic, Sonic's film.

... But l think because of the bittersweet homage given to the previous films via the climatic death of Carrey Robotnik, it'd be narratively wiser to utilize Carrey by having him take a film off or act more like a game-Gerald presence with flashbacks / video recordings. Add the fact that Agent Stone grappling with said loss is literally the best excuse to develop him further, that Shadow is still alive and could be a key player, the introduction of both Amy and the Brotherhood™ in the post-credits -- thats so, so many characters to deal with. Paramount has a lot of work cut out for them.

To reiterate, EggJim doesn't need to wholly die off, but a certain level of tact must be given to keep said 'death' scene on the Ark effective and worthwhile. It's more complicated than saying "It's just a scene, it's not that important" when the vibes are literally the most important part of it. The scene is bigger than the scene itself, it's effectively a quick iconic highlight of Jim's time on set through referential sentimentality. I don't know if I'm conveying myself well, but I hope I am. It's the viiiiiibes.

 

The problem is that no matter what you do, you're ultimately going to need to develop a new villain for Sonic to fight, but within the established games and movies, they have nowhere to go. As far as villainy is concerned, Ivo Robotnik is simply the best there is. You're either dialing back what 3 did, or taking a chance on some other guy that may not be as good. You'll almost certainly have to deal with the second problem no matter what if Jim declines to come back.

So like...what do you do? Audiences are not gonna buy Stone without Robotnik, I don't think so at least.

 

They still have Rava the Destroyer.

 

I'm not sure you could come up with a better example of the movies "having nowhere to go" than that.

 

Actually, whatever happened to the general sentiment of 'Lets conjure up a new adversary to do something with?' Has the act of creation just stopped? I'm genuinely curious if people would rather not get a new Sage or Ancients - not an equivalent per say, I just mean anything new. I kind of like the idea of having a villain representative for the movies that we haven't seen in canon yet, and if not new, so far Agent Stone is our closest contender.

We got Metarex as a particular animation standout, Lyric for the Wii U since I feel bad, a thousand lackeys for literally any media's inclusion of the Eggman Empire, Clutch & Mimic as the newest foes introduced... Why not get something unique for the movies? It really just is about doing things with characters, imo.

I would count the Brotherhood of Metallix as 'new enough' since SEGA refuses to touch anything StC (the 900 Adventure does not count). I will have my UK win.

 

I mean you have Metal Sonic who impersonated Eggman in Sonic Heroes and was a threat to them, and in the IDW comics while Eggman was out of commission he took matter into his hands, he can easily work as a movie villain with appropriate writing, he is known and have striking design and works as a rival as well

 

Carrey is an absolute joy in these films. If he wants to keep coming back, then I'm fine with them pulling whatever bullshit card they come up with to dodge his death from the previous film

 

Yeah, this is roughly the direction I'd personally take it.

Metal Sonic, Eggman's final creation, made using the quill Sonic gave to him during their short-lived team-up, is bequeathed to Stone. Stone initially and half-heartedly tries to follow on from Eggman and use his creations to take over the world, but proves generally inadequate. Metal Sonic basically gets tired of his shit and becomes Eggman using the Terminator shapeshifting he had in Heroes to boss Stone around and get the job done right and the usual shenanigans ensue I dunno I'm not a writer but it's how you give Stone the time his character needs with Carrey still in the limelight without actually bringing Eggman back from the dead.

Also Carrey does his robot dance again.

Bringing back Carrey as essentially Robotnik from the first movie, being more cold and calculating after the developments the other characters went through seems like it has potential. How to do it right isn't up to me. Maybe we can see him physically fight the Sonic cast, shocking them. Maybe work the fight into his obligatory dance scene, lol?

 

I didn't bring up the idea of an original villain because I neither trust the movie team to make that choice nor to do a particularly good job at following Carrey's act. Even the characters you've listed don't really compare. You'd need to go very hard on the intimidation factor for all of them, but even then they worked because of their contrast with Eggman when both are still villains.

See but it feels like if Metal impersonated Robotnik in movie 4, then the development we're talking about Stone supposedly getting isn't nearly as present, and for any adults watching, any foreshadowing they pulled for it will probably be the most obvious thing in the world and not feel like it has much tension. Plus, I think a lot of the audience would actually be upset.

Cause like, it's no different than Randal and Rachel not being in Movie 3 for real, but applied to the biggest name on the films and the second most-important character in the franchise. You've watched this whole movie thinking one thing and the reveal is just that he's still dead from a completely unrelated event. It just feels like it would fall really flat.

I guess you could have Metal impersonate him and him secretly turn out to be alive. Then you could pull the tarp off earlier in the film, do everything we're talking about with Stone, and then his reward for growing is Eggman showing up in a Big Damn Hero moment (to him, not necessarily Sonic and the others). I dunno, I'd have to see someone plot it out pretty well.

But I dunno, Metal Sonic is cool but whoever voices him still wouldn't be a big draw in the same way as Carrey. And he's just...not that fun a villain! He's meant to be menacing more than he is funny, and Jim Carrey is both!

Robotnik would've been hiding out in a Mexican motel. And the crab mech would've been more... well, crab like. It was cut for pacing.
Robotnik also would've already had one of Sonic's quills, and was still bald. Also seems to be the source of burrito drone's design in the Jakk's movie collection set, whereas in the final movie burrito drone is a microwave that shits sauces.
