Sonic Superstars: A New 2D Sonic Game (Fall 2023)

The idea of Trip being Honey the Cat sounds awesome to me.

 

She is now canon.

 

If you include his shirt color, the only NES-era Mario game whose box art actually matches his in-game palette is the super form on black box Mario 1 (since that was the point of black box art in the first place).

I was initially going to joke "you mean his BLUE overalls, right?" but I'd argue it's even less consistent than that!

 

Plot-twist: Trip is introduction of Classic Sticks in the franchise.

 

When asked why Fang has been brought back, Iizuka said they wanted to "bring back some nostalgic characters". Maybe Fang won't be the only obscure face returning?

I'd love for them to just go ham and include a ton of characters, I don't even care if that takes the form of paid DLC character packs.

 

Does Fang no longer have any form of gun? That'd be depressing.

 

I noticed that the official site's renders, despite being png files, seem to have a gif file effect.

 

Trip is definitely something like a horned lizard or some form of reptile, her tail and the spikes on her armor are reminiscent of a few different types of lizards. If she's playable, I hope she'll have a neat new ability like Mighty and Ray did.

Fang has clearly lost his guns, which likely ties back into why he was abandoned for so many years in the first place. At least they were acknowledged in Mania.

It is what it is. At least everything else about him is faithfully recreated. And I guess weasel can now be an derogatory nickname for his behavior, rather than his species. Which tracks.

 

I've always liked Bark, but I honestly think he's a bit too tall for a classic-style Sonic game. Now a spinoff of any sort? Absolutely bring him back for those.

 

Target has the release date listed as October 17th. May be changing but posting for the record.

 

Speaking of bringing back classic characters, why not classic Espio? His original incarnation the only character in the original Sonic the Fighters that hasn't even appeared as a cameo in any Sonic game.

I remember very clearly someone reporting you could see Espio in the background of Studiopolis Act 2 back when Mania wasn't released and that wasn't true.

I want him back.

 

Releasing in October is so bold that I kind of want it to happen. I have full faith Superstars will sell well in that crowded market.

Frontiers had a poor initial reaction, a 71 Metacritic, and sold at $60 and it became one of the best and fastest selling Sonic games in a long time. Superstars is riding off of that game and likely review better so while I think that being a 2.5D game would have less appeal than Frontiers, I'd be shocked if it does less than 1.5 million in a month.

 

Yes, Sega please go ham with character dlc. I would pay a LOT to play co-op as the classic chatoix or freedom fighters. (Tbc I don’t think the ff are likely. I would view their inclusion as going ham)

If superstars sells super well it’s good for everyone. It increase the odds for dlc, more sonic games developed by Ohshima and heck just more 2D Sonic with good physics (which Headcanon could help deliver)

 

Since Jun Senoue is composing for Superstars, then I call dib of this theme being reused for Fang (or at least some other cut-scenes involving the villians):


Everyone here knows that if he can reuse music or melodies from Sonic 3 and Sonic 3D Blast for Sonic Adventure and Sonic 4, he damn well can do it again for Superstars.

Both sad and true. I wouldn't want to meet any of these people in real life.

 

Personally, although it's a good theme, I wouldn't want it being reused because of the very selfish reason that this theme now sounds weird to me without the reversed Stardust Speedway melody right after. Triple Trouble 16-bit got me good there.

 

You do, all the time. People can act like normal adults in real life, and then become petulant children on the internet.

 

Heck, that person has amazing refined versions of the "original" S3K themes...
Why couldn't the ones in Origins be on this level of quality? :'(

The Amy render has come up already, but I think people are sleeping on these! It's hard to describe how satisfying it is to look at these characters and not feel like there's something off about them.
