I just like Beans and all kinds of spicy food. And I think I can make some really good stew. I'm not too crazy about the hotdog.
Can't say, but the SxS event we had here in São Paulo Brazil a lot of people have been saying it's pretty good, actually. I dunno... about the Shadow's coffee been tho', looks weird.
Yeah, in the old Sonic comics and TV shows where he'd eat Chili Dogs, it was always at some kinda roadside stand, but I don't see a lot of those where I'm from. I've never bought a chili dog. I've just put homemade chili on hot dogs. Top it with a little diced fresh onion and shredded cheddar. It's not my favorite food in the world, but I like eating them once or twice a year. If you wanna be as close to ""cannon"" as possible, the old Archie comics had a simple recipe you can probably find online, and the new Sonic Cookbook has a more complex one (which you might also be able to find online? I think they show that page in-full on Amazon) Note: I know Archie isn't/wasn't "cannon", but if you wanna eat a chili dog that looks like ones he was scarfing in AoSTH and Archie, that recipe is as Biblically Accurate as you're probably gonna get.
I don't like the chili dogs and especially how Black Knight acted like they were always a canon thing with how they can't even remember to keep them canon. Just seems like a kinda Homer Simpson-y favorite food that doesn't suit Sonic at all. It's one of those things that only makes sense in a casual, more domestic setting like AOSTH. Chili dogs work better in a canon where Sonic has an actual kitchen were he cooks tasty unhealthy dad meals like the comic there. I can't think of any reason whatsoever why canon Sonic would prefer them over anything else. They're not even particularly 90s-y. Yeah I've just never fucked with chili dogs period. Just a good hot dog or good chili by itself is so much better.
I think chili dogs are fine and make sense. It's high caloric food that can be eaten on the go, which works for Sonic when he's probably burning a ton of energy running around. So I actually like chili dogs in Sonic games. It's such a minor element anyway, we've only seen them in like 2 games now? With a couple mentions. It's not forced on to you, it's always brought up in the same way someone would say "I could go for some pizza right now". It's not like Sonic uses a chili dog wheel to drift around or glide, cough
Chili dogs appeared physically in Unleashed, Black Knight, Generations and Superstars, and were also mentioned in Forces, Frontiers and Team Sonic Racing. IIRC, there were at least 9 Achievements related to chili dogs in Unleashed.
I like how random Chili Dogs are for Sonic's favorite food. It's quirky, and I like quirky. Quirky is fun.
Grapes are healthy and definitely could grow on Angel Island. They're still random enough to be funny but technically make a lot more sense really.
The only "problem" with chili dogs is how aggressively American they are. Mint candy for tails seems pretty random too, but it's not much of a problem cause, we all have an idea what mint candy is across all cultures, or at the very least are familiar with mint flavored things. Chili however, even the name, is very American. Fast food culture revolving hot dogs and burgers are very American coded. The origins of chili dogs in the series are also exclusively American. It's not even mainstream and well known American. Hot dogs and Burgers are recognizable, but chili on hot dogs? I don't think so. So it makes sense that chili dogs might come off as forced in the mainline series. (personally I don't mind it though, Chili dogs come off as an acquired taste that I find endearing about Sonic)
I like chili dogs, but they screw up my guts really bad really fast. The fact that Sonic can wolf them down and go through all the springs, loops and rolling that he does without puking reveals his true ultimate power is his invincible stomach.
... what gave you the impression I think it made any more sense with the chili dogs than with this? Not to mention it's not even the same thing- one is "bit of information that was mentioned by the creators but forgotten until decades later creators connected to fandom brought attention to it", the other is "made up info by marketing people across the globe that became popular enough in that across the globe that a decade later it started to inform the main material" why are you making this into an argument and gotchas
If I remember right, SEGA actually tried hard, back in the 90s, to make Sonic more iconic overseas than in its home market, be it the rock-like OST or Sonic's rad attitude. So hot dogs being his favorite food despite being very american-like doesn't sit wrong to me.
Most of that was SEGA of America's idea, I believe. SEGA Japan thought Sonic was "American" enough from the get go, only to end up being unpleasantly surprised when SoA proceeded to further adjust Sonic's design.
To clarify I have no problem with chili dogs being his favorite food whatsoever, I just loathe the fact it's a very simple street food item that I can't easily get so I never tried it! I'm in love with all the Sonic recipes though. Really cute stuff
Man recipes and all that are overcomplicating it. Chili dogs can be as simple as "buy hotdogs, buns, and canned chili, put ingredients together, heat ingredients." They *can* be made fancier for sure, but given how casually they were referenced in the 90s I always took it as they were meant to be simple and cheap.
