Weird question. Anyone else hear Spinel from Steven Universe when reading Surge lines? IDK why I've decided that's what she sounds like, but I guess it is.

 

Eh, I get FLCL Haruko, which isn't really that different. I guess "voice that could be cutesy but is instead shouty and unhinged" is kind of an archetype.

 

No, I actually hear Fink from SU's sister series OK KO when reading Surge.

 

Personally, I hear something close to Caulifla/Kefla from Dragon Ball Super. With Kit, I feel like Cassandra Lee Moris would do a good job.

 

Latest issues are super good, and Scrapnik Island is way better than i ever expected, that is all.

Next Month issue should be hype

I hear her as a more feminine Envy from FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

 

I think for me it's to do with all the rage she has for someone who she "hasn't even met", those deeply personal problems that turn into lashing out at someone who is only a small part of the bigger picture.

 

She's also brash and belligerent too.

So it turns out Nite and Don are a couple. Currently assuming this was only specified in internal documents because I’m surprised I didn’t know about this already otherwise.

 

They certainly weren't written like a couple in their first appearance but I'm not gonna complain.

 

I'm all for making things gayer, and I like Don's punk design, but this was as much a reminder that these guys even exist as it was a reveal of any kind of representation. I hope it'll be a trait of characters who left a stronger impression on me than these ones did. Tangle and Whisper, make it happen!

I mean, a lot of gay representation in children's media is just "these two background characters who show up for a single scene/single page/a few minutes at most are actually gay, guys!!!". So it's in line with other franchises, at least. Although ships in general don't matter much for me, I'm glad people are happy there's... some rep now?

 

I literally don’t remember these two characters, like even after glancing at their wiki pages I still cannot for the life of me remember what role they actually have in the story

To be fair they debuted in the 2020(?) annual, which was a nice little story about how they were able to help coordinate folks during the Metal Virus. Since then, their only other appearance has been in the main book around the time of Zeti Hunt when they were taking care of Charmy off panel and I think have the Chaotix a lead for the case they were working? I think I’m going to have to do some rereading, my mind is a bit foggy on things.

 

Meh, I'd rather Surge just be her own thing. I know we're joking around, but I feel like such a move would really undercut the identity of the character and the IDW universe by extension.

Honestly I'm pretty surprised this is a thing and has been since the pitch - I always interpreted Nite as being much older than Don, but maybe that's just due to their species and builds.

 

I mean obviously I wouldn't literally make her the same person as Scourge, but I've known enough trans women who love Vriska Homestuck to know that "emotionally-fucked dumpster gremlin" is a popular archetype for such an audience.

Personally I'm not much of a LGBT headcanoner, though. I tend to latch onto something more when it has even a vague basis in one canon or another. So, Rouge and Amy getting sorta-kinda girlfriends in X and StC? Yeah sure make em' bi. Sonic and Knuckles making bedroom eyes at each other in Frontiers? Sure, ship it. Sallicole and Whispangle? Love it.

(Okay, I went for Silver as bi, but that's definitely my teenage self projecting because he's an awkward nice nerd boy)

Amy and Tekno have a kid that Sonic's the godfather of, straight from Nigel Kitching, in the last story he decided to write for Sonic the Comic (albeit Sonic the Comic Online!, but since he was the main writer for the comic for the majority of it's run...)

I'm starting to get so tired of LGBTQ+ getting into every corner of the stuff I like and enjoy.
I understand they want to feel included and represented as far and wide as possible, but...
It was almost from 08 to 80 in a very short time, to me. I can't simply adjust that quickly...
