In case you've been out of the loop, you'll notice that several wiki images and files are missing now. Here's how you can help. Announcing RetroFix v0.4: retrofix-0.4.zip Latest DAT file: retrofix.dat (updated 2009/08/15 03:21 PM EDT) UPDATE: Beginning with RetroFix v0.4, there are two versions for Windows: retrofix.exe and retrofixW.exe. retrofixW.exe supports Unicode, so if you're using Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, or 7, you'll want to use that vesion. Windows 9x users can still use retrofix.exe. Windows usage instructions: 1. Download the latest RetroFix ZIP and DAT files. 2. Extract retrofixW.exe from the ZIP file. (retrofix.exe for 9x) 3. Copy retrofixW.exe and retrofix.dat to C:\. 4. Run retrofixW.exe. It will scan all subdirectories for matches and print results to a log file, MATCH.log. 5. If you have more partitions, move retrofixW.exe and retrofix.dat to those partition root directories, and run them there. 6. Send me a copy of all files logged by RetroFix in the MATCH.log files.
Running it on the C:\ drive while I sleep, will run again on the E:\ drive while I'm at work tomorrow. Depending on how fast it works, you should have results tomorrow. EDIT: Finished scanning C:\ Results: Search completed. 0 matching files found. Which makes me sad. Scan of E:\ drive: List of files matching the Sonic Retro wiki database: .\Pictures\Green_Hill_Zone_by_Orioto.jpg .\HACKS\xm4smps-4.0.win32.zip .\HACKS\SonED2\s1hack\Sonic_1_(Split_and_Text_by_Hivebrain)_(ASM68K).zip .\HACKS\SonicHack\tools\SonED2\s1hack\Sonic_1_(Split_and_Text_by_Hivebrain)_(ASM68K).zip Search completed. 4 matching files found.
This is all I got so far: http://sonicfreak94.sepwich.com/Retro/sonic06_32.png Yeah, so awesome that I saved it. =P
I thought browsers like Firefox stored their temporary files in different ways than, say, Internet Explorer.
Grrr... I didn't find anything, except Firefox's cache. Just type about:cache in the address bar. This doesn't work for Internet Explorer.
No. This searches throughout a directory for files, nothing else. If Firefox encrypts the cache, or compresses it, then it would miss. But if Firefox stores the cache in a folder normally, just like other files, then it would work. But yes, browsers store data in different locations. Oh and by the way, if you ever used Hacktube, Java has a cache too. I found a hit in mine.
Where do I send my matches to? I have scanned the width and depth of my drive and uncovered a couple matches. Two of which are a repeat match because I seem to have it twice. Whoops. Anyway, where do I send my files? Green_Hill_Zone_by_Orioto.jpg xm4smps-4.0.win32.zip Sonic_1_(Split_and_Text_by_Hivebrain)_(ASM68K).zip Sonic_1_(Split_and_Text_by_Hivebrain)_(ASM68K).zip
You can upload them to a place like Sendspace and PM me a link. I added all the files posted in the topic so far.
I want to emphasize that even though the bulk of what we lost were images, we also lost a ton of zip/rar/7zs of ROM hacks, programs, prototypes, patches, etc.--even if you THINK you may not have any images, you still may want to download retrofix to check. To those who have sent what you have so far: thanks!
Just to put this out there, I searched the entire hard disk last night, and I came up with nothing =/
I've found that while I can look at what's in my Firefox cache, I can't extract the files - there's a little program here that will handle that though, not that I found anything not cached today I'm not likely to have many images, but I do have quite a few hacks, some quite old ones on my other machine. Are you looking for binaries as well and if so are the extracted contents useful? I see some zip files in the DAT file but would for instance extracted ROMs be useful, although they wouldn't match the SHA1? Nothing matching an SHA1 in either machine, but I have these ROM hacks (unsure what builds for most but can get that info if requested): Atomic Sonic (S1 Hack) Malevolent Boss (S1 Hack) Malevolent Excellence (S1 Hack) Malevolent MTZ Boss (S2 Hack) Malevolent OOZ Boss (S2 Hack) Malevolent WFZ Boss (S2 Hack) Mighty The Armadillo (S1 Hack) Robotnik's Revenge v1 (S2 Hack) S1-WTFLame_Final_r2 (S1 Hack) S1-WTFLame_Final_r3 (S1 Hack) S2_water_ripple (S2 Hack) Shadow 2 (S2 Hack) Shadow The Hedgehog (S1 Hack) Sonic 1 32X (S1 Port) Sonic 32 (S1 Port) Sonic 1 & Knuckles (S1 Hack) Sonic 2 & Knuckles Coastal Valley (S2K hack) Sonic 1 - Return to the Origin v2 (S1 Hack) Sonic 2 Coastal Valley (S2 hack) Sonic 2 Delta II (S2 hack) Sonic 2 Delta (S2 hack) Sonic 2 Hellcave (S2 hack) Sonic 2 Millennium Edition (S2 hack) Sonic 2 S3 Edition v1.11 (S2 Hack) Sonic 2 Subterranean Hill (S2 hack) Sonic 2 - The Hybridization Project (S2 Hack) Sonic 2 Ultima (S2 hack) Sonic 2Z (S2 hack) Sonic 3 Beta (S3 hack) sonic_code_gray_slightupdate (S1 Hack) Sonic_One_Easy (S1 Hack) Sonic The Hedgehog Beta (S1 Hack) Sonic The Hedgehog With Warp Effects (S1 Hack) Sonic The Hedgehog ZX - January 24, 2009 Demo (S1 Hack) Supersonic The Hedgehog (S1 Hack)
Uploaded a copy to my personal server, all files are available here: Sorry that it's not much, but download them as needed. I have to go to work now, but I get off in roughly five hours. After then, if anybody needs me to host additional images on my server until they're restored to the wiki, I can arrange for that then. http://www.brugenhagen.com/retro/ Edit 2: I have compiled it on linux and set it loose on my home partition! It is scanning all my files. I was about to run it on / directly, but I highly doubt anything retro related would be in /lib or someplace like that. So instead, I'm running it on my home partition. I also am posting this edit using Konqueror because the web browser I usually use (Epiphany) has easily read cache files that might contain the much coveted retro files. Will report back when it is done running.
I needed some quick reference for the tipical level layout, so I saved them some time ago. Wise choice, after all. Too bad I did it with only the maps for Sonic 1 and 3&K. Download .zip with them all: http://www.sendspace.com/file/k9rarw
For future reference http://www.sendspace.com/file/2nhx31 Contains: Sonic_1_Remastered_v.1.1.zip These are resized from the originals in the archive Knuckleschaotix32x.png makingofs3k1in3.jpg makingofs3k2dg0.jpg makingofs3k3ub4.jpg makingofs3k4cf8.jpg I guess this was lost as well :v:
I actually had a lot more on my F drive than I expected. I'm not really expecting anything on my C drive that wasn't on my F drive, but I'm scanning it anyway. How do I go about getting the file from my browser's cache? I might have some of those pictures from Sonic 1's development, such as the one with the bee Robotnik, Madonna, and Mr. Needlemouse.

Will check D: drive soon, that was what was found on C, if they're needed let me know. EDIT: Although searching for that cache file, couldn't see it =/
You saved the scan of my box of Chaotix? ahahahahaha Though I've already sent an archive of about 500 scans to Gerbil I knew were missing, I'm running this tool on my HDDs now to see what else comes up. I'll let you know what I find.
