He was tollerable in the advance series. It's just hard to get those tails to look right. But 2-tailed fox in 3D = nope.

Look at Tails' eyes. He looks invalid.

  3. I prefer the Sonic Battle sprites. Sonic Advance 2/3 sprites are good as well. I'm sure that I am in the minority; but I do like the Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Advance 2/3, and Sonic Battle style characters more than the classic characters.

What I do not like are the poor textures used on Sonic models and the limited color used in the sprites. The models look like plastic dolls. The sprite characters' bodies are drawn almost entirely in one color with a few more for shoes, gloves, and the face. The GBA palette was large enough so why didn't they use it efficiently? (don't answer that)

I understand, that's why "OF THESE THREE" was in the poll's question. =P.
I know a lot of people rabidly prefer the old style sprites, but that's not what I was wondering.

So far I've only played Sonic Advance 3, but only seen the Sonic Advance 2 video/trailer on Sonic Mega Collection (Gamecube version), and so I'll have to say Sonic Advance 2/3 style sprites.

Think about this. The style of Sonic at the boxarts of Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle would look extremely good in a 2D game with high resolution graphics and colors. But on a GBA game, Sonic style would look better if it wasn't outlined.

One problem is drawing Sonic's all frames shaded would take years. But I would buy the game if they did it.

I'm not sure about years. Obviously they were able to get out the boxart fairly quickly. I do agree that it would take hella long to draw all the frames. But think of the results... hehe.

The result would indeed be of Genesis Sonic quality.....

The box art may take a week to make, and that is just one frame. you need to animate it.

You know how Sonic X style was created so that the artist and animators could be lazy. One thing they modified was the closed eye color, from Sonic belly color to blue.

And don't forget the smaller body and bigger head. Never knew what was up with that.

also, you have to consider the millons of frames that animators have to draw for Sonic X. Drawing a cartoon is a bit different from drawing game art. :P

Personally, I always thought they should have made Sonic's closed eyes blue anyway. The flesh tone they used never looked right to me.

And as for the whole being lazy thing, did you ever stop to think why Disney characters that have fingers tended only to have four? As Tweaker said, there are probably millions of frames involved with making even a single 30-minute cartoon.

  13. Ah, of course. Lazy animators. LOst's answer to everything.

And, um, did I miss something? Haven't Sonic's eyelids always been blue? When were they tan?

Just in SA2, to the best of my knowledge, but possibly in some of the old-school games (S3D leaps to mind, if any)

....since Sonic the Hedgehog 1. They kept them in both Sonic 2 and 3.

  16. I'm gonna have to break out ye olde Gens and see that for myself, because I could swear they were always blue... guess I'm wrong, though. Huh. You learn something new every day.

(not always something useful, but something nonetheless)

A lot of flesh tone is used in Sonic's face already. Making his closed eyes look blue is one step into changing the whole face blue. I don't like when they change a characters appearance because they are lazy, or because they want to save money.

If I wanted to save money, I would not let Sonic be able to close his eyes at all, just like an old black and white Mickey Mouse.

At the Sonic 1 title screen, there are two frames that are used to show Sonic when he is closing his eyes. Of course they look a little bit gay when you pause them, but part of the whole animation, it looks cool I guess.
In Sonic 2, just before Sonic is laying down waiting for the player to move him, he closes his eyes.
Sonic 3 has some frames where Sonic closes his eyes. Most of them are not even used during the gameplay, but are accessible during debug.

  18. Okay, LOst, I've been proven wrong on the color thing, but really, how is changing the color of his eyelids from one color that's already elsewhere on his body to another "lazy?" How does it save money, for that matter? They changed it either because

    a) They never knew his eyelids were tan because they aren't uber classic-game fanatics like us, or

    b) They simply thought it looked better that way (looking right now, I think it looks pretty much the same either way, but meh).

It is not the animators that save anything. But the people who paint the cell frames. Most of the cell painting is done with computers nowday, so the paint is not really expensive at all. But the work is! It takes longer time to draw the face everytime Sonic is closing his eyes a little if you have to detail paint his closed eyes with another color than the rest of the face.
I call it lazy. Saving time = cutting work = being lazy.

I have seen other factors in the new Sonic games where Sonic Team choose to be lazy. I don't like that ongoing progress.

They also show in the title screen.

In S3D, I don't believe they are shown at all. In Sonic Spinball they are blue. (but these don't coun't anyway)
