NGL, I thought it was going to be an Olive Garden gift card.

Gun was shown as being shady and corrupt in Knuckles, too.

I think they'll semi-retcon that scene like they did with the post-credits scene of the previous movie. In that scene Shadow wakes up on his own, but in this movie, he wakes up thanks to Gerald hacking into GUN's systems. I think (and hope) they'll do the same thing here. We could see at the start of the next movie and it turns out to be a dream Sonic had or something.

So yeah... hyped for Amy and Metal! The fact that there's multiples of Metal makes me think of that army of Metal Sonics from Sonic the Comic (which I still need to read through... someday). If they're aiming for an adaptation of that, that's a pretty deep cut.

    Other various spoiler-y thoughts:
    • The action scenes were a lot of fun to watch. Loved Sonic and Shadow's fight across the planet.
    • The flashback with Maria and Shadow was cute. Wish we could have seen more of their time together. Maybe if they decide to do a Shadow series we'll see that?
    • Keanu did alright as Shadow, though there were some line deliveries that sounded like they could have used another take.
    • I do think Shadow's face turn happened a little too quickly/conveniently. Him and Sonic talking did kinda feel like a repeat of Sonic and Knuckles' scene near the end of 2.
    • Would have been nice to see people on Earth celebrating the Eclipse Cannon getting destroyed like in SA2. I think it would have added to the weight of things more, and they could have had some cool cameos in there (no, I'm not letting go of my wish for a potential Jaleel White cameo; you can't make me!).
    • Speaking of SA2, loved the little nods to it throughout the movie, especially the soundtrack usage throughout!
    • My biggest gripe with the plot was why Sonic and co didn't just.... tell GUN they didn't steal the keycard. I kept expecting Commander Winters to suddenly pop back up alive and be like "They didn't steal it, I gave it to them" and Rockwell would've been like "...oh".
    • Oh yeah, did we really need to see Wade again? His scene felt pointless. The bit with the Robotniks dancing through the laser field also kinda dragged a bit (not one chuckle of laughter from my audience, either).
    • A few jokes/lines were pretty dumb ("Holy crab!") but not too surprising. "Snow my God" from the last movie was worse.
    • Gerald's death made my audience laugh a bit. Like... it was kinda brutal but also funny.
    • Bummed to see Robotnik may be dead for good, but he went out in a pretty cool way.
    • The Chao Garden scene was adorable and I want one in real life. Granted, it does suck that they're not actual creatures that exist in this universe and are fictional Sanrio/Chuck E Cheese-like mascots, but I will fly my ass to Tokyo if they put one up there for real.
So yeah, while I think this could have used a few tweaks here and there, I liked it! Best one by far, I think. May or may not go see it the theater again ($17.00 for my ticket X_X but I saw it on the Ultra screen, so...), but glad I did.

Can I say that I loved that Maria played Live and Learn on her guitar?

In Sonic 2, Walters tells us that GUN was set up in response to the events of the first movie, but in this one, they've apparently been around for 50 years?

Oh, there's a few issues like that. Continuing the Master Emerald confusion, it now contains the Chaos Emeralds again despite them flying off in the second movie and Knuckles assembling it separately from them, and Tom acts like he's never been to see Sonic's cave despite somehow getting the stuff from it for his room in the first movie.

Stuff like the cave is definitely a continuity error. But GUN having been around for over 50 years in S3 rather than being newly established was definitely done to be more true to SA2's story. I'm not going to be a huge stickler about that, and the 6 year olds this movie is actually targeting certainly don't care either.

They were setting up for Shadow's plot then as well, hence the Shadow stinger in it. They could've easily gotten around this plothole by simply not specifying the San Francisco incident as the deciding factor in their creation, just that G.U.N. was set up to protect the world from the alien threats. Then have it revealed the alien 'threat' in question was Shadow.

It was really more a way to explain why G.U.N. wasn't present for Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), since as the ones with experience with capturing and containing Shadow they'd be the first port of call for Sonic.

Well GUN never captured Shadow, they simply seized the meteorite he was encased in and kept him in the mountain laboratory. So it's possible they existed in Sonic 1 and were just ill equipped to handle an alien hedgehog that's on the loose and causing EMP shockwaves and decided Robotnik was a better choice for dealing with the situation, in which GUN would then take over on containing Sonic.

  11. I haven't watched 1 or 2 but I thought this was cute. The scenes with Maria and Shadow especially were done really well. It made me happy to see that kids still like Sonic.

I haven't seen anyone mentioned this by the way, but I think the tradegy of Maria's death hits harder when you realize that the barrel the GUN soldier shot was full of Shadow's energy and in a way he was partially responsible for Maria's death. Which probably doesn't help with his self image of being too dangerous.

GUN was present, because Walters was part of the joint chiefs of staff. In fact, Knuckles (the series) states that Robotnik used to work for GUN. I would take Walters' assertion in Sonic 2 as standard disinformation to the public, why would they reveal that they've existed in secret for 50 years?

Then a quick line of him saying "G.U.N. have been active longer than San Francisco..." would have sufficed. But then, it then begs the question of why G.U.N weren't involved in the first movie, rather than summoning Robotnik.

It's just a case of the writers making a plot ouroborus: either they were active but not deployed for Sonic for some reason, going with the unstable Robotnik, or they weren't but Shadow has a grudge for them due to random soldiers 50 years ago.

Sure, I think it's 50% the first film going out of its way to reimagine Sonic. They most probably never intended to have any resemblance to GUN or GUN Commander but the opportunity presented itself after the series took a turn away from open contempt of its subject matter.

Went and watched this again. Really glad I did- virtually all my hangups that I had on the first viewing melted away and I got to really appreciate the movie for what it is. Yeah, now I pretty firmly think that this is the best of the three movies.

It's mindboggling looking back at the lead-up to the first movie and then comparing that to now. I hope that everybody involved with this project is super proud. Fantastic sequel and a very slick and satfisfying adaptation of SA2 within this universe.

Also, a couple of random things that stood out to me on rewatch:
-Jim Carrey fucking rocked this movie. Man. If this is it for him, his performance here is one hell of a swan song
-The '06-and-onward Eggman theme playing during the Eclipse Cannon's ascent is just absolutely perfect
-I only now noticed the Eggmanland sign on the roller coaster during Ivo and Gerald's bonding montage. lmfao

It's such a brilliant way of contextualizing the song for the movie. Loved that.

  19. Definitely the best of the 3 movies, but I still don't really like them very much.
