I've been working on a new Sonic 1 hack for about a year now, but I don't want to feel left alone as a Mega Drive hacker in a world of Adventure/Generations hackers. So speak out: Who's still working with hex and ASM out here?

You're not alone in a world of Adventure hackers... you're alone in a world of Generations hackers, with maybe five Adventure hackers, and a couple megadrive hackers.

I may be focusing on Sonic Adventure 2 right now, but I'm not done with Sonic 2 Adventure Edition quite yet.

Oh, right. Forgot about Generations for a sec there. But still, it's good to know that there are still hackers out there working on Mega Drive games.

There's probably a few Megadrive hackers, but they are just working in the background.

I know eventually I will get around to make Sonic 1 Alt 2...when I can be bothered.

There are still a number of Mega Drive Sonic hacks that are being worked on and are recently updated:

    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=30278
    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=29719
    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=30126
    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=28820

Not that they trigger my own personal interest much, but there you have it, there are also the long-term hacks around being worked on:

    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=27765
    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=29891
    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=9124
    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=17999

Then we have the few odd joke hacks that pop in and out from time to time:

    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=29577

And a few proof of concept hacks, which don't appear very often I must admit.

I too occasionally make a few hacks myself, the main point is though, it only seems like no-one is working on Mega Drive hacks due to the amount of Adventure/Generation hacks that have spurred up, and obviously, they gain more attention.

That is very true. I can classify myself as an Adventure hacker, but the bulk of my hacking history has been in the Mega Drive titles. I can't touch Generations yet because I don't have a good enough computer to run the game. But I will get there eventually. I want to make custom levels for Generations, but I've gotta get the game running first. Just like the show says, "I just start with the familiar and slide into the new."

I'm still doing a lot of work with Mega Drive... Been working on Triad, and thinking of slowly branching out into other Mega Drive games. Right now I'm on an iOS kick though... if I can get iOS 6.0.1 jailbroken, I'd try to do more with level hacking Sonic Jump... but as Markey said... the newer games will always get attention like this. But there will still always be a deep rooted love for the Mega Drive.

For what it's worth, I'm still working on my lone project too, although it's not strictly Sonic 1 or 2 of course. And it's still a mere improvement hack, which apparently makes some people want to blow their brains out for some reason. But hey, there you go, it's Mega Drive.

And of course don't forget Sonic Megamix. That team is still working on it. They just said a long time ago that they're not releasing anything new that's playable until they're 100% done.

You'll never be lonelier than the Master System hackers

I dunno, you could be hacking Sonic CD PC, Sonic & Knuckles Collection, Sonic 3D PC, and/or Sonic R PC. You can't get much lonelier than one person.

I'm still hacking Sonic 3 and Knuckles; have been doing so since 2008. It's an on-going project that, although I doubt many people care for, will eventually provide new layouts for most of (if not all) the Sonic 3 and Knuckles levels. And it will be completed... eventually.

See, it's not just Sonic 1 and 2 that get the Mega Drive love. :)

Some people don't have time to work on hacks all the time, in fact some people will provide something at certain points of the year, like the Hacking Contest. You can look at this year's entries here.

That being said, yes there will be a contest next year, something will be posted hopefully in a few weeks time.

I still am working on my Sonic 2 hack... just very rarely. Not enough time between playing video games and going to work to carry on with my own project all the time. But hey, that's life. =P

^ This exactly, there's only a few of us. :'( I hope to change that one day though. xP I love to hack the 16 bit games as well, I honestly probably will never hack any of the 3D games. I love the work the 3D hackers have done, but it's just not my cup of tea. :v:

I would love to join you guys, as the Game Gear Sonics is my dream games to edit. I just can't seem to figure out how.

There's a few utilities around, but I mostly just edit the binary directly. Once you know how to redirect pointers (pro-tip: they're little-endian - ie backwards) and decompress the compressed info, it's not so hard.

To paraphrase a very wise man "To hack ze Z80 you must zink like ze Z80! You must be getting inside ze Z80's head.

I really should start work on LD again, it's been so long since I've done anything.

Well my Sonic 1 hack is still going...if a bit slowly.
