I'm absolutely loving the updates to the turn-based combat. The ability to reposition combined with clearer mechanics for weapon attacks, knockback, and areas of effect makes for even more engaging encounters, and the game's got nice quality of life sprinkled throughout to boot. (Shoutout to the recommended level/armor warning preceding at least one sequence; really could've used that before 7's nasty difficulty spike.) The improvements really add up to a big step forward, which is nice to see just two games into this formula.

So far my only real gripe is not being able to pick up items or aloha people while on the not-Segway, and that's not much more than a nitpick.

  2. This game is utterly amazing the combat is so good and builds on what the likes of GameArts did with Grandia 2/3. Love how it mixes in real-time and turn based and how you can also use objects close to the player
The story and cast are the real highlight of this game it's so nuts and the music is utterly incredible and the best from SEGA in decades and you can also play Model 3 Spikeout !!!

SEGA are on top form of late and the best since the old CSK deals.

This game is insanely huge and insanely good. Exploring all of the Hawaii map is an experience, but one well worth it.

Yeah apparently my Windows Firewall calls the game "Project Elvis" lol

Meh, zero desire to play it until that brawler mod is released.

When I finished 7's story I took the disc out, stuck it on my shelf and it's been gathering dust ever since.

If you haven't noticed, the combat system is much improved compared to 7. Just being able to move around is a huge gain.

  6. Yeah the battle system is so much better with the way in mixes in realtime with turn time. Its like taking the battle system in Grandia 2/3 to the next level.

It *is* better than 7, but none of that matters to me when turn-based isn't my jam.

Playing the demo after the Man Who Erased His Name was like eating a really nice steak then being served a bowl of the chef's shit for dessert.

  8. I didn't like the turn based battle system much in the last game, but in the sequel it's so much better and I like the way you can react in real-time even down to well time blocks

  9. This game is just so crazy

I love how the title and cover look crazy (I briefly thought this might be some non-canon affair, like Dead Souls meets Ishin), but it's actually another genuine entry, at least as much as Gaiden was. ("Just like Majima", I'm sure someone out there has said by now.) I do wish they had a little more than the one game (and Amazon Prime series) to tease, though. Obviously LAD9 (whatever they title it) is a ways away, but rumblings of another Judgment or some more ports of series stragglers (the PSP games especially, maybe Dead Souls) would be cool. Or maybe I've just been spoiled getting about a dozen games over half as many years catching up on PC. :V

I've recently played through the main campaign of Yakuza 8 Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and because I'm a good citizen, I've been adding things to the wiki.

As with all the Yakuza games I've played, I've laid some very basic foundations on Sega Retro in an attempt to inspire (yes there are dedicated Yakuza wikis, but Retro rules, Fandom drools, etc.). The games are waaaaay too big and involved for one man to do it all, but I can tackle the little things, such as listing the playable characters.

Yakuza 8 has all the playable characters from Yakuza 7, except for one: the optional party member Eri Kamataki. Eri feels half-finished - she doesn't appear in any of the main game cutscenes, and you can easily complete the main quest without knowing she was even playable (like I did). And then you can forget she existed (like I also did).

Why isn't she in Yakuza 8? Because Eri Kamataki is a real person.

She was the winner of a special audition, with the other four ladies in this shot also appearing the game in lesser roles. She's an actress that's done other things, but this is why she's in 7 but not 8 - it was a prize, not a job. There were 999 other candidates for her role and once the game was out, Sega stopped caring (she's in Ryu ga Gotoku Online, but I think there was overlap there?).

Yakuza often features real people so this isn't necessarily mind-blowing, but it's a titbit that isn't communicated at all in the Western releases, nor mentioned on the rival wikis. For us, Eri seems like a waste of polygons.

There will be other stories, such as one-off licensing arrangements and localisation changes, but realistically it would need someone to dig into the game's files. Documenting every item is a fool's game if you're having to physically play through and pick up everything manually (and even the official guidebooks are probably incomplete). Love to see it done though: "which games let you buy burgers??"
