You know I have never given much though to why I don’t like the movie design either, or at least what aspects of it I don’t like. I just know I didn’t like it.

This made me think about it a little bit. Honestly I still don’t know. But I am trying to at least nail down what the differences are.

Ignoring the obvious difference, i think movie Sonic’s eyes are too small. Just stumbled across this fan art where they appear a little larger, and I honestly kind of like that.

Movie Sonic has more “shoulder” than modern Sonic. Also, while I don’t love middle mouth in any version of Sonic, it looks especially bad here I think simply because of how wide his mouth is. And the fact that he has individual teeth

EDIT: I see that Imgur links do not work. You know what. I don’t care enough about this topic to put in effort to making that work. Fix the site.

Imgur links do work, if you pick the correct one, e.g.:

What I mean is that I don’t understand why I can’t just put in an image directly. That would be much simpler than having to go to a different website, make an account there, upload it there, and then copy and paste the “correct” link on this one.

Is that intentional design to prevent image spamming?

If an imgur image isn't working, you could try downloading the images and then uploading them directly to Sonic Retro using the "Upload a File" button.

You're really living up to your username, even though you're blaming it on the forum software. Lol. Yes it's archaic, but it's not hard to do. These are the two most straightforward options:

    To embed the images...
Copy and paste the exact URL for the images you want to post and then use the "insert image" button on the reply box toolbar. The URL needs to include the filename and extension (e.g. www.theinternet.com/sonic.png). If you can't find that, just right-click the image (or long press on mobile), open in new tab and copy the URL directly from the address bar.

To post a link to the images...
Click on the insert link button and paste the Imgur link there. That's all there is too it. The image won't be embedded into post, but anyone can click on your links to see what you wanted them to see.

So I posted my opinions on the first 20-ish archie sonic issues after reading them for the first time, i'm following this reading order so I just finished what they call 'act 2', which is issues 25-40 and I thought id give my opinions on those.

    • I hadn't been a huge fan of spaziante's art style, I think it has a very awkward quality to it, but I am starting to really like his work on the cover arts. Some of them are genuinely really good, these ones are my favorites.
      upload_2024-11-19_13-20-23.jpeg upload_2024-11-19_13-20-48.jpeg upload_2024-11-19_13-21-25.jpeg
    • It makes me a little uncomfortable when they draw Sally with realistic human anatomy. This seems to be a growing problem, there have been a few panels I' ve noticed where tails has a human neck and collar bones. This further solidifies Manak as my favorite penciler so far because he draws everyone with goofy jellybean bodies, but even he has started drawing sonic with detailed teeth and gums in some panels.
    • I really like the way manak draws Nack the Weasel, he looks a lot like this meme
      upload_2024-11-19_13-25-22.png
    • Did ken penders draw this? this looks sick as fuck though???? What the hell i thought he couldnt draw?
      upload_2024-11-19_13-27-36.jpeg
    • I've gotten to the part in the comic where Ken Penders is doing more solo writing and penciling, and tbh... it's not awful? At least so far. I mean, his art style is very uncanny and everyone has this weird dead eyed stair and the only times it's on model is when he very clearly traced stock art and every new character he makes is just knuckles' head attached to a real human body... but idk his flowery purple prose dialogue works for me, and the way he draws echidnopolis reminds me of pulpy retrofuturist aesthetic art and I think it's neat. My main complaints so far is he wrote 4 issues in a row of knuckles just walking around talking to himself and he seems obsessed with making sure sonic gets cucked.
    • Seeing dulcy show up with like a panel and a half of explanation and then cut to sonic riding a dragon is making me think i might get more out of this comic if I watched the SatAM show first.
    • I like enerjak. It's lame echidna penders BS and I was sure I was going to hate it, but I can't help it hes a cool bird mask wizard guy. I like how he mind controls the Chaotix to be his soldier slaves, but he still lets them play cards in the break room. Like, he may be an evil maniac but he still follows union regulations.
    • I really like the Combots. They remind me of Bad Company from jojo's
    • Characters are seemingly obsessed with over explaining everything, and making sure the audience knows that actually this is super logical with no plot holes. Like that panel where mecha-knuckles was explaining how he was able to beat mecha-sonic, it was just so wordy.
    • Sonic calls amy "His best pen pal"... is sonic grooming a minor??
    • I feel like a major difference between manga and american comics, at least as far as I've seen, is manga tries to make good arcs even at the expense of individual issues, and american comics try to make each issue special. Like "this is the issue where sonic turns into an evil robot" or "this is the issue where they do a fantastic voyage parody". The problem is, they try so hard to fit a whole story arc into a single issue that they speed through the set up and resolution. Like in the mecha sonic episode, the parts where he gets turned into a robot and turned back to normal felt way too fast, plot points never feel like they get a chance to breath.
    • Sally doesn't really seem to add much to the team dynamic. She's the leader, so she has to give people permission to go on missions I guess? So before sonic can do what we all actually want him to do he has to go get a hall pass from sally. It's so lame. And then, when they thought sonic had disobeyed orders (GASP! Sonic did what he wanted to even when he was told not to? Say it aint so) he was literally put on trial. Like idk, i feel like it misses the point of the characters a little to have them strictly adhering to a chain of command and taking marching orders.
Basically the comic still isn't great, but I'm liking it so far more than the first few issues

    ...That's Spaziante.

This is one of the big problems with Archie, it assumes you know the characters from SatAM sometimes and takes for granted that whatever characterization it writes them with will fit. Dulcy and especially the wolf pack are the most egregious examples. But also...

This is the other problem, that people already knowing and liking Sally meant they got away with this dynamic where you're just supposed to assume SatAM-like adventures are already kind of occurring between all the weird shit they make up, since Sally had a defined role in that show of actual intelligence and organization, even if she wasn't a fighter very often. The comics make such ludicrous use of Sonic's speed that he's overpowered and regularly does things that could take the whole team an entire SatAM episode to pull off all on his lonesome, it both deflates the tension and undercuts the freedom fighters, which is impressive because SatAM itself already did that with Antoine and Dulcy getting way too many episodes and Rotor and especially Bunnie getting almost nothing.

oh, I just saw that it had credits on the page. Idk why I just assumed penders did it. Still one of my favorite pieces of official sonic art, Spaziante is really good at action pages.

Are you recomending the SATam show? Gotta be honest, I doubt it would change my opinion of Sally as a character because i really dont like characters whose role is just 'im the leader' in action series, but if its good its good.

Antione and Dulcy? Thats messed up. Thats like telling me they made a Mario show where a majority of the episodes focus on Cheep Cheep.

I don't mean any malice with this, but how old are you? I've had other encounters like this recently that make clear the way forums, like this, work, are no longer commonly understood by younger users.

The TLDR is if this site itself were hosting files directly, they'd run of bandwidth fast. You need to upload the images elsewhere, and that's impossible to be regulated or of the responsibility of the people who have made this forum. If you're using Imgur, and it forces you to make an account etc, that's Imgur's fault, not Sonic Retro's.

I think my statement would be that both Sonic and Sally are much more active (without Sonic being overpowered) and well-characterized in SatAM, and the overall setup of the show feels more cohesive and consistent than Archie's version. I think a lot of episodes of it are pretty mediocre, but holistically it's a pretty satisfying experience, especially since it has an ending where they actually beat Robotnik. If nothing else I'd recommend the time travel 2-parter, the void episodes, anything with Chuck, and the ending.

It's not the majority, it's just that they're the ones who get spotlights that feel like they should have gone to Rotor and Bunnie (and the central gags of their characters get old fast). Sonic and Sally still get plenty, Tails gets a couple, and Rotor still gets one debatably two, along with the conflict-of-the-week episodes that aren't spotlights for anyone in particular.

The irony in all this is that Archie has a much more well-rounded portrayal of Bunnie and Antoine in the long run, just as a consequence of running long enough to print a lot of stories starring them. If I can give Penders's bland-ass characterization credit for anything, it's that when applied to Antoine, he was able to do more stuff instead of just being a liability all the time.

I love Amy's Tarot Fortune cards so much I impulse bought them the instant they were available. My unpopular opinion is that they're a fine addition to her abilities alongside her Piko-Piko Hammer. Frontiers may have gone a bit too far with the cards, but I hope SEGA won't overcorrect by completely removing them in future games. Amy played incredibly awkwardly in Sonic '06 (invisibility? really?) making me fear that SEGA had no idea what to do with her, so I have to say I'm very happy with what she can now do in Frontiers. Her Card Spin Boost skill, the way it uses both her hammer and cards, is particularly amazing.

Yeah I don't see anything wrong with them leaning into Tarot card stuff for Amy, and think the amount of Discourse™ surrounding it is fucking silly.

  14. I like it when characters are actually allowed to have interests...

As of now Amy is the only character with such a thing.

I'm completely ambivalent to the cards. They went from a footnote in a manual (and I guess Sonic Chronicles) to being a thing she brings up in real stories every once in a while. They don't detract from her character in any particular way, though I don't think they really add anything either. I do think it's really funny that some people took them being her basic attack in Frontiers as some affront to the character...or to her hammer, I guess, because like. She still uses it. Who the hell cares.

I like her having tarot cards as a thing she uses and fiddles with, that's always been cute.

What I don't like is her suddenly having magical powers. I always saw them as some quirky superstitious thing she would be into, like horoscopes, Ouija boards, etc. Introducing magical powers onto Amy's character 30 years in isn't something I really care for, since I thought her strength was being the really capable neutral character while everyone around her has some cracked-out superpower or gimmick.

If it has to be magic, though, I'd prefer if it did something that actually fit the random-card-pulling mechanic. Her being able to hover with them or drive them like a car is extremely silly lol.

I didn't even really register the card stuff as "doing magic" in the first place (yes, even with her riding the hammer like a broomstick). I mean, we just kind of glaze over the fact that magic kitsune bullshit is basically the way Tails flies, even though he's the gearhead of the group. And I guess, logically...he should sprout more tails as he ages...?
