Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

Bro it isn't the year 2000 anymore. The amount of configuration you have to do on a majority of PC games these days are almost non-existent. Most of them have auto detection tools to do it for you. The ones you have to actually fiddle with these days are usually notoriously bad ports that would give anyone problems even on beefier rigs. Sonic Superstars is not one of those ports.

I'm not saying don't get a PS5 if that's ultimately how you want to play it, but stop making it sound like you're trying to climb a damn mountain if you choose to run it on your potato.

PC gaming is great but promoting PC gaming via piracy is pretty amusing. Do you want any other stolen products alongside that?

 

And usually all those games with "notoriously bad ports" are games people really wanna play, like Red Dead Redemption 2, Deathloop, Last of Us Part 1, and many others.

Either I'm being sold on the ability to play Superstars at all or I'm being sold on the ability to play other games in addition to it. And that second one is kind of dumb to me because I'd get to play the games I really want to play on launch (like GTA 6) later than launch and with probably not very good PC launch experiences.

Last thing to say specially about PC, just wanted to update on how I was feeling about not buying the game originally and the reason why.

 

Any use of the the Steamboat Willie characters would necessitate that there's absolutely zero possible ambiguity about the fact that Disney aren't involved. It would be an absolute legal minefield for almost any major company, no less one such as SEGA that has official Disney products to its name. Plus there's a recent Mickey Mouse game that uses designs that aren't entirely dissimilar to the original 1920s characters. There's no way SEGA would get away with it.

And this is all discounting the fact that they wouldn't want to do it either. I doubt that any major brand would want to distract from their own established IPs to instead essentially cosplay as Disney, making corporate enemies across the board in the process. For the foreseeable and possibly forever, the copyright expiration is only going to make the property available to small-time indies who can't make a buck. Mickey Mouse isn't public domain. Only Steamboat Willie and it's collective materials are.

So in theory, yes, it could happen. But will it or anything similar ever happen? Absolutely not.

 

Legally they would be completely in the right but god imagine how angry the mouse would get LMAO

Edit: I’m thinking perhaps the intention was to make her look closer to a Chinese dragon.

 

It sucks that there are design elements of Trip’s super form that could’ve really worked if they hadn’t gone for a that stupid quadrupedal dragon instead of something more traditional. What we’ve got just looks dopey and like it’s from the SatAM cartoon.

 

She looks super fucked up in that Ohshima art (sorry ohshima) but I think she's a pretty adorable design overall. I adore how unique it is compared to, well, pretty much any other super/powered up form in the series. I want to cuddle a plush of her lol

 

I mean, she is a terrifying dragon after all...

Disney would be able to easily go after them because SEGA has sold Disney games in the past, hell, right now because you can buy the Castle of Illusion remake on Steam with SEGAs name proudly on the front screen.

It won't be hard at all to say it looks like they're trying to sell this as an official crossover when SEGA and Disney have had a long history of making games together.

Also being real even if they WERE legally in the right there's nothing stopping Disney from blacklisting working with them ever again out of principle. I doubt they'd want to never work with Disney again for a skin that won't sell any additional copies of the game.

 

I would respect Dulcy if I were you.



Her design is far less weird-looking than Super Trip. Everything about it fits, including her role within the dragon community she lost! She's not just some dragon. She's a protector.

Super Trip has none of that and just looks like that dragon from How to Train Your Dragon, where I'd be willing to bet they drew inspiration from.

 

No actually, Dulcy is bad.

 

Dulcy's design always looked out of place and Dragon Tales-y to me even in SATAM honestly. I think It's just hard to get a more traditional cartoon quadruped character design to look right in the big-gloves-rubberhose-mascot-shonen-fusion artstyle Sonic characters have always been made in. Toothless knockoff Super Trip at least looks a bit more comfortable in the Superstars artstyle, even if she is still kinda jarring. I had been wondering if that form was inspired by Dulcy, or was maybe even some kind of use of that Doomsday dragon concept from proto-3&K.

Also I have to say I hatehatehate Dulcy's nosering. It just busies and elongates the fuck out of her already busy and over-elongated face.

 

I literally only noticed she's a SatAM chraracter because you guys told so, lol.

I think I still might prefer this to them just copping out and making her look like Vector in the later Archie comics though lol.

 

Disney still hold a trademark on Mickey, so you can't just start putting the Mickey the Mouse character in stuff without risking a big old lawsuit from Disney. You'd have to make it clear that the skin is in no way a Disney product. I think this would be risky terriatory, especially since Disney DO make video games so could argue there is potential brand confusion.

 

yeah after learning more and thinking about it realistically, I don't think SEGA (or any studio tbh) would ever be ballsy enough to do something like this and risk ruining their relationship with Disney lol.

I know he's not a Disney character but there's a burger joint in my city that uses Felix the Cat as their mascot and the whole interior is decorated with his face, which is pretty cool.

 

I was caught off guard by Trip's super form and I kind of hate it. It's not a terrible character design, it just doesn't fit and looks really weird. I don't think any other character has a super form that changes their actual body shape/structure. The closest I can think of is Chaos transforming as he acquires more emeralds, but that's not the same thing.

Also Dulcy is one of the worst things to happen to SatAM.
