I second this. The rings should be more golden. Their shape is perfect, too. A simple palette change can make them look much better, imo. And yes, TyrantWave's #4 seems the best. Also, /r/ animated GIF please, even if you want to provide also the APNG, post an animated GIF too to ensure everyone can see it.
You read my mind. I've been trying to remember where I saw one of the screenshots of the HD version Emerald Hill Zone on here for that purpose, but I can't find one. I checked the archive, but that's just parts of the whole. And I have nothing to do while I'm waiting for this toon ring of mine to finish rendering so I can see how it looks.
More gold you say? APNG: GIF: (Reduced quality though ) I'll upload the sheet shortly if people like this. Edit: The sheet & original:
Alright. I dug this up, it was being used for something else, but it'll work. Original is on the left, my first ring is in the middle, and my new ring is on the right.
Mockup Rings from left to right: 1)Gambit's 2)TyrantWave #4 3)TyrantWave New 4)Upward the old Hand drawn look. My personal preference is for a more contrasted Tyr #4 or either a softer version of Gambit's. Good job guys!
Alright, here's both my rings so far along with the original. Forgot to post this with that huge ring test thing. Metallic Toon Original Oh, and Vincent. Does my new ring count as a softer version or not? If not, I can just go back to the other shader and tweak the colors on that.
Sheet - APNG - GIF #4: Newer: More contrast: Birghter contrast: Edit ^ Making more contrast makes the ring look... odd. Although I might be able to work with it some more on that.
I've updated the image with the older hand drawn frame reference, it's the one upwards. @Gambit: I'd keep the Metallic one with a softer light ambience. The blacks are too contrasted from yellow shades. @Definitely! By contrast I meant to have a more remarked dark yellow colour, while keeping the shiny bright gold shades intact. Work on improving #4, as it's definitely sharper and bright like gold should be.
One major thing I've noticed between these amazing ring renders is that TW's rings are shaped more like a real world ring. Their sides are flatter, almost like a section of a cylinder. Gambit's rings are perfectly round, more akin to a thin donut +D Personally, my preference is to Gambit's shape, as that's how I interpret the original, but what's the official stance of it, Vincent? I image we should set a standard shape before we can properly judge lighting and so on. Or, is the shape of the ring open to the artist as well?
Kept the brighter yellow, and better contrast (I had accidentally made the ring emit a good chunk of light, which deminished the contrast). I can change the colour of the shadows if you wish as well. Here's with a dark gold shadow:
Alright, just posting the first frame from these for now. Original Original with more ambience Toon Also, yeah. What is the final word on the official shape? I've always saw them as being perfectly round, but they don't quite seem to be from looking at the sprite sheet.
Looking on the recent Sonic game's I'm going to say that Gambits ring shape is better. I personally prefer Gambits shape as well. Tyr looks a bit weird when it rotates, but overall it doesnt matter which style is used. The important part is the lightning. Tyrs latest one looks very good imo. Gambit's looks a bit too bright.
Hey Tyrant wave, you have to make an animation with each frame taken from each light spot position! Try that!
For Sonic 2 I've always seen the rings as being purely cylindrical. I'd like to see an animated comparison of TyrantWave's latest and Gambit's newest toon render in an EHZ environment. It's getting tough to choose with the level of quality you guys are cranking out.
It looks odd because you reversed the sequence! It should be: Right Light spot - Upper Right Light Spot - Top Light Spot not: Top Light Spot - Upper Right Light Spot - Right Light spot - Top Light Spot
Whoops, used the wrong sheet. Corrected: Follows the same light as the original. It looks odd because of the jump, but looking at the original S2 sprite, I see the jump there too...

Both of your results starts to look awesome, yet a winner for the "perfect"render & shape may lie in middle. ^^ OR-TYR-GAMBIT @Tyr: *Make the ring bigger, like the original!* @Gambit: *This bright yellow popping out form the shaded part is too noticeable, especially on animation, it may depend on the imperfect shape of the ring?
