See? All it took for Sonic to become peak again was to bring back Shadow. Thanks Shadow, you've saved the franchise!

I realise this was the case with Sonic 2, but it’s honestly so gratifying to see Tyson Hesse credited as co-producer on this film. It’s a hell of a long way to have come from making fan comics, then licensed comics, then animated shorts. I like to see that as a testament to Tyson’s skill and dedication, but also the value that has been placed on Sonic fans and their creativity. The idea of this happening with something like a Nintendo IP is nigh unthinkable and I think that attitude is part of what makes Sonic an enduring icon.

So this is neither here nor there but I find it interesting how many less professional reviewers were interested in Sonic 3 versus the first two film.

    Movie 1 got 252 reviews
    Movie 3 got 190 reviews
    Movie 3 got 106 reviews

Considering movie 3 has a much higher RT than the other two, I'm curious to see how many of the reviewers who were critical of the first two films just didn't bother reviewing this one. That would explain the massive jump in RottenTomato score to me personally.

Especially with the massive drop on Sunday that made multiple box office sites change their predictions for this movies overall success. Those first two days were front loaded by fans who wanted to see it day one. An 82 million prediction only reaching 60 million is not normal even during Christmas season. That's a huge discrepancy.

Will be interesting to see how it all works out.

The Sunday drop is in line with other films in the same period. It's the Saturday drop that caused the predictions to turn around from the $70m+ range to $60m. As I mentioned previously, only two other comparable films (that I could find) had a Friday to Saturday drop in the weekend leading up to Christmas. That was Aquaman with -27% and Bumblebee with -9%. Sonic 3 had a -24% drop on Saturday. All my other comparable films went up on Saturday with Hobbit 3 going up +42%.

In regards to the Rotten Tomatoes score, you have to keep in mind that reviews are still coming in. Sonic 1 didn't have 252 reviews from the start. It had 141 by Monday. It isn't until March 4th that it broke 200 reviews. Reviews kept being added to the total count even after Sonic 2 had released. The total reviews on Sonic 3 is going to keep going up.

Today Sonic 3 and Mufasa are expected to both gross around 8 million with only a 500k to 1 million difference between them. Mufasa is slowly closing the box office gap. The Christmas season is going to be fun.

I recently saw a Forbes article that emerged in my Google feed that mentions Sonic 3 closing in on a billion dollars in sales internationally and I really had to do a double take. I am not making this up and this cannot be accurate because it isn't out in many territories yet, right? I just don't see that. I really want to trawl my Google history and find that article again and see if it has been edited.

I think he's saying that the Sonic film series is approaching one billion not Sonic 3 specifically.

That would make a bit of sense but the wording is weird.

Thank you. I must have misread the first time. In m defense I am usually bombarded with these articles late nights after my work shifts. I probably didn't catch a verb (or noun) or whatever in a sentence and misread.

All is well. They're always tossing numbers around in these reports. I try to be as informative as I can with my own reporting on here.

A couple more reviews went up on RT since last I checked bringing the film up to 88% as of this post. I don't think the film is leaving the 80% range at this point unless it gets hit by back to back rotten scores.

I haven't had a chance to look at my own numbers, but Deadline is projecting Sonic 3 to still come out on top with $50m over the next 5 days. Mufasa is showing some strong legs and their projections are showing $40m over the holiday period. It may end up pulling ahead over Sonic domestically if this trend continues. Mufasa is carrying a $200m budget vs. Sonic 3's $122m so they're going to need it.

Make no mistake though, Disney is not hurting. They're the only studio to cross $5 billion this year. They're also the first to do so since the pandemic.

Remember those walk-ins I kept talking about and the pendulum swinging? They're starting to show up.

Come on grandpa, we're almost at the theatre!
Sonic 3 was still the top film on Christmas Eve with $7.5m. That's a 25% drop versus it's Monday gross. Mufasa however ended up grossing $7.1m. That's an increase of 1%. Sonic is still projected to win Christmas Day, for now. Despite the lower reviews families are still choosing the latest Disney feature over the Hedgehog. Sonic may have won the opening weekend, but Mufasa is looking end up overtaking in the long run.

Make no mistake, this is still good performances for both studios. Disney gonna need those low drops to make their money back and Sonic 3 is still a success for Paramount.
