Watching that new trailer and hearing the lines I read from the leaked script took me out lol

It's the realization of wow, Sega really did left in the whole story in the 2nd update. Though, it's cool to hear them with proper context and line delivery.

Really love how they're keeping The End looming in the background of all these shots. Makes me wonder if they're doing that in-game.

The art is very nice. The contents of the trailer were nothing new to me, but it was exciting to finally see what they've been cooking up in an OFFICIAL capacity.

It also occurs to me that most people still don't really know what this is meant to be. A lot of people I'm familiar with still think it's a separate campaign, while all (datamined) evidence points to it being a rewrite of the ending. Very strange that they haven't cleared that up.

I can't imagine a world where that's true or would even be practical for them. If there were just randomly 2D storyboarded cutscenes in there it would be extremely jarring

 

Originally I hoped The End would be approaching earth as the moon did in Majora's mask. Fingers crossed they do it with this update.

 

Will I need to have beat the game to play as Tails, Knuckles etc? I'm stuck on the last island yet.

I know it's been almost a year but I haven't had time and I'm bad at games...

 

Considering random 2D cutscenes already happened in the base game, I can easily imagine a world where it's true.

 

Screenshots from existing games used to call back to those games in the middle of in-game cutscenes is significantly different from the in-game cutscenes themselves being replaced by still images in a new but obviously different art style.

That's like saying because there are conversations that aren't voice acted in the base game that there will be no voice acting whatsoever.

 

The Steam Page mentions that it takes place before the final battle so you probably need to go as far as that. I'd recommend just playing on easy, upgrading as much as you can, using the more powerful moves, and taking advantage of the unlimited parry time. If you want to not actually engage with the open zone stuff and rush to the end, you can do Big's Fishing mini-game and get everything (that's what I did on my first playthrough because I didn't feel like searching for memory tokens on the final island, lol). Highly recommend doing it on Ouroboros since you get such a massive payout for fishing.

The base game's final boss is very simple, though you do need to get hit by his attack at the end to actually finish the fight for some reason.

 

I hope they have this as an extra mode and don't make you replay the game to get to it.

 

Given its an explicit rewrite of the ending, I'd imagine it takes place at the final save point before Supreme.

Ooo looks like Tails has got some kind of arm cannon? SA1/2 fusion gameplay confirmed

 

Honestly I’d love Tails to have Gamma styled gameplay in the future but I just don’t see any satisfying way that could work in Frontiers.

 

I can't belive Tails got a weapon before Shadow could get a one again.

 

I don't think they would have to make more than like 5 new cutscenes that aren't basic talk cycles. That should be a simple task for about a year's worth of work + new hires you wanna get accustomed to the job.
Hoping I can actually enjoy the update when it releases. I'm long past the wonder phase for the game and know its story, mechanics and world very well so I'm not sure how I'd like to approach the update.

 

Shadow himself is the weapon to be fair

 

New trailer doesn't show much new (though it does provide much needed context). I haven't read or seen any of the leaks from the previous updates so most of my expectations is what I expect from Sonic Team. The description mentions finding Chaos Emeralds, do we know where the old game content "cuts off" and the new revised third act begins? Are they just entirely wiping how the last island progresses and replacing it with the new story? (I'd love this because the last Island is so dull) but I also am not expecting the world.

Based on datamining the current version of the game, the new content begins after Sonic dies on Rhea Island (this is where the game internally moves on to Ouranos). From what it appears, the general layout and appearance of Ouranos will stay the same, but it'll presumably be a fully-fledged island, with a first encounter and story content and all that. The Japanese trailer also specifies "New Challenges on Ouranos Island".

It's currently unknown how they plan to handle this for completed save files, or saves already on Ouranos.
