I'm just curious as to what your reasons are for playing Sonic, even at your ages. (all ages included, although I've noticed most of you are 16+)

My reasons? Well, ever since the first time I've played Sonic, it's never got boring for me. Each time I play it is a like a whole new experience. The art, the music, the gameplay, all of it! It just appeals to me in a way nothing else has for a long time. The really cool thing about these games is the detail put into it. No matter how many times you've played before, no matter how much you've hacked the shit out of the game, you will ALWAYS find new paths and goodies, and other little details that fit right with the storyline. The "Hidden Palace" and level editation (read Krome's topic) really just shows how much work, detail, and thought was put into the game. The gameplay is simple, yet deep at the same time. It's hard to explain... But maybe that's why I've always loved it. :)

Well, as I've stated before, its a psychological link to the past for me, because most of my best times happend back in the early 90s. Heres the topic where I stated my reasons.

Why do kids love Apple Jacks, huh?
Each time you kinda notice stuff you didn't before. Well, to a point... Plus it doesn't seem to get old.

    Same here.
Also, it's true that you see all kinds of different things every time you play these games. I don't have any sort of mental map of Sandopolis Zone. I have no clear plan to efficiently gather rings or emeralds. I'm also sure that I'm missing some of the big rings in LRZ. I could search for them on SonED, but...meh.

Why do I still play Sonic? Beacause it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than Mario! It's faster, it's cooler, it's not boring, there are tons of more reasons why Sonic is better than Mario! Also, I'm intrigued in prototype Sonic games too.

Because the control system and the gameplay is satisfing.

That's so true! I've finished S3&K more than 200 times I guess, and I ALWAYS find something new each time I restart the game (This may be something I've found and then forgotten, but it appears new for me). In all Sonic games, there is again some little paths that I can see but I'm not able to reach.

I want to say the same thing.

This is these details and work that lack into the new games IMO. Some hacks (including mine) lack these details too. That's what I'm working on. Just look at the mapping here, and try to find a wierd thing:

(Just to see if you can find something for me. As always, you see nothing with my screenshots: should've made an animated gif... :P )

S3&K is unbelievable for the Megadrive: they really put the machine to its limits. They were innovations too: I don't think the lock-on technology will be for our new games, this capacity of "modify" a ROM cartridge to make whole new games.

For my part, I know the games pretty well, and I focus on strategy to gain points (That's not something so easy). I like spending my time to collect all rings, destroying all enemies and monitors to have the maximum score, listening to the music, and maybe discovering new small paths.

EDIT: I dunno why this image won't show here. I'm posting the link instead.

...there ya go. That looks beautiful. I was never so fond of WZ, because the tiles just didn't match up to great. looks like you fixed that :) Truly inspiring work.

As for this topic. Sonic 1 through 3&K all had such wonderful art, music, layouts, objects, control, and character design. All this put together made the games brilliant. Today, it is hard to find a good side scroller with as much effort put into them.

Edit: darn, the picture still isn't working.
Edit 1: picture should work now...

I still play Sonic because the games are so enjoyable, especially on the Mega Drive. There just fun to play.

Leaping through time, putting things right that once went wrong, and hoping each time that the next leap will be the leap home.
Amen, brother. Besides, I was raised by my Genesis. With Sonic, I learned the difference between left and right when I was little, for example.

I really can't explain why I still play the classics, even with all the new games out there. They just have that certain nostalgic appeal, especially to those who grew up with them.

I play them because Sonic 2 is still one of my favourite games ever, because it was so well-designed, especially for its time.

I still play because I remember the days when I was only young playing Sonic 2 with my Dad. We would play for hours on end and never get bored.

So many betas, so little time.
Honest answer: because it's still fun. I missed out on the Sonic games back in the day, as back then I was exclusively a sports gamer. Then, my ex-girlfriend gave me her copy of Sonic 2, and I discovered Gens, and the rest is history. Now I know the pleasure of the old fashioned gaming experience, back when people actually made games for their gameplay and not for their look. I can still pick up Sonic 2 and have fun playing it. Same with Sonic 1, 3, Knuckles, and Knuckles Chaotix. They're just plain good!

For me, it is a link to my childhood, and a game that will never get old, because it focuses on the gameplay, not the newest graphics that will be replaced a few weeks after and outdated.

Well for the simple reason: After all these years it has never got boring. I remember when I came home one day and my day gave me a Gen with Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sure I died a lot, but I always kept on playing it. Then I go to the store one day and they sell Sonic 3 and S&K in some kind of buy-one-get-another-1/2-price thing. Now I am here, 15 years old, and rambling on about my childhood (WOW don't I sound like an old timer!?). Today I'm still here, trying to get all the emeralds in every game Sega throws at me. Well....that's all for now.
