Sonic Origins Collection - General Thread

    Absolutely not, that's consistent with every other life icon from Sonic 1 to Sonic & Knuckles.

    The borders don't bother me as that's how the classic life icons are - the spacing between the letters being off is what gets me. They should be spaced the same as "SONIC" as it's the same letters rearranged, but the spacing around the "I" is bigger in the "COINS" version, resulting in the text awkwardly butting up against the edge of the icon. Bothers me to no end.

    I think it may be because the coin takes up so much of the white space compared to life icons and even looks a bit cut off at the top that's making the black bars stand out so much. I'd probably edit the white to be dark like most item box icons.

    I guess my attention was never drawn there until it was changed. Still, it's slightly mind-blowing to realise this after 25 years of playing and I hate it lol. You've ruined the games for me and I'm no longer a Sonic fan :colbert:

    I will give the character select menu this: it is instantaneous. One of my bigger gripes about the mobile versions is how damn long they take to actually get from the menus into the games. At least the decompilations are speedier.

    I'll also give them the fact that if they did have general purpose rather than character-specific save slots that I'd use them in approximately the same way (one of the reasons I want more save slots for Sonic 3).

    What I really want is the return of the stage select menus from Sonic 1 and 2, and they don't have to redo the save selection to enable that.

    Are concepts, ideas, and general wishful things allowed in this thread? Just wanted to show how it'd look if they gave Tails turning frames for his flight like Knuckles has. Could've been a nice add to Origins.

    I'd love to see the speculated S1/S2/Mania sprite swapping intended for S3&K's remaster. Though considering the amount of sprite work it's already taken to put Amy and Knuckles across all games, I'm not sure if it still would've been prioritised, or if it maybe would've been made another feature of the paid Plus DLC. Though that's only involved new characters and modes based on Mania/Origins precedent, and other merely aesthetic-changing cheat codes intended from the start were of course free, so probably not. But it'd still be a bunch of gaps to fill for new sprites, especially if Mania sprites retained their fluidity or if they wanted to do it for all 4 games, when rushed base Origins infamously accidentally used some S3 Complete sprites for Super Sonic it had as reference and they didn't initially respond to it, if that's worth mentioning.

    I think as a matter of course, if you're upgrading the graphics, every sprite should get turning animations. Otherwise Sonic and Tails start looking really smooth, but Eggman is still instantly flipping from left to right.

    Mind you, the more additions you make, the less it feels like a Mega Drive game. The extra Super Sonic animations have been proven to work in Sonic 3 Complete, but whether there'd be enough VRAM to handle turning bosses, I wouldn't want to say.

    Otherwise, I'll just buy it at a discount.

    I just watched the original Origins launch trailer and Origins Plus announcement trailer back to back and aside from the few seconds of Amy gameplay and the Game Gear games, all the other gameplay footage used is EXACTLY the same in both trailers.

    You would think that if the product is this late into development they would have shown off more Plus related gameplay but I guess not.

    The likely scenario here is that SEGA was just being lazy and reused stock footage.. but is there even a slight chance this was intentional to hide any other Plus related features that haven’t been revealed yet?

    I mean they barely acknowledged Knuckles' addition to SCD in the trailer, him just being part of the Plus DLC mentioned at the end, not even overtly stated as such. We currently only have a gameplay screenshot from the Japanese Sonic Twitter, so they're at the very least being careful showing content we already know we're going to get with Plus.

    Headcannon did mention they were allowed to add a few updates and enhancements to the collection, whether that's small like fixing the Drop Dash and polishing things or more cheat-y options across the games. Like the free patch additions Mania got with its Plus update, it might not really be something to advertise about. I also wonder if more Missions with Amy/Knuckles and Museum content would be natural extensions of the new playable characters, or if that would've been mentioned so far like the bonus hard missions of the previous Origins DLC. Though getting surprised with a couple new animations (like the leaked survey said, not that I expect new co-op modes) for either all alternate characters in SCD or Knuckles' S3&K campaign would be great to see.

    And seeing as everyone's now playable everywhere, they might as well make Story Mode an option for all characters, even if there's not necessarily always going to be new Origins cutscenes for all characters in all games, though that's half the point of it I guess. SCD's opening and ending can still sorta work for Amy, S2's opening for Tails while the ending is non-descript enough to work for anyone, and that's also kinda the case for S3&K's opening and ending, minus of course Knuckles. And the Story Mode ending naturally also works for everyone as well.

    I also dig that all the sprites, including his idle/standing, have his updated 3K head.
    I think it’s possible, there are a few easter eggs/minor updated we haven’t been told about. I’m not getting my hopes up but it’s possible. That said, I think the decision to re-use footage is unrelated.

    I'm hopeful there is more planned, though I get the feeling Amy and the 8 bit games are more or less the big centerpiece, meaning other additions are likely more minor unless they have a big surprise planned.

    Really though, if emulated games are on the table now, I'd have loved if they had dug a bit deeper. Even besides hard to emulate titles like SEGASonic arcade and Knuckles Chaotix, there's plenty obscure Sonic games that could do with being recognised.

    Everyone's line for what's doing too much is different and arbitrary, but I don't think most people will scoff at a few extra frames here and there. Many enemies in the game rotate already and I think it'd be great if at least the bosses had rotating frames when necessary.

    Sonic team were upping the ante on the 3D effects with every title so I believe the anniversary mode should loosen restrictions to really let the classic sprites shine. Those pressed about the game not feeling classic enough can play Classic Mode.

    Like the Sega CD and 32X, even this Mega Drive obscurity had its own Sonic thing, sorta. If it weren't branded with a non-Sonic identity, it'd be another Mega Drive spin-off they'd be obliged to include if they went that route with Origins (see also: Wacky Worlds Creativity Studio, but not Sonic Eraser).

    SEGA JP twitter posted a tweet yesterday showing a gif of Sonic & Amy at the start of Collision Chaos Act1. Now the reason for the tweet is irrelevant, however, what caught my eye is that the gif is showing Sonic CD in widescreen but with the finite lives system and not COINS. So I wonder if this is a gif from Origins Plus and that the finite lives system has been added back (is now an option)???

    I mean it's probably just a gif from the mobile or PS3/X360 version of CD, but you never know...
