Thought this was interesting and thread worthy. Yuji Naka in a recent interview with Famitsu:

    Naoto Ohshima added:

    Source: http://nintendoeverything.com/yuji-naka-still-wants-to-see-mario-and-sonic-co-star-in-an-action-game/

I remember back in the GameCube days which Naka references there was a strong rumour of a game entitled "Dreams Come True" presumably named after the band of the same name that was supposed to be the title of a Mario and Sonic action platformer crossover game. Whilst Mario and Sonic have teamed up for the Olympic titles a proper action game starring the two seems a distant dream at the moment. However it's interesting to learn that Naka pitched to them and according to this interview wants to pitch to them again.

Pretty lovely news if something tangible comes of it in the future. Good luck with your new pitch Naka.

Somehow I was under the impression that him wanting a Mario & Sonic game was old news. Though I did not know he pitched it straight to Miyamoto.

And while it's a cool idea, I honestly see Nintendo's original stance to be the right one. Unless the premise of the gameplay is out of this world I don't see the point.

I thought the last time we let Nintendo touch Sonic we got Sonic Lost World. If Sonic's gameplay is going to be like that, then this is a bad idea.

I think it's interesting that Naka is still involved with Sonic given he left ten or so years ago to form Prope. Looks like he still cares about Sonic.

Action crossover? No. Power wise Sonic can do everything Mario can do but better, so I don't see the point. Now an RPG along the lines of the Mario & Luigi series? Absolutely.

I would totally be down for an action crossover game involving Sonic & Eggman and Mario & Bowser trading places through magic shenanigans. Eggman starts stuffing Toads in badniks, Bowser doing something with a Star Rod on the rest of the Sonic crew, Sonic using powerups, Mario picking up elemental shields, etc. Middle school me would shit his pants at the concept. Execution would need to be perfect, however, and Sega would need more of a consistent track record first if they were to even codevelop it.

If Nintendo primarily handled development (so Nintendo EAD) with maybe outside help from Sonic Team this has the potential to be amazing.

Going by this logic, Sonic Generations shouldn't be a thing because modern Sonic can do everything classic Sonic can and more.

Speaking of which, I could see a Mario and Sonic cross-over game work in a Generations-like game. With Sonic going through Mario worlds and Mario going through Sonic worlds.

    Yea I suppose that's true...

Idk I just see a Mario/Sonic platformer crossover ending up like this:

Which Nintendo did not develop at all, and was actually a pretty good game.

The only way a Mario/Sonic platformer would work is if the Sonic part behaved like Sonic 1 or Sonic CD, which is generally unlikely. It's incredibly amazing that we're getting Sonic Mania, and they are the only people I can think of who could actually pull it off properly.

Do remember he could run up walls in Super Mario World. He might be slower, but Mario should be able to take the loops in Sonic's world.

That actually sounds like an awesome idea and an exciting way in which a project like this could proceed and be produced. Here's hoping.

That's why it really needs to be Sonic 1/CD-styled. Mario isn't really "slower" at all; Sonic was originally only slightly faster than Mario. The uncapped speed in Sonic 2 and 3 is insanity that was thought of much later.

You could still go insanely fast in Sonic 1 by rolling, performing the loop jump trick or by using springs and not touching the d-pad. But yeah his default running speed was just quick if that's what you meant.

I had an idea a while back for a Mario and Sonic action game involving the two chained together and the character currently in the lead using the other as a weapon. :v:

I'd honestly love to see a Sonic&Mario RPG game like Dark Sonic suggested, we got hints of it in the DS versions of the Olympic games from what I could tell.

As a kid my friend and I played a make-believe game. It was called Nintendo Sega Melee (we grew up with the GameCube, obviously) and honestly I don't remember what we used to do, but we had a lot of fun doing it. Would I actually want a real Mario/Sonic crossover game now? Hell yeah, if it were done right. I would probably want it to be an RPG, though. If AlphaDream worked on it, like a Mario & Luigi sequel or something, that would be a dream-come-true. Maybe it could be an excuse for them to make a darker game like Superstar Saga. + - I'm getting off-topic now but as a kid that game gave me a very specific nightmare that I still remember to this day. It's totally not scary or anything, but it did wake me up in the middle of the night. However, I now consider Superstar Saga to be the best game in the series, and really one of the best Nintendo games of all time. Definitely in my top five favorite games of all time. Its darker tone just happens to really work for Mario, and it doesn't go too far as to become like a horror game or anything. It's still colorful with fun people and smiling scenery, but Cackletta contrasts so much with the usual Mario style and it's so memorable. Rant over.
When I think about "Sonic/Mario crossover action game" I think of a game with multiple play styles, and we all know how that worked out before. If they ever decide to go further than the Olympics, I'd rather it be an RPG or something.

I think this could be pretty cool if executed correctly. Sega and Nintendo would have to collaborate properly on development adhering to Nintendo's strict quality policy (saying that Sega's new ethos is to delay games to focus on quality so I guess Sega and Nintendo would be on the same wavelength). It could be fantastic and with both characters on the box it'd sell millions like the Olympic games. I hope Naka's new pitch goes well if he's being serious about pitching Nintendo again. So this could be an amazing game.

It's an interesting bit of history for sure. I hope that something comes of this in the future.

I've always been of the belief that Sonic, in almost each of his play styles, and Mario have played too differently to work in a traditional 2D or 3D platformer and I'm not a fan of having the two in completely segregated portions of the game (like most of the 3D Sonic games) or in a genre that doesn't represent their strengths as platformers (RPGs).

I do, however, believe that they could possibly work in one particular type of platformer: A 2D puzzle platformer. Mario, himself, has already been in two straight up puzzle platformers that gave him moveset that made him very acrobatic and allowed the player to complete courses in some creative ways and I've been wanting something similar to happen for Sonic for a while now, instead primarily focusing on momentum.

I think that giving Mario all of the attributes and moves he had in Donkey Kong '94 and the first Mario VS Donkey Kong plus the wall jump and giving Sonic his Sonic 1-3&K attributes and moveset (including the shield powers) plus the wall running ability from Lost World and maybe sans the spin dash could level the playing field while also allowing for level designs that emphasizes their respective capabilities and weaknesses (e.g. Mario can stand on and pick up enemies to throw/Sonic destroys whatever he jumps onto, Mario has to use a hammer to defeat enemies from the side/Sonic can just roll into enemies, Mario can swim unless he's holding something and breathe underwater indefinitely/Sonic has cement in his shoes and will eventually drown without a Bubble Shield, Mario can only slide down quarter pipes/Sonic can run or roll up them with enough speed, Mario can do a backflip or triple handstand to gain height from the ground/Sonic requires a Bubble Shield to bounce higher).

I think the confined, smaller scale levels and emphasis on solving puzzles in various ways would simplify things greatly and encourage more creative level designs. I also think the smaller levels in general would allow for more levels overall.

I don't know what the story of such a game would be (Eggman brainwashes Donkey Kong?) and I doubt most people would be fans of the games focusing on themes inspired by an old arcade game and the Genesis era Sonic games.

I think the real news here is that Naka is still actively involved with Sonic. Since forming Prope many assumed he was done with the character but this along with his presence at Summer of Sonic shows he's still somewhat involved even if remotely. If I'm recalling correctly he's good friends with Oshima and Iizuka too and regularly goes for drinks with them. Perhaps they talk about Sonic and he gives them his ideas? As for this potential cross-over game it could be awesome if executed correctly. I'd love to hear more news on this (like confirmation for example that he is indeed going to pitch them; his comment was almost said in jest so he might not be serious about it).

I'd love to see him get more involved with Sonic down the road. He's the man responsible for the series' genesis after all. Good luck Naka!
