Hi I've been exploring the PC port of Virtua Fighter Remix. I've found game credits inside that don't seem to match the ones posted on the SegaRetro site. I found three sets, shown below: It's curious that there are two PC game teams, where one is "PC" and the other "Native PC". Could one be the NVidia NV1 version? How I found these: Internally the game has different screens like "menu", "character select", and "in-game fighting" and they each have a number. There are over 40 of them, which also includes ones that setup or transition into other ones. For example, the title screen goes through three different "screens" to get to display the title graphics. These credits screens were part of a bunch I couldn't identify and just forced the game to display them. That's why you see a corrupted character select screen in the background. Are these credits already known? I don't know if this is old information. Thanks
The Nvidia NV-1 is indeed a completely different version, I have both it and the more common PC version. It's a completely separate binary that can't be launched without the NV-1. It was never sold in stores, it comes with the card itself. I would hazard a guess that "native PC" is the nv-1 version, since it's hardcoded to that card.
I got a copy of Expert Software's Virtua Squad (née Cop) from eBay today and when I ran setup.exe it mistakenly thought I had an NV1 card and installed that version. Maybe because I have a regular nVidia card installed. Looking at the CD's folder structure, there are both NATIVE and NV folders. Each has a version of the game and data inside. So I think it confirms that "native" is the regular, plain-jane, non-NV1 version.
It is, my pal vcop does the same thing. Both versions are on the same cd for that one. I believe that's true for panzer dragoon too. All the others are separate releases bundled with the graphics card.
Dang, my copy of Expert Software Panzer Dragoon doesn't seem to be one of those. No NV folder or any NV1 dlls on the disk. Disk name is PDEU1121.
I think Sega Retro was vaguely aware of different versions, but if one has different credits, it needs to be noted down. Alongside any other differences of course I have a feeling NV1 versions aren't well documented because people generally don't have NV1 cards. It's a similar situation for later games which may do special things depending on which of the 3258904325980425 mid-90s standards are in play - it can be a faff to emulate and many pages have yet to evolve much from "THIS GAME EXISTS". We're claiming there are (at least) 27 different releases of the game - I'd be amazed if they were all byte-for-byte identical.
the NV1 port of Panzer Dragoon only ever came with the card. It, VF remix, and Daytona USA. The NV1 came with a big CD binder that contained all the discs. I have the retail bigbox PC version of Virtua Squad, the one published by Sega themselves, and it has the NV1 binary on the disc.
There are a few other retail nv1 games, too. Battle arena toshinden is another. There is a couple of super hard to find, never sold directly in stores games, too, like mechwarrior and descent: saturn. Both could only be bought through the vendor themselves, and are kind of white whales for nv1 collectors.
