And it's not even Sonic Genesis.

So, I was browsing the net, out of sheer boredom, when I stumble across Sonic Channel. Interest piqued, I applied a Google Translate job, and looked around the site. Then I found this little monstrosity. And without a doubt, it's the shittiest thing ever.

In about 3 seconds of playing, nearly all the faults are entirely evident. Sonic hits top speed in the blink of an eye. There's no momentum or deceleration. Air Control is impossible. The level layout is changed; no items, shuttle loops, checkpoints. And the punchline? This is on an official Sonic website. Sure, it's just a flash game, but you'd think they'd care enough about their product to at least try to do it right.

That acceleration made it near unplayable. It's not like acceleration is hard to program. At the very least, just lower the maximum speed a bit so it's usable. I think the Sonic Physics Guide should be mandatory reading for anyone programming a Sonic game, even if it's just a crummy Flash game.

It was made in 2004, on the cheap, as a promotion, for one country, in flash.

It's quality seems reasonable for its purpose and time period. Most flash games in 2004 were worse and to expect Sega's top programmers to work on something like this would be silly.

Also if you think this is the worst game to ever have "Sonic" attached to it you can't have played many games. There are hundreds of poorer quality fangames out there and several worse flash games by Sega.

Yeah I played that a long time ago it does suck. Reminds me of some of the old Click games over at SFGHQ.

You're kidding me. That wasn't the worst physics in a Sonic Game, that's only a demo with too high acceleration.

THIS WAS (YEAH IT WAS SOLD):

Sonic Jam had two versions, the most known was for the Saturn, the other was for the Tiger Game.com handheld :P. Yes, that's Emerald Hill with Mushroom Hill BGM. Seriously, Sonic can't climb a slope, the guy has to jump to do it lol.

Sonic doesn't go anywhere when he rolls. And I couldn't figure how to jump. :v:

I never said anything among the lines of they don't care at all, I just find it mildly funny how they can't program a flash game to have the right physics.

Also, why would Sega agree to putting their game on a monochrome handheld? That spells disaster.

That flash game was FUN AS ALL HELL. Just the feeling of HOLY CRAP I'm OUT OF CONTROL WHAT'S GOING ON AAA JANE STOP THIS CRAZY THING was worth it.
But yeah, complaining about the physics on a six-year old one level Flash game isn't really the best use of someone's time.

I actually had the misfortune of owning this thing, along with that game as a kid. Believe me, the physics are even worse if you play it firsthand.

I did. Are any of those games Sonic? Are any of those games bad? Nope. Those handhelds don't have enough power to have a decent Sonic game.

Actually, the acceleration would be okay enough - the issue is that he immediately reverses direction instead of decelerating and then accelerating again. Once you're at top speed, he just flings around like crazy.

    Also, invariable jump height.

And I'm sure everyone who played it noticed the conspicuous lack of slopes, loops, and chutes. Way to remove all of Sonic's trademarks, guys!

More like an UN-promotion. How could anyone possibly want to play a whole game of this after a demo like that? In a world where millions are flushed on Super Bowl commercials, you'd think Sega could take 2 minutes out of their day to add deceleration. Heck, it probably doesn't even take that long.

It's a flash game, not a big deal. Nintendo used to put shallow flash games with stock art and sound effects up on their promotional sites all the time.

I'm actually a tad impressed that the gameplay is somewhat relevant to what they're advertising and not something off-the-wall like a picture matching game or a whack-a-mole variant.

Because it's a flash game and in 2004 there weren't all that many Sonic-branded ones. It was a novelty to have bits of a website playable back then. Just like that craptacular Sonic 2 Special stage flash they used to promote Sonic Heroes.
