I’m still in awe of how good HE2 looks when it isn’t being dragged down by dogshit art direction. It’s also initially surprising that the Switch version will be 60FPS, but makes a lot of sense when considering that White Space is almost certainly much less demanding than any of the Starfall Islands.

I will admit to trepidation over the level design though. We’ve still not seen a whole lot yet but it all looks pretty linear. I’m still hankering for a return to Generations’ level design philosophy, and ironically I’ve been given no reason to think Shadow Generations will have that yet.

Consider that the gameplay from Sonic Generations looks pretty much the same, despite that game *definitely* having better level design than was in the trailer.

I think SEGA just sucks at capturing interesting gameplay footage. We'll find out tomorrow.

Isn't that what people thought was Westopolis? The road looks a great deal more like Radical Highway to me.

  7. The area is definitely Radical Highway, but I don't think it's an actual level. From what I can tell from all the trailer footage, it's an elaborate boss level against Doom's Eye. Which means there's probably only three traditional stages, not counting the Deluxe Edition extra.

Also, watching those buildings clip into each other makes me cringe.

Source? Please don't post news without a source.

This looks like the wall-scrolls that were available through the ebten.jp exclusive versions of Colours Ultimate, Frontiers and Superstars. I imported those, and would import this too if SEGA are doing it again.

Yeah, they really weren't made to viewed for any more than the splitsecond it takes for them to appear on and then disappear from the screen, goes from looking like a psychadelic kaleidoscope to a goofy funhouse.

I really wish we'd get more information on what makes the Generations side of this a "Remaster".

    So far we have...

Touched up cutscenes. They got chao now! WOW!

    Chao collectibles.

    Drop dash.

And possibly an updated museum and the scrapping of the codes to unlock those statues...

I mean... Okay but... that's kind of pathetic isn't it? Like... What exactly sets it apart from the current Generations we have now?

if I had to nitpick, there are some shots that look a bit goofy which is just a result of the models they're still using.

The stiff and stilted posing and expressions remind me of like a Source Filmmaker fan animation. I'm not expecting them to update the models for this game since they need to keep it analogous with Generations, but hopefully for the next big game they just go all-in and really rework the character models so they can really push the expressions. They just look a bit constipated to me idk.

The majority of remasters that aren't complete disasters are similar; just touched up versions of the original. Usually, there's a greater generation difference, so even basic improvements are more noticeable. But there's not much you can do to improve on Generations, since it's not like it was an outdated or ugly game to begin with, without putting that effort towards just making a new game, which is what they did. That's why people were wary about a remaster (besides the possibility of it being worse than the original).

By simply being identical+ to the original, that already makes this remaster above-average. Not just for Sonic but for other remasters in the industry.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury was virtually identical to the original besides minor changes like some elements from Odyssey (like the dive) and a faster running speed. And Bowser's Fury doesn't even get much improvement since the Switch isn't that much more powerful than the Wii U. So that's something this release has over it.

Anyway, I noticed that Shadow doesn't do the Chaos Snap when he's Homing Attacking objects instead of enemies. I wonder if that means he has a combo string. All of the enemies so far go down in one hit, so maybe that's saved for bosses.

The fact you can play it on modern platforms

The PC version is a pain to configure and you basically need mods for it to run on a modern computer, it's not playable on current PlayStation (streaming doesn't count) or Nintendo consoles, and the emulated Xbox 360 version on Xbox Series X/S has annoying emulation bugs like the zip line shortcut in Chemical Plant Act 2 being broken, the Sonic 1 emulator not working, and random crashes.

I would guess Sega figured that an updated Generations and a Shadow game wouldn't sell on their own, so they combined them in a single release a la Bowser's Fury.

Besides that the PC version also has a lot of issues that the console versions didn't. Quite a few of them are minor but some of them were pretty noticeable though like how walljumping completely breaks or how it can crash a lot sometimes. It doesn't for me anymore, but on my old PC that Rouge mission where she flirts with the Egg Pawns used to CTD constantly.

I also have no clue if this problem was in the console versions but the lightspeed dash also seemed very unreliable in 3D like in CPZ act 2. Never really seen anyone bring that up.

I never knew the PC port of Generations had so many problems. My only problem is that my controller sometimes wouldn't work.

Oh my god how could I forget the controller desync bug on the PC version, that one makes me want to rip my hair out
