The DOOM engine isn't the problem regarding physics, it's how it's setup. It could be tweaked to have better physics. But regardless of some of these problems, I have always been impressed by SRB2. I think people tend to forget where it came from. It's come a long ways, and for getting it where it is I think the team has done a wonderful job. It's too easy to look at where you want it to be rather than what it's taken to get where it is right now. Don't overlook that.

To say that this is an old fan made game I always thought it was pretty good! I certainly wouldnt be able to do anything near that good. Its fun but at the end of the day it lacks loops and gimmicks :specialed:

Yeah, but to be blunt here, hard work or not, it could be seen that SRB2 made a bad design decision early on (then again, back when SRB2 was started, I don't even think Quake 3 was out yet) and now, 13 years down the line or whatever, it's made the game look and feel comically dated.

Yes, they've come a long way, but to what end? So they can release an ugly 3D platformer with 2D sprites? Some of what they're doing looks really awesome, and I really wish I didn't get stupidly lazy doing textures for SSNTails, but it could be so much better in a better engine with better physics. If the thought of "This could be so much better" overrides the enjoyment of the game itself, that's a problem that should be addressed.

And it won't be addressed. The game has been in development longer than some of its fans have been alive on this planet. SSNTails is getting married, and he wants to put SRB2 down once and for all. Not that I blame him - it's great they're putting the hammer down and stopping all of this feature creep - but in the time they spent making this one game, a completed game could have been remade in six different engines.

(This is all, of course, terribly hypocritical, considering my own game has been going strong since late 1999/early 2000 - nor do I want it to seem like I hate SRB2, because I really do like the game, but still).

I'll get back to you on that, but I'm more confident about TFH actually getting somewhere now than I have been in years.

I don't hate SRB2 at all, but it's by far not as good as any official game. It's definitely one of the best fangames out there, even though it gives me motion sickness and/or headaches.

I've played it a few times, didn't enjoy it. It's not that I hate it, it was just annoying trying to control the damn thing. The acceleration was like Sonic Heroes whereas it felt very slippery, and having to get on a spring at the exact angle required to progress was frustrating. Plus, I could never hit a badnik because I would always aim wrong. There's a reason they added the Homing Attack in SA1. The sprites didn't bug me, but it did add to the seemingly (in my opinion) unfair diffuclty.

Long story short: Great idea, mediocre execution. :/

SRB2 is neither great nor bad. It's an OK game, and certainly it has got its unique feel compared to the myriads of fangames available which can't keep anyone's attention for more than mere minutes.
The controls are a bit slippery, but nothing painful when you get used to it.
The default keys are insane, though, and I always remap them to 'Z', 'X', etc.
I used to love this game, and I must admit that I was never that bothered that slopes were missing, or with the camera.
It was (and still is) the only decent fangame which you can run on a non Windows operating system.

I don't like this game as much as I used to, anyway. There are two reasons for that:
    1) I like single player much more than netgames, and there hasn't been a new level ever since I joined the community, which is June 2005.
I mean, they outright don't want to do anything and sleep, because even if they were terrible lazy we would get something for 2008,
    wouldn't you think?
    2) The community has degraded to a level which is so low, that it can be barely considered even a shadow of its former self. The community used
to be fun and tolerant of jokes and pranks on the message board. Back then it had at most around 2-3 admins and 1-2 mods.

to be fun and tolerant of jokes and pranks on the message board. Back then it had at most around 2-3 admins and 1-2 mods.
Then around the time when 1.09.2 was released, a lot of clueless people came to SRB2 by seeing Youtube videos about it, and the community
over-reacted, making rules much more strict, and by putting many more admins and mods. Now it has got around 9 admins and 6 moderators,
which is ridiculous. It seems as if you can't do anything on the MB anymore. In a period, it seemed as every new joiner which appeared
"nice" and "mature" was made admin. It's only over reacting, SSNTails and Mystic as admins and an handful of mods would have worked,
the registration procedure had to be stricter. Not some "grammar captcha" which I can simply copy over.
The community on SRB2 seldom was about the game back in the day, it was more off-topic than anything else.
As a byproduct of the over reaction, you have modern-day #srb2fun. A bunch of closed-minded people on a part, and clueless others on a part.
The latter part will believe every meme and stupidity the former part throws out. Then there's an handful of "free" people which just spam
or talk about stupidities. This other part created the baby SRB2 communities, Sigsev, MKforums and stuff like SRB2 Guild.
While stuff like the SRB2 Guild and Sigsev is "asylum" for banned members, they still believe the stupidities thrown out by the "right" ones
as pure facts. This is not to say that everyone in the SRB2 community is stupid. There are still nice and smart members, that's for sure
but it's much harder to find one.

This is only my personal opinion, it's your choice to agree with me or not. I was in that community for three years and half, before leaving.
The SRB2MB surely has shaped my uses on the internet, and I guess they would be very different to what they are now if it weren't for them.
I thank the SRB2 developers for modifying DOOM and giving us that game, yet I blame them much for being incredibly lazy and unwilling to finish it.
I guess that if the community had more "fresh air" when it came to the game, it wouldn't have degraded to this level.

A.J. has always been a fan of DOOM to my knowledge. We worked on Sonic Doom II together, and we used to discuss it almost daily. The DOOM source code was still new to the public, and so it should be rather easy to see why he picked the DOOM engine. It's also easy to make levels for. It was a much different time. The only reason it seems like a bad decision now is because the game has been under development for years and years. Times change, but look at it from the past. It was a hobby, and he liked editing DOOM. I just don't think it is a fair comparison to try and match it with more advanced engines when the game itself wasn't ever supposed to be THAT detailed or of that commercial quality. It takes the fun out of making a game when you you try to raise the bar too high.

No, but I bet Quake 2 was out already. Then again, we'd then be complaining now because SRB2 isn't based on, for example, Team Fortress 2 or something =P

Oh man Sonic using Team Fortress 2's SOURCE engine would be horrible. Sonic would run around shouting for Monitors to be put up and keep randomly missing with the Spindash because of horrible collision detection, Knuckles would be ridiculously overpowered for no apparent reason and get Meleé Crits up the wazoo, Tails would have to blow himself up to be able to fly, an army of n00bs playing as Blaze would keep setting Rouge on fire, you'd have like 5 Robotniks building impenetrable mobile Sentry farms with LOL DECORATIVE MOUSTACHES with terribly inaccurate hit boxes that block your progress even if you uber through them, and all the levels would just be static collision maps with nothing to interact with except for other animal men and fat guys, like some horrible Fur convention. It'd be a nightmare.

Sonic based on the L4D iteration of SOURCE might be more interesting...

I played SRB2 years ago, and I remember really enjoying the music. But more importantly, I just realized that I was about 10 or 11 when that happened (I am 19). Over half of my life has been spent developing this game. I finished 4th grade, went through puberty, discovered pornography, moved three times, gained voting rights, and graduated high school, all throughout the span of this. That's not really a criticism or anything, it just kind of makes my head hurt when I think about it.

EDIT: Went and downloaded the current build. Honestly, it was pretty fun. The camera is an issue, but the music captured the "Sonic" feeling. Running around in 3D as Sonic while not being forced through a loop with no control was a big selling point for me. I think no scripted segments + 3D gameplay COULD work, but that's just me. Sega seems to think otherwise.

It's all the Source engine, Wetflame. Left4Dead might be a slightly different branch of the Source Engine (and even then, the major differences in that branch are graphics engine related), but things like hitboxes are decided by the developer, not the engine itself.

Valve apparently has a history of bad hitboxes (I remember everybody bitching about Valve's work in CS:S), and Left4Dead was originally a Turtle Rock Studios game (before Valve bought them) - which are some of the guys who did one of the Counter-Strike games for HL1.

    Still, though.

I never liked SRB2 much at all. It felt too stiff and didn't feel like a Sonic game much. And I'm a Tails fangirl, so the fact that Tails was slower than Knuckles really ticked me off. Not to mention the game didn't play quite right. The fact that there's no homing attack for Sonic, or other Character specific moves, it was hard to kill badniks. And the default control sceme expected you to have 3 arms.

Since starposts were singular, it was difficult to hit them at high speed. The signpost wasn't as bad and you didn't have to touch directly it if I recall.

To be fair though, the level designs themselves were pretty looking, but rather repetitive. The 2D sprites looked nice too, but seemed a bit too cartoony. The game seemed to show that pure Classic Sonic does not work well in 3D, and why game mechanics changed so much for SA.

Though the only real reason I hate it so much though is because it killed my old computer in 2004. Though it may have just been a virus of some sort, it still stopped working correctly after starting the game.

So yeah, SRB2 is okay. Not good, not bad.
