    Interesting!

I'm curious about this - do we have a reference to some official communication by the company about this then? When was this recommendation issued? It seems that Sonic 2 uses "Lives", so early on I guess. It's also capitalized everywhere, as though the novelty of the word hasn't worn off yet :V

Early game manuals are fascinating things - you don't have "levels" in a lot of Sega produce either - it's all "rounds" or "stages".

Except in Sonic's case where they're "zones". But they're "zones" with "acts"... except the special "stage" which doesn't have acts even though theatre terminology and dsfjhasdfasdf

Christ in the Sonic 1 Special Stage, you want to avoid the "goal" blocks. I wonder how many people were caught out by that on their first try. And shouldn't you "exit" a stage, idk.

Last time I was doing small-timey game development I planned to bring back the MEN counter, so you could have "three MEN left". And you were also mining for chicken nuggets to stabalise your country's economy - I miss not having a job.

Except with Sonic CD where those are rounds instead of zones. And the individual levels are zones instead of acts. And let's not start with Chaotix and fucking Attractions.

Just to make things even more messy, some games used "tries" (Aladdin, for example: no small bones either, considering I believe it's the highest selling 3rd party game on the system).

I like in Mario Galaxy when they describe an extra life as "one additional Mario"

Disney games typically used "Tries" so that Mickey Mouse and the likes wouldn't be implied as "dying" I believe.

The Streets of Rage games used Players, except for the Western SoR3 which renamed the option to Lives.

According to a VGC interview with Iizuka on Shadow Generations, a Chao Garden will only happen if Sonic Adventure 3 happens.

Basically fuck you we're not getting Chao Gardens ever again.

Did the Japanese box art of Sonic 06 say "Sonic Adventure 3: Sonic the Hedgehog"? :V

heads-up to all our Sonic Retro editors: references go AFTER punctuation

If your sentence looks like this, it's wrong[1].
If your sentence looks like this, it's right.[1]

I always wondered why it's done like that, it just looks so ugly. If other people are doing it wrong it means I'm not the only one who assumed that it looks better in the other way. Note that I'm not advocating to change the system, I gave up on such things a long time ago.

funny, I've always thought the opposite. seeing a reference wedged between a word and a period has always made me squeamish. but I've mostly seen it on smaller Wikias (and Japanese Wikipedia, worryingly) and there's associations there. what was more surprising is that this applies to ALL punctuation. including commas!! meaning....

If your sentence looks like this[1], it's wrong.
If your sentence looks like this,[1] it's right.

NOW THIS is what looks ugly to me. i checked all the big style guides, and.... yeah, this is indeed how you do it. *shrugs* anyway with Sega/Sonic Retro being renowned for our feverish dedication to citations, we autta make sure we're entering all those citations correctly. thanks for your time folks!

    psst

I've always done it this way. Wikipedia does it the other way, and I imagine most wikis copy them, but I think it looks messy, especially after commas. There doesn't seem to be any universal standard In academia, and there are UK/US divides and bleh.

It's a similar situation to "color" and "colour" - as long as we don't keep swapping between the two on a page, either is fine. But Sega Retro will be skewed towards British English because historically a lot of the active members have been from Britain-land (including me!).

Yes, this doesn't seem to be clear-cut at all: not only do opinions wildly differ, but some publishers actually do demand that the citations be placed before punctuation. This is acknowledged by at least one institution: "Reference numbers are generally placed outside or after full stops and commas - however, check with your faculty/journal publisher to determine their preference." That's the thing about cultures: they vary.
