I am a great Sonic master of knowledge, but this is a question I don't know the answer to. So anyone want to clear it up for me?

I think it either may mean you got the Emerald or it is a faster time. Did you get the signpost without a Chaos Emerald?

First, there's no emerald sign in S2 GG. The possible ones are:
    • Robotnik: Nothing happens
    • Ring: Get 10 rings
    • Sonic: gets an extra life
    • Tails: gets a continue (VERY rarely seen)
As for Sonic Chaos, with the Emerald in the end post you get a continue.

Source: Sonic Mania (spanish website), Sonic games.

It's a red emerald icon on the end sign sometimes, even when you haven't touched the real emerald. I want to know because it is so wierd.

Ambil is right. To my knowledge, it gives you a continue.

Can anyone explain what the connection is between emeralds and continues?

There isn't one, really. They just figured they should use an emerald because of its rarity, relating to the rarity of getting a continue. There is no special significance (and I'll personally eat my own boots if there is).

Oh, and w00t 100'th post. Or something.

Hmm... what else would they use? A Sonic doll would work better.

As far as I know, Emerald signs are only in Sonic Triple Trouble/Sonic & Tails 2.

Saying "What relation is an emerald to a continue" is just like saying "What relation is an exclamation mark to a special stage" like in S1. If they used another Sonic pic, it could have been mistaken for an extra life, so they just used the next best thing.

Nah I think you start the next act with 50 rings, it makes sense as in order to acess the special stage you need 50 rings.

There isn't any Emerald sign in Sonic Chaos (Sonic and Tails).
The Emerald sign in Sonic Triple Trouble (Sonic and Tails 2) give you 50 rings for the next act, in order to access the special stage more easily, you are right Sparks.

Speaking about signs, I played and finished MANY times Sonic 2 GG, and only got the Tails sign once in Gimmick Mountain act 1. I had 1:37 and 71 rings (don't remember the score). I can't think it's totally random. I know that there is some tricks to get almost what you want on the sign, but for this one, I never found anything...
