Sonic's only got a $120m production budget to worry about here. They're fine.

    That $200m from Mufasa though...

The comedy in these movies reminds me of a cross between Excel Saga (which I love) and something like 1970s or 1980s childrens's animated shows like the Smurfs or Snorks or the SMB Super Show! (which is kind of lame, but in the case of Super Show spcifically, not without its campy charm).

And I never thought of Sonic as being comedic previously.

This third movie's more comedy-centric parts are almost Ren & Stimpyish. Almost.

It’s funny how the 3rd movie is more hilarious and funny while also more serious and dramatic, it worked really well imo

Last night, I finally went to watch it, with a couple friends.

Never a dull moment throughout the whole run, not even in moments some people claimed to be slower.
If anything, to me, it felt like it rushed the whole time due to cramming much material in a movie's time.
Loads of nods and easter eggs, but also a fair amount of forced plot points for the sole sake of progression.

Still, overall, it was a nice time and I enjoyed the movie.
Gotta hope Sonic 4 manages to be as good or better! xD

I really liked how the soundtrack improved in this movie, not just because it used material from games, but how even the licensed selected songs were good this time. I honestly think a lot of those fits with the movie.

What's been odd to me is the fact nobody so far mentioned here the Cup Toppers Sonic 2 & 3 have been having.
Last night, I noticed kids holding cinema menus with said toppers and I found them interesting...

The shoes seem to always be miscoloured on movie merch that isn't Jakk's, guess no one can be bothered to fully commit on that front.

Man, Japan really doesn't give a shit about Sonic, do they? They can't even blame this performance on the massive release gap between EN and JP, like what happened to 2.

I have a simple fix to get 3's numbers up in Japan; Put Korone in the corner and have her react to the movie :V

Now seems like a great time for SEGA to stop making so much shit JP-exclusive.

Superstars and Sonic 3 bombing hard in Japan? Now's the time for SEGA to try even harder to appeal to Japan. The floor can't go any lower! To the moon!

We're so back by the way

In the early '90s after having the first game since right after its release, I considered both animated series blasphemy. They were way different than the Japanese lore in the game (singular as it took a couple years before I got my hand on Sonic 2) and I considered it western trash like the Smurfs, totally divorced from the source material. Although I am an artist and animator with a particularly stringent approach so even as a young teenager, they did not appeal. I was super nitpicky.

Because this is a thread for the 'cinematic universe' at large:

As eye-rollingly corny as some of the gags in the movies have been and particularly with the first two movies, I am just really glad they didn't stoop so low as doing a needle drop to White Wedding by Billy Idol when the ring portal unleashed a wad of snow on the wedding in movie 2. I would have walked out if that happened but thankfully that isn't the case. That song is so overused in movies already. Crisis averted.

While on the subject of the infamous wedding scene, I am surprisingly one of its biggest defenders. Once I accepted the fact they're doing their own thing with these movies, I actually really enjoyed that scene because I found it so absurd and, with how it introduced G.U.N. in such a bizarre way, I couldn't help but appreciate the subterfuge and the slapstick included. Rachel is great in that scene in my opinion. I loved seeing them using Tails's strange tech and launching people into the air. It is like, that scene as a whole is something I normally wouldn't like and yet I found it really enjoyable and not sure why. It does things I wouldn't typically like in a movie – especially a Sonic movie – and yet, I liked it!

Sonic only works in Japan when its close to something already popular. Adventure 1 is very JRPG compared to the previous games. Frontiers as well, along with so much Evangelion in it I'm surprised there wasn't a drop of orange juice. Sonic, by himself, simply doesn't have wide appeal for that market, no matter the setting. I could understand back in the Saturn days this aversion, but it's like a grudge at this point.
