Hey you're closer to the subject than I am so I'll take your word on everything.

The only other example I could find of a studio doing all it's marketing, from new promotional art to trailer, a few months out from release (Mission Impossible 7) was Paramount.

If this has become normal for them that's cool. I just didn't realize it when no other studio acts in this way (Marvel and DC withstanding) and people said it was for movies in general, not just Paramount films.

    Thanks for the information.

5 or 6 months isn't uncommon for a first teaser trailer but ~4 months is the golden window for a first trailer. Animated movies are exceptions because they start making trailers as soon as their assets are ready which is usually much sooner because they don't have to wait for a film shoot to finish and finalize things. Also worth considering if a movie has had extensive reshoots or has just been sitting in the can waiting for a release date like Kraven. Every movie is different but 4 months is not uncommon. Hell, Alien Romulus had a teaser 5 months ago but didn't get a first real trailer until 2 months ago and it released last week.

So basically the trailer can drop any point between today and October 20th or so. That's a pretty wide range. Just have to hope it's sooner rather than later, because at this rate we'll have enough toys that released too early to essentially reconstruct the movie's plot before it drops. :V

It's best to use the specific distributor's own release data rather than pollute it with the marketing strategies that other studios use. There is no industry standard on when a trailer should be released and there's no real pattern you can use either. Film production can have wrenches thrown at them, and it's not always the film itself that's the root cause. The pandemic, strikes, corporate buyout and massive layoffs can have a domino effect on things.

You guys just need to be patient.

This happens all the time. A lot of Disney movies have their plots spelled out in children's books.

I mean, the highest grossing movies in the box office right now are all Disney movies, and almost all of them are record breaking in success. Inside Out 2 is the highest grossing animated movie, Deadpool & Wolverine is the highest grossing R-rated movie, Alien Romulus is doing quite well, etc. Mufasa is also a a sequel to the former highest grossing animated movie, The Lion King remake.

I’d say Paramount would be just as foolish to release Sonic next to Mufasa as SEGA were to release Superstars next to Mario Wonder.

    Paramount picked the date first.

True, but that’s not really my point. Just that Mufasa should not be perceived as anything other than a threat to the potential box office for this movie, there’s no way at bare minimum it doesn’t out-gross Sonic.

Should movies just not release on the same date as other Disney movies then? Because they pretty much have all the records.

December is a good month for film and exhibition. Unless your only objective is to be #1, it isn't a good enough reason to delay your film.

Again, not really my point. I was retorting to the poster who was claiming that Disney were in a downward slump, which is far from the truth atm

I'm not addressing that. I know they're wrong. I see the numbers every week.

I'm addressing the specific claims that Paramount should move over just because of Mufasa. There is no reason for them to shift. There will be plenty of screens come December. Exhibition cleans house mid December of any old lower performing films in order to accommodate what's pretty much their Super Bowl week.

The French in that poster reads: "The precise death of Maria's screen". Or was that part of the joke? :)

Sonic and Mufasa are competing for the same family audience. It's very rare to see two movies aimed at the same demographic come out the same day, especially two tentpole films.

Also movies will claim a release date then move if something bigger is coming al the time. The Wild Robot had September 2024 claimed for a long time then moved when Paramount's Transformers One decided it wanted to release on the same day. They didn't want their animated robot movie competing with Transformers.

It was just a theory, I didn't expect anyone to take me saying that as saying they're definitively moving it or want to avoid Mufasa.

No it's just that this is a relatively lazy shitpost made in 15 minutes so I just went with the first thing Google Translate spat out.

  20. As far as Mufasa goes, people will go see it because it's Disney, but nobody asked for a rando prequel about dead lion dad. They'll get their obligatory billions from families taking kids to see it, but Sonic 3 will do just fine. Probably better than the last two since it'll be coming out when everyone's out of school.
