I really want to get a Sega Dreamcast, despite the fact that there are other, perhaps better, consoles out there. So I just want to ask some questions:

    1. Where can I get a complete console for cheap? (doesn't need to be in box, just have a working console, VMU, power cable, AV cable, and controller)
    2. Is there any way to play online over Wi-Fi? We don't have any way to hook up to a phone line, and a broadband adaptor (which likely wouldn't help much either) is far too expensive. The only game you can play online I would want to is Quake 3, so it's not a big priority.
    3. Any good games for the system? You know, besides Sonic Adventure, Typing of the Dead, Shenmue, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and similar titles. I already own Sonic Adventure 2 and Crazy Taxi on Gamecube, and I hate sports games.
    4. I've heard that Bleemcast is good, and I might want it. How easy is it to use, and where could I get it? For those who don't know, Bleemcast is a PS1 emulator for the Dreamcast.
    5. Is the Dreamcast region locked? If it is, is it easily bypassed?

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
Bleemcast is NOT good. You're better off emulating. It just about as legal as Bleemcast is anyway :ssh:

Besides that, EBay is always a safe bet for consoles. As for games, look here. Dreamcast has no cheap way to use WiFI, sorry.

And the Dreamcast has practically no copy protection of any kind, so you'll have no problem with imports.

Note - easiest way to get around Dreamcast region locking is with a Utopia boot CD, burnt off onto a CD-R - In order to do this, you'll need a DC that is NOT the version 2 revision if you live in the USA (all PAL DCs will work).

I disagree wholeheartedly. I love Bleemcast. Not the beta, mind you, but the individual discs for each game, such as Bleemcast for Metal Gear Solid.

As for good Dreamcast games, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 got a solid port.

Rez is amazing, but difficult to find new

Toy Commander is a great deal of fun

    oh and JET GRIND RADIOOOOO

And Caution: Seaman is good, but you need a mic with it. I bought mine for $25 in like-new condition, game and mic, so it can't be that hard to find. Seaman is a fun game to screw around with (no perverted jokes, plz) and talking to a fish is a cool thing altogether, and he remembers the stuff you say for later. You DO need to play it every few days, or else he'll die

Actually, when I said games for suggestion, you can cut down your ideas by not having games on the Screwattack Top 10 Dreamcast Games. They were Crazy Taxi, Typing of the Dead, Jet Grind Radio, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Sonic Adventure 2, Soul Caliber, Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online, Capcomt Fighting Games, and Skies of Arcadia. And doc eggfan, you are absolutely insane to suggest Ikaruga. It is incredibly rare, expensive, and I could get it cheaper on the Gamecube. And there is a reason why I said "perhaps better". It it all about matter of opinion. Some people will defend the 360 to death, while my personal favorite is the SNES.
And another question actually: How do you burn discs for use on the Dreamcast? I know it is a common thing to do, so does anyone here know?

You can't put a price on love. And the DC version is better

I suppose there are ISOs out there, but I've never pirated a DC game because most of them are gimped in order to cram the 1GB from the GD-rom onto the 700MB of a standard CD. You lose FMV and music

There maybe a way around it now with those SD card plug-in things, but I'm not sure how many full GD-rom images there are available.

    1. online, used game stores, you know the drill. basically no one is going to have expensive ones unless it's the sega sports version, or something like that.

    2. no, just online through ethernet. or do through telephone line into 56k modem that acts as host inside your computer, you also need some sort of device that gives it power (cheaper that broadband adapter, but requires a little know-how).

    3. there are tons of good games especially shoot 'em ups if you enjoy those. capcom vs. snk 2, ikaruga, dead or alive 2, gta 1 & 2, unreal tournament, bomberman live, on and on.

    4. bleemcast sucks but there are other console emulators like sega genesis and super nes. I played earthbound a bunch on my dreamcast.

    5. no, it's not region locked but some games don't play at 60hz or whatever. most games should be fine though, and you can mod it to play those ones. you don't need anything special to burn any and all games, just a regular CD-R.

yeah, you just burn an ISO, sometimes you'll have to convert some weird file into an ISO, but that's about it.
It depends on the game, too; something like Sonic Adventure 2 or a Tony Hawk game which has a lot of videos and stuff on it won't fit, but there are games like Mr.Driller which is something like 8mb in size.

I am not sure where you got this from, but I've never seen a gimped .iso like that. The data is heavily compressed, not cut out. This is why the load times are a shit ton longer on burned discs.

The system is region locked, if you're going to play official games (and really, given the prices of most of them you'd have to be pretty cheap not to). To get around this, you can either chip your machine (not so common now) or get a boot disc. Utopia is free, but DC-X gives more control over 50/60Hz settings and such, which is important if you're a PAL gamer as Utopia tends to boot games in shitty 50Hz-o-vision.

If you're just going to play burned stuff, whatever.

EDIT: Oh yeah. I've got a fuckton of games because I used to run a Dreamcast site, and my top-rated games were Headhunter, Rez, Shenmue 2, Soul Calibur and MSR. Eggfan's list is mostly gold and I'm finding it tough to add to.

Since Olaf suggested the idea: Are there any used game stores in the Worcester MA area? I suppose I could try the local Goodwill or flea markets next time I go to buy games for my collection of retro, bad games. Although I need money first. I'm planning to sell my old iPod touch (1st gen, 16 GB), my sister's iPod Nano (1st gen, 2 GB), and my dad's iPhone (3G, 16 GB). Unfortunately, I only get full money from my old iPod, and a small commission fee (as I like to call it) from the others. It should still be enough. The biggest problem is my parent's permission. They only let me get a Wii because of the exercise it can create (thanks Nintendo, for not keeping on that problem) and because I did well in school. I'm not doing well in school now, and this console doesn't have any other benefits. Maybe it will help that I am paying for it, and that I've proven my responsibility. Maybe.

  13. I went to a flea market with my cousins near there one time.

They had ENTIRE GAME BOOTHS with retro games and systems all over. Maybe you should try there.

I may be getting off topic, but I have to say, man, your parents sound like complete fucking squares. What is their reasoning behind this?

Whats wrong with burning ISOs for the Dreamcast? Ikaruga is small enough that nothing is ripped. Burn and enjoy, doesn't matter how rare it is. If you want to purchase all your games you may as well save up and get an Xbox 360 - Ikaruga is in the Game store.

EDIT: Oh and I wanted to add, Armada could be the greatest game on the Dreamcast, and with 4 players it is mind blowing.

Maybe because he's not as old as most people here? I dunno.

I say anarchy - go against their wishes and get it in secret. If they're assholes about it, screw them, this something you want. They might not want it, but if they've got an ounce of thought for your wishes they'll probably consider letting you keep it.

Thank god I have some nice parents, getting me games and consoles and shit even if its their money.

Actually speaking about money - how much money of this is going to be from your parents? Some or none? If it's your money, they can't do a damned thing about you not getting it. Your money, after all. :colbert:

Do you happen to know where it was? I went to a flea market in CT that had a lot of video games, and I swear I nearly fainted. Got ET for the 2600 there for $5.

None of the Capcom fighting games (even Street Fighter III: Double Impact, which has both New Generation and Second Impact) come close to filling a CD.

And depending on where you look, you can even find an image of Super Street Fighter 2X that's had its menus translated to English. Combine that with a VMU save that unlocks the debug settings, and you can have a fully-translated copy of Super Turbo, complete with english winquotes and 'Western' boss names.

I'm still waiting on a translation of Capcom vs. SNK 2, though. Would love to see the most accurate port (of a NAOMI game? Only logical) get the same treatment (outside of localizing God Rugal, AKA the best boss name ever).

That's far too overprotective. Let them know this. Assuming your info is correct, by the time I was your age, I already had a job and bought a car. (didn't drive it until a year later.)

I was pretty active in the Dreamcast piracy scene back in 'ye day. There were plenty of copies that were the mainstream dumps that had things ripped out. Ikaruga and Mr. Driller had very popular copies going around that had absolutely no music, keeping the file size incredibly low since not many had broadband at the time. Skies of Arcadia had textures and music downsampled in one of the more popular releases, and it looked incredibly poor because of it. PAL games also exhibit on-screen graphical corruption when playing on NTSC, but not all of them. I had a PAL version of Skies that actually did this, alongside a PAL copy of I believe Resident Evil 2. I still have all my burnt games, they're just scattered among CD stacks in my rooms.

    Also, there is a place in Chicopee which is pretty far for you I suppose, but they had an amazing selection of in/out of box titles for pretty much every popular system, including some 3DO/other shit. You actually do have a place in town though;
