To help out with the wiki, I'm going to need to be able to take screenshots of my Xbox 360's output. As the system doesn't have a screenshot tool (unless I hack it), I'm going to need a capture card. I'm looking at two options.

I've read that the Elgato Game Capture HD isn't great at recording 1080p. But since the Xbox 360 is mostly 720p I don't think that'll be a problem. The screenshots turn out great most of the time, but they're reportedly sometimes blurry, which is a concern.

The Elgato HD60 series seems to come highly recommended. But I can't find much about the quality of the screenshots it takes. It's also generally more expensive, but second-hand options I've found don't seem to be that much more expensive.

Of course, I'm a total newbie when it comes to capture cards, so if there's another option, I'm all ears.

Does the 360 have the DHCP handshake? I remember the PS3 did. If it does, you might need a DHCP decoupler for your capture card. Back in the old days if it didn't do the DHCP handshake you'd get a pulsing video that got dim and bright over time.

I've always used happauge hardware for capture, but I've also gone with an elgato HD60 in the past and it was a great device.

You mean HDCP? The Xbox 360 only uses that for DVD and "Xbox video" content.

Elgato HD60 works fine with 360, can't give feedback on the quality of its screenshot tool, but I can check i guess? mine's kinda not working great anymore and only really randomly works, but it works good on 360 and has no issues with 360 output.

I personally tried the Elgato Game Capture HD and it just didn't work. Now I did buy it second hand so that may have had an effect on things. However powering the unit and using it as an HDMI passthrough worked fine, but the software just REFUSED to detect it all. So I'm team HD60.

fwiw, my hd60 has been similar. but i bought it refurbished and it is *incredibly* inconsistent on being detected. im not sure if its a driver thing or not, but it has been the same both on my old dell xps 9560 laptop and my modern desktop.

I have an EVGA XR1 Lite and an El Gato HD60 Pro. Both of my devices were new so I haven't had any issues with them.

I can take screenshots tomorrow and you can make a decision from there if you haven't bought something already.

A really cheap Elgato Game Capture HD popped up recently on an online second-hand website, which I promptly bought. Should be here any day now.
