Recently Zeck informed me that he recently met someone who worked for a SEGA Magazine (not an official one), and they claimed to have a prerelease cart. Now of course, I didn't believe a word of it, but none the less, as he now has a working rom dumper (which I've seen pictures of), he got the cart and dumped it.

Unfortunatly it appears to simply be Sonic 1 REV 00. However under closer inspection with File Compare:

    Code (Text):
    1. C:\>fc /b "Sonic The Hedgehog (W) (REV00) [!].bin" "Sonic_The_Hedgehog_678.bin"
    2. Comparing files Sonic The Hedgehog (W) (REV00) [!].bin and SONIC_THE_HEDGEHOG_678.BIN
    3. 00002613: 8E AE
    4.
    5. C:\>
Now you're probably all thinking he just opened up a Hex editor and changed a byte, but still I thought it was worth posting, just in case anyone else has a Sonic 1 cart with "AE" at $2613.

Here's a picture of the cart:

Apparently it has the word "review" written on it.

    And here's the dump.

'not for resale' != 'review copy'

also, it's impossible. 1 byte difference would change the checksum. and the checksum is unchanged. bullshit, my friend. try [getting your cock] harder :P

$2613 is in the SBZ pallet (and AE is a valid pallet value). A change of 1 byte would make the checksum wrong, so maybe the cartridge is faulty.

Wrong checksum => the security (on MD>2) or checksum control code (MD1) rejecting the cart => red screen

Did he dump it more than once to make sure he got a clean dump?

Odd, I never found any differences when I made a compare.

DRX you're right, the checksum is indeed incorrect. I had AutoFix checksum checked, I was so sure I disabled that the other day :P

So Tweaker your ROM is the same as zecks? That can't be right unless there's a version with an incorrect CheckSum floating on the net or something.

He probably changed it when I said it was the same.

Odd. One of my friends from way back lent me their Sonic 1 cartridge once, and it looked regular except for a white bar on the bottom of the sticker art thing, with fat red letters in it that read "NOT FOR RESALE". And no, I am not kidding. However, I certaintly didn't notice anything odd in it.

EDIT: owait, those were bundled with Genesis. Nevermind :P

I too have a "Not for Resale cartridge, given to me by Super. There's nothing at all different, sans the "NOT FOR RESALE" bar on the cartridges sticker.

'Not For Resale' = Came with Genesis.
    As if no one knew.

So yeah, I really doubt this is anything special, based on what's happened in the topic so far.

*Brandishes his 'not for resale' cart* It's teh no resaaaaala!!!!!

Really. Isn't there a high chance that the one error was caused by a faulty dump or something?

....And, wouldn't a beta have a non-final label on it?

(It's obvious by now, but these questions, I think, are mildly 'helpful')

I thought it was the checksum causing the difference? Maybe I'm missing something?

I have severe doubts that a faulty dump would change all of ONE BIT in a 4Mbit game.
