Feedback is welcome, but rather than "Good" or "Bad", I'd prefer what you like or don't. It's of Pyromid Zone (See what I did there? Hit me) in my unnamed Sonic 1 hack (Formerly Sonic One until some chibi/SD thing included "One" in it's title. Oh, cock).

Let me state that this is all the very basic tiles done, and I guess I'm a third of the way "there", aside from one lousy cactus (Not pictured), I have absolutely nothing in the way of scenery as yet, but this is underway. Basically, after seeing Pixel Perfect's desert zone (And yelling "BASTARD" because I had mine underway already) I thought y'all should see a less conservative take on the idea.

Oh yeah, and the music is in. 100% originally composed, and I can't thank nineko enough for helping me achieve this (And, I'll be honest, putting up with some REAL stupid moments from myself).

Its nice. Though the background is a little basic. But as you said, its only a third of the way done..

I pretty much agree with SMTP; it's obvious that it's not complete yet but it looks sleek for something so simplistic in design. The lava really caught my eye. Seems like some of the coolest concepts I'm seeing anymore are from trial members.

Also you mention twice in your post that you had ideas that were already done... please don't ditch anything just because somebody else wants to do it. Just because Pixel Perfect and "some chibi/SD thing" beat you to it doesn't mean you can't do it better. So many good hacks die because they can't find an "original" idea and stop.

The purple blocks in the BG seem out of place. With that sort of pattern, I'd suggest using more similar colors and hues, so they don't contrast with the foreground and make it so you can't tell which plane you're on. It shouldn't take effort to distinguish the foreground from the background.

It looks nice, but the foreground and background might be a bit too similar looking. In still screenshots it's hard to determine what you can and can't jump on. Maybe it's clearer when the game's moving?

Sorry, heh... You could have informed me, I would have gladly changed the title of "Sonic One: Super Deformed"

    --------------

In Topic, It looks nice, for some reason it reminds me of Tetris. Clearly the backgrounds need work, if you use more shades in the foreground It will look loads better. But, nonetheless, I like it so far.

Ditto, I can tell if some tiles are the foreground or background.

Wow. I've been away at an animation festival for a while and, uh, I have comments! Oh yeah, awesome.

Thanks, although the lava is simply a more realistic (Google and look at the way real lava is lit) recolour, and the sleek/simplistic thing comes from my love of Sonic CD's art style*... also, one of the new musics is a recreation (Bugger to the 100% original thing, then ^_^) of that GG Green Hills / Toot Toot Sonic Warrior thing we all love.

I don't. But we all need different-sounding titles at least right? I was thinking now of Sonic MD (See what I did there?*). Thoughts?

In trying so hard to avoid the problem (Which I see a lot with, especially with mere recoloured levels) of it all appearing 'one-colour', I instead run into this. What you see is actually toned down A LOT from an earlier, more detailed backdrop. I'll see what I can do, though it is pretty clear when it's moving (And, to paraphrase Pulp Fiction); I don't wanna think, I wanna know.

That's because I've used tetriminoes in the background. I don't know whether I'll keep that, but I think it's neat.

Compliments like this make me so glad I'm putting so much effort into my hack, thanks! Although seriously, I've asked so many moronic questions (Especially on the older Retro forums) I'd like to think that the work I do proves that I'm worth the effort that comes with telling a newb exactly how to do things because they won't do the research themselves; although my reason isn't down to laziness, more due to the fact that I'm a degree student in animation* (Which is in itself very time-consuming) and I take all the extra assignments I can. So when say, nineko (Again. Man, I love this dude) or somebody answers a goddamn stoopid question of mine, the answer to which is right on this very site, I'm soooo thankful for the help. Of course, I can work things out on my own sometimes, too. I tell you I have falling snow working on one of the levels? Well it's more a snowstorm, but there you have it; an ASM feature I didn't read or see anywhere. And I haven't seen it in any other hack, either.

Anywho, back to it; Layouts for MZ1 and 2 complete (No new Zone name yet), and replaying them as much as I do to ensure certain things 'flow' right is a pain; but worth it. I'm going to draw some new background tiles -- Since I've been so sleek with the design, I now have an absurd amount of tiles to spend on detail. Can I make this look as gorgeous as a Sonic CD level? That's what I'm going to find out. And when the new art's done you can look forward to a YouTube video.

That's it, I'm probably off here for another week; I have assignments and that background art to do.

*; Yeah, I'm seeing about integrating another feature into my hack...

I like the concept, but I don't like the pallate. Methinks it looks a bit too warm (I'm aware of the fire =P).

Not quite. Actually, the name Sonic MD might be ambiguous because it's not a MegaDrive everywhere in the world, and the name Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is taken by some really bad hack* for the GBA.

*; I love this joke. Anyway, I'm told it's bad so I'm avoiding it.

I'm liking the art but not the palette, less pink for the BG please. How come everyone but me manages to get spiffy new art? XD

That's a nice, quirky level you've got going there. The others are right, though, the level needs a lot less pink, especially those mountains- objects are supposed to become less saturated as they recede into the background.

Well, personally I have this secret method where I draw it all myself. And I've said repeatedly that when I finish this hack, I'll be community art monkey using the skills I've learned. Fingers crossed, eh? )

Thanks. This is way better advice than I was actually applying (From an old art tutor), which was to make things lighter as they were farther. Well, I always used to just fade them gradually to black (Not a look I'm aiming for here). Now I'm not using the pinks for foreground, I'll see about reworking this (On top of the sweeping changes already made to the BG).

You didn't do a level that fits with sonic 1/CD. instead of recoloring some tiles, you just placed... a one colored tile. Palette kinda doesn't work well, too Sonic 1 stile had resized siple shapes, and the sonic CD ones were recolored simple shapes, that worked really well.
I suggest you to do a block for the ground, too.
see attachment: red, sonic CD. blue, sonic 1.

I'm of the opinion that both of those are uglier than what I have. Besides, I'm attempting to save tiles wherever I can, in case those plans of grandiose backgrounds ever take hold. Thanks for the example, though; makes understanding things easier (To wit; I'm a dyspraxic. Simply telling me things isn't always enough to have me comprehend).

Wow, ten posts. LOOK WHAT I UPLOADED --> Murky YouTube vid. The description says it all. There's basically a slight reduction in the pinkness since the screens, and the beginnings of a reworked set of dunes in the distance. Anywho, it's a chance for you to check out (In a way) one of my layouts. Nasty section around the 50 second mark, there.

Oh, and the rest of my YouTube account is studenty shit. Feel free to ignore :(

Looks a whole lot better in motion. I especially like the layout, which is unusual- it's not easy to get Marble Zone to flow well. And as far as recording software goes, try Gens Movie Test, it's relatively simple to figure out.
