It's far more baffling that he didn't in the first place. Especially when we already had a Sonic characterized by not talking. With how few story cutscenes there are, it meant Sonic expressed himself very little in the game, which contributed to how nothing the story is.

The most glaring example is how Vector literally foreshadows the end of the game and Sonic just. Nods. You don't have anything to say about the nature of your enemy or what that means, Sonic? Nope? Roger Craig Smith wasn't available? Okay...

Oh my Solaris, that "Take this" was so bad. I don't exactly have much positive things to say about Mephiles in general, but I just can't take him seriously with that voice. Literally copy pasting Dan Green's lines from 06 would've been a better move. Lazy, sure, but that "Take this" just makes me laugh. They did not get the right recast for him.

I haven't watched the footage, but I have heard talk of Mike Pollock performing lines for Mephiles on top of Metal Overlord and Gerald. I dunno if that's the case, but it strikes me as odd that they're not really hiring voice talent for the individual characters anymore, immediately after Frontiers brought on Rei's voice actors to voice SAGE for the US and Japanese casts. There's at least some priority in the casting selection, but it seems circumstantial...

Megumi Hayashibara is not cheap so gotta save money somehow.

But I just don't think those characters (Metal Overlord, Mephiles) are not going to show up anytime soon so I can see them not wasting time in looking for new actors.

Maria got one, and Gerald is basically just Ozempic Eggman so I guess using Mike makes sense. Especially because if I'm remembering right Chikao Ōtsuka voiced both characters as well in the JP version.

Whoever is voicing Mephiles in that clip, it's not Pollock. It might be Roger? But it doesn't sound like anyone in particular.

I'd need to hear more than one line to be sure, but I think it kinda sounds like Bryce Papenbrook. Would make sense too, since he'd be in the studio anyway recording for Silver.

I normally don't mind Roger's voice but here it sounds like he's trying to do a bad Ryan Drummond impression. Kirk sounds fine here because he's not trying to copy the tone of the original line at all, and instead gives his own original take on it.

City Escape playing in the background is the real villain of this scene

It doesn't fit the scene's tone at all, even if they've added an echo-y filter over it.

And someone in the replies posted this, it's the last frame of the clip:

    That's definitely Flynn dialogue alright.

This made me wonder for a second if this cutscene plays after you beat City Escape in SONIC Generations, but I'm not sure if that makes sense. I'm confused.

I'd imagine that it plays in the Shadow Generations half of the game, considering the models and subtitles. Idk whether it would play in Gens itself, but at this point I'm honestly rooting for the Generations dialog box to actually make it through relatively untouched, since Sonic pestering Shadow for his emerald works so well as a recontextualization.

I just think it's funny because in the other cutscene Sonic and Shadow are beating the shit of each other and then... there's this scene that just looks like the most comedic / casual thing ever, lol.

Obviously, we're lacking a lot of context here.

I'd wager been added by whoever uploaded the clip; listening on headphones, to my ear the speech and SFX sound much more tinny and lower bitrate than the music. Quite why anyone would do that is another matter entirely, but I'm fairly certain we won't be hearing this track play over this scene in-game.

  18. I like Flynn and all, but I can understand people getting sick of the references and even I have to admit, this is the most unsubtle he has been about it.

I don't know if Sega are mandating for him to do it, but I wouldn't exactly be surprised either.

Pretty sure they are. I’m pretty sure Iizuka was quoted pre Frontiers about wanting to include more world building and references to make the game feel more connected to previous ones. I’m not 100% sure on that, but I am fairly sure I read it.

Either way, it’s just like gross to me that people are dog piling him. He’s a contracted worker just doing his job, most likely mandated by SEGA and/or Sonic Team.

I think the rcontextualization of the fight between sonic and shadow may make some upset but i think its fine. I know there are some who want sonic to be some unstoppable force, and I'm not here to tell you otherwise. But I think he idea of shadow having these crazy powers and going "eh i got a plan that would be messed up to do" and not using them is a great framing of their dynamic. Shadow had things he had to do and a plan seemingly. And sonic wanted a fight and emerald. Does it kinda imply shadow is humoring him? Yes, but that's fine. It shows the difference between their characters while maintaining the original "plot" ( generations didn't have much of one ) as it exists. Everyone gets to look strong and move on. Though I have already seen people upset at the recontextulization in other places and , i don't know what to tell you. I"m sorry sonic isn't the "stongerest" or whatever

There's one critique i do think is fair, people did want a boss fight with sonic and they were very disappointment when things leaked and there was none. And I understand you having that boss fight would go against the plot of shadow having a plan and choosing not to engage in the battle fully. But I understand peoples frustration. I do think though it shows shadow's motivation in an interesting light and his potential for the future. This a trip down memory lane for shadow and it seems by and large sonic isn't important enough to be included that much. If this game does well and there are more shadow games i'm interested to see how separate shadow becomes from "sonic" the series. I think this , is the start of that.

And he like gives him a fake one and doesn't want to hurt him really with his powers. Its a better representation of their characters I think
