Gameplay footage looks fantastic! The usage of screen space looks great (I dislike how the modern games zoom out so much, makes the scale feel way off). I don't know.. But I'm really excited for this now! This is easily the most promise a Sonic game has had on announcement since Mania.

And we got Fang and a new unnamed villain designed by Oshima the goofball behind the origin of the series early aesthetics. The goofball who directed Sonic CD?? This might be the (fresh!) classic sonic game we should've gotten but never did. I'm so excited now, this is looking to be a stellar year for 2D platformers

Guys, can we have one singular release that we just let people be excited?

This clearly stomps all over Sonic 4. And is that jelly Sonic an emerald power? I've wanted individual emerald powers forever and I 100% approve of this example as an alternate but seemingly optional way to maneuver. Nice to see they're playing with depth in ways I don't think we've seen since Palmtree Panic despite it making the package look even more strikingly 2010. Ironically though it looked like there was a little jank with both loops stopping the player there but the level geometry probably isn't finished.

This first round of gameplay footage has completely and utterly shattered any skepticism I had.

This looks like everything I wanted in a follow-up to Sonic Mania. A BRAND NEW 2D Sonic game that introduces new gameplay mechanics and follows different paths than everything previously. And it looks incredible.

I am completely on board with this now. Please Sega feed us more

Honestly the Emerald Power idea sounds like something lifted out of a fangame but I really like the implementation so far.

This is the most united I've seen classic Sonic fans since Mania, TBH. There'll always be a percentage of healthy skepticism/negativity thanks to SEGA/Sonic Team's history with us. And we're all also different individuals with different tastes/interests from what we enjoy about the franchise.

Weirdly, footage from people who are wank at playing Sonic gives you a better indication of how on point the physics are. They seem to be much better than I thought!

What happened at 0:59? Sonic suddenly lost all his speed in that looping.

Also Fang/Nack now has 5 fingers instead of 4. Character ruined 0/10 :colbert:

It looks like they jumped in the middle of the loop

  11. This kinda reminds me of the boss from Christian Whitehead's old Retro Sonic demo.

They seem to jump both times a loop halts them. The second is less obvious, looks like they jumped while climbing the right side and then bonked their head. Arguably the angle they hit the top of the loop at could have actually had them reattach to the celling, but still, looks okay.

Also the new character is clearly an animal with some sort of robot costume

this looks really creative and I like that there are multiple ways to beat this guy. I never thought Sonic Team had it in them to make something like this again. I don't know who is directing this game, but they definitely need to stick around.

Overall I'm really impressed with what I've seen of this game so far! Also that 2D animated intro looks great, major props to powerhouse studio (I assume)
I'm loving this character design. Naoto Ohshima still has the juice

Excellent, scoring is still a part of the game as indicated by the badnik values. With no life counter meaning that the only purpose of score is competition, this might finally be the classic Sonic that keeps individual stage scores that I've been waiting for. This looks fantastic.

  17. Fr, someone tell me / find out what TVs those demos are running on they look outstanding.

Gameplay has relieved some worries. Thank god we didn't have to wait months for this and the speculation to grow rampant.

Now, so long as Jun Senoue isn't involved in making a soundtrack, I personally would be happy.

What a delightful surprise, hopefully we see some direct feed gameplay as well soon.

No, it makes perfect sense. Of course they do. It's not how Sonic behaves when you're doing what the game wanted from you that will tell you how good it is, but hw he behaves when you're struggling to do so. That's when you see the limits of the engine and what discretionary space the game offers for emergent play, as well as how much possible it is to create -- not learn, exactly -- your own gameplay style.

I don’t even mind if Jun does music as long as he never finds out it’s for a classic sonic project; trying to make Genesis Music on purpose is where he drops the ball

that said I assume we’d have heard some comments on the music if it were bad; we just can’t hear it over the crowds like the people there might be able to

unless these demo tvs are muted? Don’t know how that’s usually handled here
